Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Anyone else having a tough time getting used to this new software? Not so much getting used to it, but liking it?

I like the homepage layout more but I am not sure how the forums have been improved at all. Right now it is just different.

As for this weekend, We got more than i had hoped for and looked better than i thought we would. I think if this team stays relatively healthy, we should be in for a fun ride.

Good to see our penalty kill really stepping up in the second game. I also really liked our response to their 2 quick goals. We dominated the 5 on 5 play until we scored.

Not a fan of the officiating. Waaayyyyy too many penalties. Really took away from the excitement and the pace of the game felt at a crawl at times.

Definitely good to find the net this weekend ... if the power play improves things could look even better.
I like how hard these guys are working - I just hope ALL of our key players are healthy because there's little room for injury.
It was a good weekend for confidence. Now the team needs to get ready for league play and continue to play with the same fierceness - blocking shots, backchecking, active stick - that we had against Maine.

The new page, especially the forums work much better on the iPad.

Hoping for more improvement and at least another win this weekend.

I'm not seeing that on the iPhone... but I haven't tried safari... only Opera.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Would anybody happen to know how often we are going to have to deal with these insufferable tv timeouts? I guess being on tv is a positive thing but I hate sitting through those things.

I think we can take 4 points this weekend. Or 6 points, whatever.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

It is my limited understanding... that per a rule change, there will be the TV timeouts at every game regardless of if they are televised.

This is my understanding as well. If memory serves, three per period? If watching on TV, it's a good thing. If at the game, not a good thing. We should find a couple of players and get their opinions..

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Why would it be a rule that this must happen even when there are no tv timeouts? The slot does not need to be shoveled off 3 times per period. I just can't see any logic behind this.

Oh well, it's just a nuisance.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

The timeouts are the first whistle after the 14, 10 and 6 minute mark. It can't be after an icing, a puck going out of play, a goal or during a power play. It can be before a power play. It's a move to standardize the game so everyone's playing by the same rules.

Players and coaches probably love and hate it, depending on the situation. It makes it easier for teams that don't have the depth to continually roll 4 lines. It's harsh when it kills momentum, unless the other team has it.

Does anybody know why Dean Chelios didnt play friday night vs Maine? Was it just to get some of the other guys some playing time?

Coach stated in his presser that they have several guys trying to get a spot to play. My guess is that the first line is set, and he will be doing some juggling for a bit to find his solid second and third, then rotate through the fourth. Just a guess mind you, but it was hinted at from Comley. The same thing will happen on D, with seven guys (maybe eight, Sturges must at least be trying) working to play each game.

No, though I suspect it has to do with finding the right combination of guys on MSU's energy line. And maybe Reimer's just plain better at this point.

2 of those 4 exceptions make perfect sense. You shouldn't reward a team that iced the puck, or is playing short-handed by buying those legs some extra rest. After a goal - not sure I understand. Also, why shouldn't it be allowed if the attacking team puts it out of play?

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Observations and irritations:

1) Derek Grant needs to not always be looking for someone to pass to. Shoot the biscuit yourself, dude!

2) Torey Krug needs to not always be looking to mix it up. The captain is supposed to set an example for his team, and the only example he seems to be setting at the moment is how to get in the sin bin. You don't have to react to everything!

The other thing - That 5-minute major on Thursday - it was clear on our DVR recording of the game that Krug pushed the Maine player with both hands into the glass. Not only was that unnecessary, someone could have been seriously injured. Not cool.

Fantastic win over Alaska tonight and huge to come out of the Maine/Alaska weeks with no losses.

I am starting to really like Merrifield a lot. He gives it 100% at all times and has been making things happen.

Baaad attendance. Really too bad all of those campout students couldn't have seen this one instead because it was much more fun to watch.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Actually like the new white Spartan home uniforms - but saw a photo on the State News site from this year's Green and White game, and the white helmets and green jerseys do not go together at all :(

http://http://www.statenews.com/index.php/multimedia/40215

Coach explained it during one of the first radio shows - they've changed the sweaters to Nike, but they are still using Bauer equipment, including helmets. Bauer's green matched so poorly with the new MSU green by Nike that white helmets were the only solution for the time being. Bauer has been asked to develop a green for a helmet that is close as possible to the new Spartan green. Hope that helps!
