I am gonna wait until we play an actual game before i make more observations .

A good point - not everyone puts out the same amount of effort in one of these scrimmages. As well you see a little less room to operate because frankly one side knows what the other side's going to do to a great extent.

We should know tons more after Friday!

I hope it's not a bad omen that a club player put one past our varsity freshman goalie - and that accounted for a third of our non-EN scoring.
Or maybe it's just tightened-up netminding after that.

Well, remember, Michigan has played their yellow and blue game, as well as games against Mercyhurst and Western Ontario. I am sure they have much more to talk about as all we have seen is a green and white game.

But Krug is clearly a very special player. I hope he sticks around for as long as possible.

I though Shelgren played very smart for the most part. There were a couple instanaces where i thought he showed a lot of poise. I think he is growing into one of our finer defensemen.

Grant, Gazely and Leveille should be a great first line. Lots of speed with Gazely and Leveille with hopefully some finishing ability with Grant. We are going to need a big year out of Grant because we don't have very many pure scorers.

Perlini, Nill and Chelios all indeed looked great. I think Chelios and possibly Perlini will both be constant fixtures in our shootout lineup.


Grassi got dinged with about 2 minutes left and went down the tunnel immediately. I figured it was a bad omen to already be losing guys before an exhibition game even starts but he came back and participated in the shootout so i am gonna believe he is fine.

Goaltending was great, as expected.

I am gonna wait until we play an actual game before i make more observations .

I look forward to seeing the MSU team this year with one very special and three greats. Should compete for 1st if that is the case.

I agree. And with Mercyhurst off the schedule this year, we won't be in for such a war in our debut, possibly leading to a dissatisfying result.

First, if anyone else got a parking ticket Sunday, you'll have a successful appeal on the website.

Boyd was one of the best players on the ice. That tells me not to put a lot of stock in what I saw.

Forwards:

Grant, Leveille and Gazely, based on Sunday's performance, will not be together long. Leveille turned the puck over at or near his blue line more than a half-dozen times. There's no sense fielding your biggest offensive threat with someone that can't get him the puck.

D. Chelios, Perlini and Nill looked good. D. Chelios was a standout, he's ready to move into a more offensive role.

Those would be my top 2 lines and I'd be trigger happy at center.

Last year, Merrifield, Forfar and Golembiewski had some success but I'd consider switching Golembiewski with Wolfe.

I'm lost when it comes to the 4th line.

Defense:

Krug is obviously special. He seemed to be on the ice for 2 out of every 3 shifts. I'd pair him with Crandell.

Josepher and Grassi seemed to have chemistry last season, I'd keep them together.

J. Chelios played well. I'd pair him with Buttery. I'd pair Sandmeyer with Shelgren and rotate them until everything gets sorted out.

McMahon had some wicked stops. He's going to force Palms to continue to earn his spot.

I don't expect a lot of high scoring games to start. Once everyone gets comfortable, the sky's the limit. Unfortunately, so is the basement. I just can't get a good read on this team. Being the optimist that I am, I've got us finishing first or second in the conference.

MCB, your post reminded me of something - I'm willing to give Zach G. the benefit of the doubt, considering no one was going all out in the scrimmage, but he seemed to us to be a step slow. If that doesn't change, he may become one of those older players who gets eclipsed by a youngster like Greg Wolfe. Again, just my .02.

MCB, with what I could see on the wobbly-web I have to agree with your assessment. (Hey, one more post puts you into the 4-digit club....) Do you think they're going to be a two-line team with a rotating third and fourth line? I think they have some good guys up front, IF they play a team game.

Defense, I'm not too worried and your lines would probably be the way to go.

Was it me, or did Yanakeff look a little shaky? Freshmen jitters maybe? He comes in with a pretty high level of expectation...

This seems appropriate for my 1,000th post. It only took 11 years.

With the NCAA finally admitting that its linesman are not capable of making competent icing calls, it almost seems pointless. It's pretty disappointing, blown icing calls can really screw up the flow of the game.

Hell, the CCHA sends their linesmen down to work as referees in D-III games. You ought to see some of the sideshows I've witnessed at Adrian.

I watched the USHL use this new icing rule for two years, and they had problems with it four years ago. I think it's better than touch icing though as that can get dangerous. It will be interesting to see if they ever get it right, and get it CONSISTENT... I don't care if they get it wrong if they all call it the same so that the players can get in the flow. Icing is one of those things that needs refinement, but I really don't know what the right answer is. I have opinions, of course, but they change dependent upon if it's good or bad from my team.. Can you imagine?

First real look at our team tonight and i am very excited.

Western Ontario knocked off the Lakers and appeared to stay competitive with UM so I am not expecting a blowout or anything but i do expect us to put a few in the net and control the pace of the game pretty well.

Hope to see a decent crowd there.

ugggh.

Well, a lot to say about this one.

First line looked good. Leveille's first one was one hell of a well placed shot. We are gonna need that out of him this year. Gazely is still fast.


Western Ontario played real well, i thought. They certainly looked sharp and we definitely were not much of the game. Not all that surprising considering it was our first game and they are well into their season.

Our predicted lack of finish looks to be a reality. Threw a lot at that goalie and he came up big. Hope it was just a case of running into a hot goalie.

I thought we were unimpressive imposing our will defensively and around the boards. We lost some battles.

Palmisano had a rough night. I don't know if he was screened on that floater for the third goal or what but we can't give those up.

Besides the first line, i thought we struggled to generate consistent pressure. We might have a difficult time rolling 4 lines.

I would try to go into more detail about personnel but i was with some friends and could not watch as intently as i normally would,

Not too concerned but pretty disappointed. We looked fantastic at times and other times were frustrating. Big, tough weekend tomorrow so we better have gotten the rust out.

Am I crazy for thinking Krug could carry an A. That kid is a dynamo and looks like he could be a fiery leader. Too young?

He has matured a ton and looks a lot smarter out there. The C is perfect!

I forgot to mention before that i actually thought our powerplay did a fine job moving the puck around and had several great chances. Hope that can continue.


I think next week will let us know just how good we can be. I am afraid we will still be a step behind due to Maine having 2 more games under their belt but I feel pretty fine about our chances to get a win or two. Just gotta shore up that defense for what appears to be a dangerous Maine attack and Palmisano's gotta be the better goalie.
