Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Time to grow up, kids, and learn how to keep your cool. And for Gazely there should be no excuse. As a friend said to me, he was basically taking a swing at everybody in sight at the end on Saturday. Got rewarded with 4 minutes. UAH had us playing their game by the third period and we got frustrated. I really don't envy their next opponent.

But maybe the change of scenery (at long last) will help the players - sort of clear their minds a bit.

Blah.

We won and that is all that matters, really. I thought UAH looked very motivated last night and played very well as opposed to us just ****ing the game away. I think they have something to prove to any CCHA team they are up against.

I'm sure Chris Luongo put a little asterisk on the calendar next to these games.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Does anybody know which section is the visitor section at WMU? I am looking at buying tickets for Fridays game...and would like to sit with fellow spartans if possible. Thanks for any information

I'm pretty sure it's 22. Higher is better, it's difficult to see through their crappy, wavy glass. I usually get my tickets from the MSU ticket office so I know I'm sitting in friendly territory. That's pretty important at Western, they have a lot of thugs for fans. Saturday is a blackout, be sure to wear your white.

Go Green!

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

State could get a rude awakening not from the thuggery but what's on the ice. WMU's got a deadly freshman duo that could sink us if we don't keep our cool and limit the penalties. This could be a bad weekend.

Do i have to call the ticket office? I cant seem to find it online, but thanks for the info so far

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

MSU ticket office no longer sells tickets for away games, and hasn't for a couple of years. They were losing money on it, so they stopped. In the future, if you want to sit with fellow MSU fans, join the Blue Line Club.

On a related note, it's Nov. 2 and we have heard nothing about renewing our seats for College Hockey at the Joe.

MSU fans usually sit right behind our players or in the sections to the right of that. If you go to Western's athletic page, you can buy tickets online. The only problem is, the MSU tickets are in the "Pick 6 Plan." We ran into this problem last year when we couldn't get tickets through MSU's ticket office. You can always call WMU's ticket office and see if they will sell tickets for 2 nights since you are a State fan. The number is 1-888-4-WMU-TIX. They were very accommodating towards us last year, so good luck!

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Did anyone happen to catch the Coach's Radio show yesterday? His discussion of playing UAH again?

I don't think that the Spartans will under estimate WMU as their record is well known and I know Comley stated his respect for them and their style.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Just wanted to give all you fans of Michigan State Hockey a heads up that there are 2 MSU jerseys up for auction at www.obermanauction.com. (Not to mention some other great college hockey items). The auction is going to help raise funds for the head Men's Hockey Equipment manager at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Chris Garner. The auction is to help offset medical costs (not covered by insurance) incurred from a bone marrow transplant Chris had in August. He is doing well now and hoping to be back at work by mid to late November. The auction ends on Monday, November 8th, so please check it out.....www.obermanauction.com is the auction site again. Thank you.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Comley expressed his displeasure with the "tv timeouts" in the state news today. I agree with him and i think they serve absolutely no purpose other than to slow down the game and disappoint everybody every time that buzzer goes off. I could rant all day on this. Seriously.

I'll poast a link, i guess. Talks aboot going on the road, too.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

In his radio show, Comley was not very appreciative of UAH's style of play and stated that he would rather not play them again and probably wouldn't support another bid to join the CCHA.. words to that effect. He also talked about another call with the league regarding that series. Comley laughed when he said that he's getting tired of these calls. (The first two were regarding the waived off shootout goal and another waived goal that should not have happened.) These comments weren't part of his press conference.

WMU series is going to be tough. All I can expect is that both teams better be ready.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Yeah never good when one's team is outworked, out hustled and is shown what it means to not quit by someone south of the mason-dixon. lol

Pretty sure he is talking about the UAH's "physicality". Check the box score for UAH penalties. Pretty sure it reads something like:

Charging
Charging
Charging
Contact to the Head
Charging
Charging
etc....

I know exactly what Comley is referring to. UAH is a very dirty team and i am glad that this series is behind us.

I am surprised i didn't already bring this up earlier. It became pretty glaring after the 1st period of friday and onward.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

As a former UAH Charger player (and current supporter) having read this forum, I wanted to add my thoughts to the thread. Sorry for standing on the "soapbox" here!

