Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

simply did a cut & paste from pointstreak. and i'm not associated with uah in any way, but know several players on both teams so i watched the video from the games this week as i was doing my job at other rinks this past weekend. also talked with others i work with who were at the game and the general feeling was comley felt embarrassed that "lowly" uah could come in and push his team so hard. my statement about uah having to work harder to compete is simple reality, as is that many msu fans feel every team not wearing the msu sweater play dirty...

JP1 - wasn't able to find any video feeds for the UAH @ MSU games on the weekend - any suggestions for accessing archives?

Oh, and BTW, I want to wish the Charges good luck. I hope that they stay viable and we don't lose another program due to not finding a league. One weekend doesn't make or break for me, and I think that it stinks that they are in the situation that they are in. Now, go win a bunch of games, you're capable.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Not quite sure what to say about this weekend. Very disappointing. Even though western appears to be quite improved, we should not be swept by anyone. We must bounce back strong this weekend.

On the radio it appeared that we had a goal stolen from us. Puck was apparently in well before the whistle but it was called off. I wonder if Comley's gonna get another call from the league:rolleyes:

I did not understand why we pulled Palmisano when we did. The faceoff was in western's end with 1:20 left and we pulled him before the faceoff. Western won the faceoff and immediately went down and scored. With that much time left, there is no reason to not wait until we have possession of the puck to pull the goalie. Not exactly sure what coach was thinking there.

Two lackluster weekends in a row after flying pretty high after the first 2. We need 6 wins this weekend.

Comely said after the game that Perlini had two goals disallowed Saturday... can anybody explain why?? Also judging by the penalties was the game really rough saturday as well??

It seemed like we were goaded into playing Western's game. The entire second game was very, very chippy with large chunks of ill-advised retaliation.

Comley tried to stifle the torrent with that odd timeout in the third, but that didn't work. We fell victim to the environment and the opposing team and lost our heads. Krug didn't necessarily help the situation, either.

Also, Palmisano needs to stay in his net.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

The first Perlini no goal was apparently called off after it hit the rafters or something. Not quite sure why it took them long enough to blow the whistle to where a goal was scored beforehand but whatever. The second goal Perlini stuffed it in and the whistle later blew when the ref didn't know it was in the net. They reviewed it but i am not sure how they were actually going to prove anything.

Either way, it is good to see him beginning to put it in the net with some regularity.

Anyways, we'll bounce back.

what did i say last week? msu plays soft, doesn't like to get hit and they lose their cool when they do...two weeks in a row...guess comley will call wmu a dirty team too...

He didn't. But you've overstayed your welcome.

Torey Krug needs to be the leader he is supposed to be and get his temper under control. You don't have to react to absolutely everything that happens. I'm pretty tired of it.

Tory is a very nice player. However, he is young and immature. hmmm Do you think that could have any cause for your concerns? Is there ever any concern when you see him yapping at the refs that the tide might turn against us? Just asking a question there.

WMU played their game very well. I think that in years to come they are going to be very strong. What a difference the coaching change made there, eh? I say "good for them" as a program. Now the Spartans need to move on to this weekend.

I have no concerns with him as a player. He's a very good skater, and it is clear he knows what he is doing offensively. All I do know is that State's power play has not been all that effective, and that opposing teams have scored devastating goals when State has been in the box. Torey Krug - and everyone else - needs to sometimes learn to just walk away instead of getting in people's faces.

Totally agree. Palmy's penalty was a retaliation to a stupid move by their player and he shot the puck at his back. This team needs to get their maturity working as they are capable of being a very, very good program. Letting the other team get under their skin is not a good way to move forward as the word will spread to all of the other teams.

BTW, all three WMU goals on Saturday were even strength. Sparty's PK is actually pretty darned good. (UAH took advantage, but that tood a 5 on 3 to start it off, but point taken the penalties to get there were not good ones.)

The PP needs work, and more work.

Not having seen Saturday's game, I can only circumstantially piece together that a more boisterous crowd, combined with the frustration of two disallowed goals and the dogged physicality of Western's play, had State playing completely out of sync.

What encourages me is that Perlini seems to be a real go-to-guy - a role we needed to fill this season. I think Leveille can be the same. Having been a little frustrated with Grant's lack of scoring - seems to me now he is filling a new role nicely as a setup man - maybe that's the way it needs to be. I believe he had a good weekend despite not lighting the lamp. We need to keep him with Perlini and Gazley for now.

I'm also not ready to panic. A few calls not going our way and a lack of discipline at the end of the game - we could be 5-1.

Back to Perlini - this continues to develop into a nice story. Here's a guy from a 3rd-rate junior league who may now be MSU's best player (definitely the best pure shooter). Others need to follow his example.

This team has the potential to put up a big score.
1. The power play needs to "finish" better - it seems we're just missing that last good pass down low. We're setting up better, now let's just close the deal.
2. Playing with passion is great, but that needs to translate into finishing checks solidly and make that be second-nature. Don't let it boil down to retaliation.
3. Shoot at the goal, and go to the net for second chances. People are going to figure out pretty soon after about our 4th rebound goal off the end-boards what we have to resort to when nothing else is working.

Ohio State is coming into the weekend feeling pretty good about themselves. Now let's use that to our advantage and come away from the weekend feeling good about OURselves again.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Well i just wrote a long and scathing catharsis a bit ago but my browser messed up and i lost it. I don't feel like writing it again. Maybe i will put it out tomorrow but I doubt i will feel as fired up as i do now.

Not happy with this team.

I'll add mine.

How can a team that incidentally does have some talent let 2, 3, 4 goal leads get away from them the last three weekends? This isn't a trend, it's a reliable HABIT.

Can this bunch put together more than half a game on the ice? It's like at some point, a switch gets thrown and we go into our shell.

The wrong people are in charge, folks. It's an absolute joke. State isn't playing together. The attitude looks pathetic, and the minute the opposing team puts a little physical pressure on them, they forget to play the body and just ... plain ... wilt.

I'm so profoundly disappointed. There are too many names to throw under the bus right now. But I'm thinking most accutely about the man at the top.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

So, Palmisano pays for his "mobility" again tonight. What's the definition of insanity?

I mean, the kid's a good goaltender when he stays between the pipes. Why not just stick there?

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

I appreciated his willingness to come out high and play the puck before. But tonight that was disastrous. To me it shows a lack of confidence in net when there's a breakaway.

Palmisano had a real winner last Saturday in Kalamazoo: Palmisano left the crease to play a loose puck in the corner, lost control of the puck to a Western forechecker, then Palmisano promptly gave up a goal off a rebound, off his back, from an extreme angle as he was skating back to the crease.

Mystifying. Totally mystifying.

Palmisano just needs to stay in net, pure and simple. His head drifts into the twilight zone every time he leaves the crease.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

On a related note, it's Nov. 2 and we have heard nothing about renewing our seats for College Hockey at the Joe.
Well, this doesn't exactly inspire confidence: http://www.collegehockeyatthejoe.com/

At least you don't have to be concerned that you're the only one who hasn't received a renewal notice yet.

It took me awhile.

:)

barf

Like I said, it could be worse :)
