College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Methinks they are waiting for Notre Dame to capitulate. Honestly. The Big Ten is in a great position as they are going to be #1 or #2 on the list of every team in the nation that could potentially move. They don't have to force anything. I bet they don't take another member until Notre Dame reads the writing on the wall and sees it's dying a slow and painful death.

BC should be punched repeatedly for causing the first conference exodus.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

I'm assuming you've purposely misspelled "Miami" since that was the team the ACC was looking for in the first place.

No typo. Miami and Va Tech are teams that fit the ACC. BC just f'ed over Cuse, Pitt, W. Va because they were greedy. Hope BC enjoys never making it the BCS again when they could be in the mix if they stayed.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

They (Missouri) might still be yet, if the B1G can rope in another team from east to keep Penn State and OSU from screaming holy hell.
I have no problem with brainstorming, as long as it's acknowledged as such. But I must say that I see absolutely no evidence of this sentiment in Columbus. For an analogy, let's look at the addition of Nebraska. Local support appears to be virtually unanimous. There's lots of talk about what a great cultural fit both the school and the football program are with the league. Weeping and gnashing of teeth because Lincoln isn't in the Eastern Time Zone? Maybe I'm missing something, but I just haven't seen it.

I would agree that Missouri needs an "attractive" partner to get the conference to expand beyond 12 teams. For example, If Notre Dame suddenly becomes available, then sure, we're back in the market. I'm not holding my breath; I let go of the ND possibility some time ago. But if it does transpire, then Mizzou has a real shot. A ND/Mizzou combo would undoubtedly be well received. If nothing else, South Bend is plenty "East enough" for Buckeye purposes. ;)

Finally, let's push it one step further. Suppose the Big 10 were offered a Mizzou/Kansas package. Is OSU interested? Maybe yes, Maybe no. Putting Mizzou in the Hayes Division and and Kansas in the Schembechler would work well enough. Still, I'd imagine that there'd be considerable sentiment to stay at 12 teams rather than jump at that deal. But would there be outrage because an Eastern school wasn't part of the equation? Again, I just don't see it.

Except for the minor detail that the ACC was always going to take 3 teams, meaning someone would be howling "traitor!" at the third even if you accept Miami and Virginia Tech leaving. And frankly, in 2005 when Miami's 2000-2002 run was much more recently in everyone's mind, why the hell would anyone want to stay in the Big East?

The league replaced a team that had gone to 4 BCS games in the 2000's and played for the title twice with Louisville. You're delusional if you think Syracuse wouldn't have accepted Boston College's bid.

I know Syracuse never would have accepted the bid. If BC kept with the conference, Miami and Va Tech would've backed out because there would be no championship game with 11 teams.

Yep, you're delusional. Did you forget the year where the ACC had 11 teams? If it wasn't BC, it would have been someone because

Syracuse
UConn
West Virginia
BC
Rutgers
Pitt
Temple

is a ****ty, ****ty excuse for a football league. Almost all of those teams would have bailed.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Yes, because Nebraska was the biggest prize on the map that wasn't as shady as a $3 bill. If they were going into New York (which they may very well do yet), don't count Syracuse out quite yet, either.
UConn probably has a bigger following in NYC than Syracuse at this point. May as well invite Rutgers, St. John's, or LIU-Brooklyn before Syracuse.

'Cuse owns upstate, though, if they're dying to get some of that hot Albany-Binghamton action.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

What's with the Syracuse hate on this board? Are you guys still mad they blew your brackets up in 03? :D

BTW, BC wasn't even the first choice for Dave Gavett and the Big East back in the day. They'd be Holy Cross if Holy Cross had accepted the Big East's invite back in the day. A little gratitude would be nice.

The NCAA is apparently back in Miami investigating a Shapiro fellow who ran a $930 million ponzi scheme and now that he's in prison for twenty years is singing like a canary about giving cash to "household" names on the Hurricanes over the last ten years.

And yet somehow, some way, THE U will get off with less that U$C....

Everyone wave goodbye to the Miami football program!

Edit: Paul Dee, Chair of NCAA infractions committee on USC: "high-profile athletes demand high-profile compliance"

Dee's other job at that time: Athletic Director at Miami.

In 100 hours of jailhouse interviews during Yahoo! Sports’ 11-month investigation, Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro described a sustained, eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking, some of it with the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs. At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.
