College Football 2021: Cash is King

What else did Joe Paterno think, about Todd Hodne, about sexual misconduct? We reached out to his children to find out. His daughter Mary initially said she needed some time to think and then didn't respond when we followed up. His son Jay asked about what documents we had but did not agree to an on-the-record conversation for this story. His daughter Diana said she didn't recall a player named Hodne and cut the call short saying, "This sounds to me like another chance to blame my dad for something he had nothing to do with."

Jesus H. Christ, just burn the entire fucking family. All shirking from or sticking up for their disgusting dad's now worthless "legacy".

Honestly, how did Penn State football not get the fucking death penalty (I know, I know...$$$$$$$$)? This just pisses me off all over again.

Meh. I never willingly talk to reporters either, and the worst thing on my record is a speeding ticket. I don't blame the first two for not talking. The third one should've taken the same tact of a simple "no comment," but then who knows how much the reporter bugged her until she gave that line.

Big Ten aiming for $1 billion in media rights deal.

Big Ten could end up on up to seven different platforms.

Currently on Fox and ESPN for football, along with CBS for basketball.

CBS is interested in picking up football since the SEC will be leaving to be ESPN exclusive next year. NBC, Turner, Apple, and Amazon have been in negotiations as well.

Won't be all that happy if games end up behind a streaming paywall on Apple or Amazon, but I could see the Friday night games they've started scheduling the last few years get shipped to those platforms. TNT is apparently looking to get a primetime football game and add some college basketball to their NBA coverage.

The key takeaway for me isn't so much the value on the top end of the games (Think O$U/Wisconsin with a berth in the title game/National Championship implications) but the value seen on the bottom (Illinois/Rutgers on Oct. 28th with 6 combined wins). The latter is what is really being bid on, especially by streaming services.

Agree on the streaming portion, but I wouldn't discount the top games not bringing in some cash through bidding wars, either.

Big Noon on Fox has turned out to be a ratings hit. Fox has a controlling interest in BTN, so I don't see the Big Ten shutting out their TV owner from getting first pick, nor do I think the Big Ten would want to turn away from that time slot. But I think CBS is currently left with only the Mountain West and the academies for football. Now I do enjoy watching some of the MW teams, but with the SEC leaving, my guess would be CBS would rather have a Big Ten game at 3:30 than try to fill it with Boise-Air Force. Last year there were some articles hinting that NBC would like to expand coverage so they could have a game on Notre Dame away weeks and have double headers when they do have an ND game on the schedule. And then if TNT wants a prime time game, you’d have to think they’d be bidding for a top bill game and not Northwestern-Maryland or whatever is getting thrown into the BTN night slot. All those networks have an interest in getting first pick on a rotating basis, or at least the second pick.

The above is not even including ESPN/ABC, which is complicated in its own right. The Big Ten is leading the charge on delaying expansion of the playoff until the ESPN exclusivity window ends, so there is some strife there, but at the same time given their standing, you likely need a contract of some type with them, at least until the playoff expands.

The article mentions going exclusively to Fox, but I can't see that happening. You'd be left with Fox, FS1, FS2, and BTN, and I don't think that FS2 is widely available in markets.

And if CBS gets in on it, maybe we could get some more hockey on tv and CBSSN could have Big Ten/NCHC doubleheaders.

The NCAA Division I Council announced Wednesday that it will relax restrictions on college football's conference championship games, allowing conferences to determine the teams that would participate in their respective title game. The decision paves the way for conferences to avoid having title-game matchups determined by division winners as well as possibly eliminating divisions altogether.

It didn't take long for a Power 5 conference to change things up. Minutes after the NCAA announcement, the Pac-12 announced that starting in 2022, the conference's title game would feature the teams with the two highest winning percentages.

I'm going to guess most conferences will now move to a pod or protected rival system. One, that allows for the top two teams to rematch, but it'll also allow conferences to rotate through schedules quicker. Right now the SEC and ACC only play-non divisional teams every seven years or something extreme like that. Big Ten sends every team to each stadium every four years, but that's because they go to nine conference games.

If the Big Ten goes to three protected rivals plus five rotating games they can still keep every team visiting each stadium every four years. The only problem with that is going to be coming up with the protected games. It's nearly impossible to not end up with some weird permanent "rivalries" like Northwestern-Maryland or Rutgers-Indiana.

As long as UM keeps IA and UW I'm good.

The ACC was talking about the 3-5-5 earlier this month and you can pretty much guarantee that's gonna happen.

Some of the mock-ups I’ve seen (and my own attempt), Minnesota is one of the pivotal schools in this, depending on if you give them Nebraska or Michigan for their third game. PSU is the other, since they could get MSU or OSU for their third, assuming they get stuck with Rutgers and Maryland for the other two. Still, I haven’t seen a solution that doesn’t end up with a random Maryland-IU or Rutgers-Illinois type match-up.

This is one option that I came up with, giving Minnesota the Little Brown Jug over the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy. The third team for RU and MD is pretty arbitrary. I would rather see MSU-Northwestern as match-up, but I would see the Big Ten putting Maryland and Rutgers with a couple Big Ten East foes versus putting them in Purdue, Northwestern, or Illinois, where there's even less history between the teams.

Illinois: Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue
Indiana: Purdue, Michigan State, Maryland
Iowa: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska
Maryland: Rutgers, Penn State, Indiana
