Re: College Football III: We may lose, but we keep the score close!

This isn't news, but it warmed my heart to see a stat during the Michigan game last weekend that their longest losing streak to any one team was 9 games, vs Minnesota. :)

Sure it was in the 30's and 40s. But that doesn't take away from the greatness of that stat.

Hey, we used to beat Michigan and Ohio State. There was a time when the Ivies dominated college sports. Before, you know, admissions standards. :)

Yeah, they only put what? 42 up on Minnesota. Although, I'd much rather see a Wisconsin-Stanford Rosebowl.

Better dead than Red...and you want double red!

Re: College Football III: We may lose, but we keep the score close!

Devil's advocate: I'm sure UMass believes they are actually better than much of the MAC teams and could be competitive enough to be bowl-eligible right away. Plus a non-conference game with Boston College, an FCS game with a CAA team like UNH or Delaware, and maybe a big-boy paycheck game with a power conference team may make it worth their while. Plus television exposure on ESPN (granted on Tuesday or Wednesday nights) and they think it's worth a shot.

That would be my guess about it as well. They put in the investment of say a 25,000 stadium thats cozy, but with plenty of room for expansion up to say 40,000 while keeping that cozy feeling, along with say a yearly game or so at Foxboro for the Boston Area Alumni, recuit like hell to find a lot of scrappy guys that can go up and beat what the rest of the MAC can offer, start winning the MAC Championship game and be able to hang around between 15 to 25 on most polls, at the right time when a Big East Spilt or some other landscape change happens, they could find themselves being a good value for another conference to go after.

This sounds like the 10-15 year plan. If the big east split happens, wouldn't it be likely to happen before that? I don't think they have time to build the program up to respectability in the MAC, they're too late to the party.

If they at least have the Stadium up by then, they would still have plenty of potential to sell themselves on. Namely, just going thru the transition from D1-AA to D1-A would make em fairly attractive to take a flyer on. At worst, they could always help fill out a conference with a bottom feeder that at least has a nice stadium, and shouldn't be that big of a hassle for other teams to get to.

Re: College Football III: We may lose, but we keep the score close!

So I guess there was a period of time on Monday when Cam Newton was ineligible to play. Now though, the NCAA says everything is A-OK!
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5870788

Well, not quite, but he's eligible again.
That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. So his amateur status has been violated, but somehow he still is ok to play? And Auburn declares him ineligible on Tuesday and then he's restored within a day? Sounds like a lot of shenanigans going on behind the scenes.

Re: College Football III: We may lose, but we keep the score close!

So, parents can shop their children to universities with impugnity as long as the player doesn't know (as if anyone thinks Cam Newton didn't know)? This isn't over, clearly, but if the NCAA really goes this route, it will change college athletics forever.

Re: College Football III: We may lose, but we keep the score close!

According to facts of the case agreed upon by Auburn University and the NCAA enforcement staff, the student-athlete’s father and an owner of a scouting service worked together to actively market the student-athlete as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton’s commitment to attend college and play football. NCAA rules (Bylaw 12.3.3) do not allow individuals or entities to represent a prospective student-athlete for compensation to a school for an athletic scholarship.

So, basically, he's guilty, but since he's in the SEC Championship game and likely to win the Heisman, he gets no penalty.

This, of course, quadruples the ****storm that will ensue if more damming facts come out later.

USC ought to be burning stuff to the ground for this.

Re: College Football III: We may lose, but we keep the score close!

If you read the NCAA's release, they make it pretty clear that this is not over--

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect...mber/ncaa+addresses+eligibility+of+cam+newton

"Reinstatement decisions are independent of the NCAA enforcement process and typically are made once the facts of the student-athlete’s involvement are determined. The reinstatement process is likely to conclude prior to the close of an investigation. It is NCAA policy not to comment on current, pending or potential investigations." In other words, Auburn is being investigated, but they don't have anything yet against Newton as an individual, so they have to let him play.

The NCAA takes its time with these things, unfortunately.

Was there a prior standard that said the player was ineligible even if he didn't know? In other words, is this a reversal of or just a clarification of prior policy?

I doubt anybody other than real hard-boiled Auburn fans believe Newton is innocent in this, but I'd still rather the burden of proof fall on the NC$$. It does mean we are all set up to have another vacated Heisman.

TBA probably already has the lighter fluid.

Is anyone honestly surprised the NCAA didn't bring the hammer down on an SEC school? Really?

By this logic, Reggie Bush could have said he had no idea what his parents were up to and he and USC would be fine.

The NC$$ doesn't usually embrace the Sgt. Schultz defense.

Re: College Football III: We may lose, but we keep the score close!

Dez Bryant loses a season for talking to Deion Sanders and lying about it to the NCAA.

Newton gets nothing for his father attempting to extort six figure money.

AJ Green misses multiple games for selling a jersey on EBay.

USC is a special case.

NC$$: We are going to sanction you.

U$C: But we didn't know!

NC$$: Possibly, but you hired Lane Kiffin, so you're obviously guilty of something. Take him away.

Anyway, I don't think anybody is saying Auburn is okay because Newton didn't know. Auburn is okay because so far the only proof is that Rev. Newton whored his son out to Mississippi State.

Bruce Pearl, Tennessee's basketball coach that got himself suspended for half the SEC season for recruiting snafus was at some Tennessee dinner thing and said

"I've made mistakes -- I clearly did," Pearl said, according to KnoxNews.com. "But what I was hoping for was that some other dumbass would get on the front page and take me off the hook. I miss Lane Kiffin.''
