College Football 2022: “Here’s a twenty, bury two.”

That was fast. Deboer to Bama from UW. Passing up a raise from UW and a possible hometown jump to the NFL.

I guess I should not be that surprised- he was also rumored for the Michigan spot if Jim went pro. But I am surprised. UW has some issues, apparently.

What should be a pretty low pressure area to have a high end college FB program in a now prosperous conference went to probably the highest expectation school in the country. So high they pretty much get their own ESPN character to talk "SEC" football. I get that Michigan has a side eye for the pressure in Columbus- but it sure seems a lot more in Alabama.

Get in while the gettin's good I suppose. Washington reportedly offered to double his salary, so he's going to make a couple more million a year at Bama since it's rumored he will be getting 10+ a year. Whether that's worth the pressure, not sure, but money's money.

Saban also said he'll be keeping an office in the stadium and plans to still be around. Whether that's good or bad for the program to move forward is up for debate, but for Deboer's sake that's the ability to be mentored in person on a regular basis by the best to ever do it.

He’d better get us guaranteed. The leash will be very short for the first replacement, so losing the job in 3 seasons is quite possible. We know that quite well here in Ann Arbor.

It would be funny to try to get more money at bama and end up with less.

I've heard from recruiting folks (Wolken@ USA Today, etc) that the Alabama NIL setup was really nothing more than Saban as a draw and they'll have to build that up properly eventually

The Ivy League All-Stars lost to the Japanese All-Stars yesterday 10-5 in the Dream Japan Bowl.

I can’t actually find a roster but others said the Japan team was made up of college players and played from their X League, which included American imports with FBS experience, so not quite sure where this falls on the list of upsets, if it is at all. The Ivy only won 24-20 last year.

ESPN is the CFP broadcaster until 2032.

Good thing for them that there are now 11 games where the players will care instead of the previous 3.

yay.

I actually think the CFP is the best run sports program in history. What they have done with the multichannel format is revolutionary and I think should be rewarded, which is what happened.

I wish the rest of these channels would do it for the Super Bowl and other events like the World Series. It's fresh and engaging to a wider audience.

The whole point of that is more eyeballs. Which apparently works. I'm not really a big fan that so many games were on ESPN- which seemed to have gutted the significance of the games so much that the number of players bailing on the game has really gone up.

Disney can do it because they have SO many channels to cross cover. NBC has a lot of channels, too, but are more "random" than ESPN/2/N/SP/U....

I don't think being on ABC or ESPN is of any material difference to the players. There are going to be players who have never watched an hour of OTA broadcast.

OTA games were significant. Before any playoffs or whatnot- players actually wanted to play the bowl games- Rose, Orange, Sugar, Cotton, etc. Now they only play the playoff games, and the way ESPN broadcasts them, they care as much as the players do. So basic coverage for the non playoff games, and massive coverage for the playoffs.

To me, it's more about the monopoly of most of the games more than anything. Made worse that the monopoly is cable tv.

Not to say I'm not a sucker and watch many of them.

Uhhh. Almost all of that is because the players have bags of money dangled in front of them and are getting wise counsel that they shouldn't jeopardize it for a Preparation H Butthole Bowl ring.

has literally zero to do with it not being OTA.
