College Football 2022: “Here’s a twenty, bury two.”

All that over thanks to the need from the public for a game to decide the championship.

It wasn't the public, it was the networks and other media that pushed it.

I can remember watching bowl games on New Years Day and nobody saying a word about a national championship That was just something a bunch of loser sportswriters did later to make themselves feel important.

A dozen or more teams ended the season on the ultimate high. It was so much better.

If you are going to put it like that, it was the Mouse's fault. The whole structure is driven by the Disney Corp- almost all bowls are on ESPN.

Agreed

Did they just get lucky and rake it in, though, or did they actively push all the crap that has happened in the last 30 years?

I don't think they killed college football. They're just picking at the carcass.

I agree with Mich. it was the mouse. They pushed this shot like none other.

I just assumed it was Bristol since everything they touch turns to sh-t.

Seems that ESPN really turned to huge profits once the Mouse bought them. That happened in 1996, and the BCS started to ruin things in 1998.

(which is about the same time ESPN dropped F1 (dropped in 1997) and Indycar (2002)- and pivoted to the NBA)

Dang, Clemson- can move the ball do the 30 and do nothing after that. More yards, more plays, more time over TN, and I don't see them getting a TD. 15 points to tie in the last quarter looks quite unlikely.

College football is dead if you're taking Geritol with your dinner at 4:30.

I 100% preferred the way it was but it's still the superior game to the NFL. Watching (for example) a Gophers game in person is an infinitely more enjoyable experience to watching a Vikings game at US Bank.

Sortofa sports 'perfect storm' today,
Alabama/Kansas State at noon
Brighton/Arsenal at 12:30
Kansas opens Big12 play at home against OKeydoke State at 2

FS23 must not be happy with the offensive line. Pretty poor play when they needed to get some blocking.

Yeah, there were a few plays where Clemson got really mixed up on their protections that led to some pretty easy sacks. Of course, there were also a few sacks that were solely due to Klubnik getting flustered and not stepping up in the pocket.

A bit frustrating to lose a game (and it wasn't terribly close) where they had 9 possessions inside Tennessee's 30 yard-line, and walked away with only 3 scores (and 14 points). Oh well. Klubnik will be interesting to watch. He is definitely behind where Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson were after their Freshman campaigns, but he also got significantly less playing time than either of those two. Klubnik showed flashes of being a high-end, Heisman caliber QB in his limited time. He also showed some flashes of really poor decision making. Here's to hoping that more experience will lead to more consistently strong play. If so, Clemson could be back in the Playoff mix next year.

On to the meaningful games. I don't think TCU has much of a chance, but hopefully they prove everyone wrong and win a couple of games here in the next 10-12 days or so.
