College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Calling it now, in 2-3 years Tressel will be wearing a blue sweater vest. :D

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

At what point does the NCAA step in and hand out a punishment that would make USC fans giggle?
Well, let's see - according to the agents, they gave the Bush family over $300k in gifts during his time at USC (which they're suing to get back). That's a heck of a lot of tattoos...

The NCAA came down like a ton of bricks on USC, even though they were pretty forthcoming that there was a problem - and that problem was surrounding one student.
Ohio State said they had no problem. Then they lied and tried to cover it up. Then they lied again and tried to cover it up. Forget about the NCAA, Tressel didn't even tell his own compliance office about the issues (That alone is an NCAA violation). It sounds like the car deals were the worst kept secret on campus, yet no one in the athletic department noticed anything.

No one learns from Watergate. It's not necessarily the crime, it's the cover up.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

SI's George Dohrmann was on the Dan Patrick Show and was asked if he was done investigating Ohio State: "There's a lot more stuff there." Dohrmann said.

DP says Ohio State fans better hope for the treatment USC got from the NCAA because their's could be a whole lot worse. I'll still be shocked if OSU gets more than a slap on the wrist.

That was one player and one assistant coach (and a ton of cash) and they have cut ties about as good as can be expected. This is multiple players dating back many years, all the coaches knew, in some cases the compliance department knew and was involved, then there was a cover up, a cover up of the cover up and that is just what we know about.

USC is similar to the Cam Newton situation...OSU is basically what everyone assumes the SEC is...corrupt to its core.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

If this had happened to the Ohio State cross country team, we'd be enjoying a quiet night.

I didn't realize cross country teams had people throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars at them to entice the athletes to come to that school.

People only care about football and basketball because that's where the money is, because people care about it.

That said, if tOSU doesn't get the death penalty (and I doubt they will), then the NCAA is telling the world the death penalty is off the table.

Maybe Ohio State can make a quick application to switch to the SEC and then they'll get the usual slap on the wrist SEC teams get, no matter what they've done.

They should give the death penalty to the entire big 10. They can all burn, as far as I care.

The Death Penalty is off the table...ESPECIALLY to a school like OSU. If it was Miami (OH) instead...then maybe.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

The author of the story is taking questions via Twitter @georgedohrmann #sichat

A few of his answers so far:

I chose OSU because there was already evidence of wrongdoing and I felt whole story wasn't being told
We put the sourcing in the story. The drug allegation came from someone who forked for Fine Line's owner for 20 months
In terms of what sanctions may come, the USC is best comparison because it represents latest COI stance
^ This was in response to my question on if this case resembles USC or if there is another school that is a better comparison.^

I would say the YSU folks were "somewhat" forthcoming and leave it at that.
NCAA system is weird in that it somewhat counts on school to investigate self. Very flawed, of course.

Edit:
Buckeye nation is very good at blaming the messenger and they knows lots of curse words

The death penalty is off the table because Ohio State is not currently on probation. You have to be nailed for new violations while still on probation for previous ones. Sure, if they wanted to work at it, they could probably spin backwards enough to find violations that occurred while OSU basketball was on probation, but they're not going to.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Hypothetically speaking....

Lets say that one of the major results/penalties is that tOSU has to vacate wins/games/seasons.

Now, we all know that they may give some bowl game money back, maybe. But probably not TV money from the regular season. And no way I see them willingly give ticket money back.

But could there be a nice class action lawsuit from the season ticket holders (all of whom have to donate considerable money, too)? I know most OSU fans won't consider that, but hypothetically?

You shelled out who knows how much money, and just found out that none of it counted, due to ineligible players. Enough people do this, and this will really hurt tOSU.

Hypothetically, of course. I'm sure there's not a high paid lawer who is also a season ticket holder who would gain millions in costs.... ;)

The last 2 times the death penalty has been applied, it was against programs with no prior violations.

They blew past the usual OSU/USC/Alabama/Auburn level of violations and went full crazy. The DII soccer program signed guys they knew had played soccer professionally, and the DIII tennis team was offering scholarships.

It'd be the equivalent of Lucia saying "fark it" and signing a handful of Russians 19-20 year olds that played in the KHL last year and Maturi going along with it because "odds are, they don't have the paperwork to prove that we're destroying the rules, much less breaking them."

As I understand it, a new major violation while on probation automatically invokes the death penalty (unless it is specifically overridden). Initial violations can also warrant the death penalty if they are egregious enough.