Prior to this past weekends MSU-UAH series, I had listened to audio of Coach Comley comment on the BGSU-UAH series stating that BGSU was lucky if they had 1000 fans at the games vs. UAH. To correct, the attendance for the games was 1750 for friday and 2630 for saturday. As my family and I attended the saturday game (drove down from Ontario, just the other side of Detroit border) I can attest to the saturday attendance as being accurate. Of note, two weeks earlier BGSU hosted Michigan and had attendance of 1500 and 1800. I do not know if there were outside influences on attendance that weekend, but come on, it was the almighty Michigan. For MSU's first 6 home games they have had attendance of 5174 and 5679 for Maine, 5963 and 4198 for UAF, and 4829 and 4886 for UAH. Certainly attendance vs. Maine is higher than UAH, but the average for UAF games is only about 223 higher than for UAH.

Now I read in this forum that Coach Comley did not appreciate UAH's style of play, will likely not look to schedule games with them moving forward and likely won't support any further efforts by UAH to join the CCHA. Coach Rick, you are a highly decorated and seasoned coach...... do you not have the skillsets to work with your team to adjust to different styles of play??? I was not able to attend either game in this series, but did follow on internet and the penalty calls seemed pretty even. Certainly the CCHA officials did not see things the same way as Coach Comley!

Coach Comley, in my opinion you are nothing more that a past his prime, long standing hockey snob!

Perhaps you should focus on getting your team to play to their ability. Or better yet, here's a novel idea, get them to play above their ability like UAH did against you! That way you will win the games you should, win some games you probably shouldn't have, get back the the success that MSU is accustomed to, fill your arena like MSU did before you arrived and compete annually for national championships!

Or, I guess the other approach you could take is to support the attrition in the number of programs and the demise of programs at smaller schools like UAH. Then the strong can survive and there will be fewer teams competing for talent and success. It is a **** good thing that the issues that UAH faces (nationwide economic issues, school athletic program budget constraints and conference affiliation) were not issues for you back when you were at NMU. Otherwise the program might no have lasted long enough for you to be around to have the opportunity to coach one of the "historic elite" programs like MSU!

UAH's struggles have been discussed in detail on other forums and I won't get into them here.

I truly appreciate the opportunity that UAH had to play vs. MSU this past weekend and can only hope that we are able to schedule more games in the future. Obviously, I would love to see UAH accepted into the CCHA as well. I only hope that most of you on this forum and most MSU fans as a whole don't support Coach Comley's views on this issue.

Thanks for letting me rant!

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Well, we needed a change of pace around here anyway.

JP1, you didn't exclude Geoffrion's major for the sake of your argument, did you?

Take your loss and tie and toast the moral victory if you must. If it so thrills you to go 0-1-1 on the weekend that you feel you must boast of your team's superior fortitude and effort, then congratulations on the great outing. But We now have another series to worry about.

And Charger #2, I can see why our coach's comments would upset you. I don't necessarily agree with much of your rant but i would probably be upset as well in your shoes.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

comley needs to quit whining and figure out how to prepare his kids for more of this style of play...

Why, the weekend we have the scrub team scheduled has past.

To UAH fans that don't claim to know everything about 2 games they didn't watch, please ignore the comment above. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Chris Luongo and the accomplishments of your team. I was at the NCAA tourney game, against Notre Dame, that refused to end, rooting for you all. This game was out of hand from the moment the CCHA scheduled Kevin Langseth and John Philo. Those guys couldn't officiate a kindergarten spelling bee. It's pretty common for the frustration of players and coaches with these tools to bleed over onto the ice.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

I knew bringing this up would get a few folks fired up... I just brought up what was said, and basically it was based on the "problem child" who skated around trying to hurt folks. He should have been ejected, and the league agreed in a conversation afterwards. (this according to what was said on the show, I am not making this up) I would guess that will be helpful down the road, don't you think? Now, if you didn't listen to the show, it's hard to say what was said and how.. No whining.. just don't think that if the coach has any say you'll see another set of games again. After this past weekend and the scare with the Denver player, nobody needs someone playing out of control.

However, my hats off to a hard working UAH team and how they fought to the end. If you've listened to Comley over the last few years, you'll note that he doesn't make excuses and he holds his players accountable. UAH should be proud of playing a hard fought contest and especially at the end of Friday's game. WOW.. But to allow one player to play to that level is unfortunate in D1.

Now, about WMU? Expect another tough weekend.
