Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Maybe, but I kinda doubt that WMU could really afford to pay Fleck 3 million a year.

1.5 million to 1.8 million might be a little more reasonable for Western Michigan.

There are a few billionaires that could "donate" an asinine amount on WMU football. I'd rather they invest in WMU's hockey, given that they play in a major conference and aren't stuck looking for Boise State lightning in a bottle, but I'm not said billionaire.

It's now been confirmed by Fleck himself that he's taking the Minnesota job. M

I like the hiring. He reminds people of Brewster, but remember, Brewster never had head coaching experience, while Fleck has head coaching success at the D1 level. Months ago, way before this latest Minnesota cluster**** came to the head, I heard Fleck described as "a Brewster that can actually coach football".

Plus, he already knows how to lose to Wisconsin, so there's that.

He reminds me more of Kill, having success with a lower level D1 program and getting noticed by the big conferences for his success.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

It's a kill-Brewster hybrid. Sort of like chili with some pork ribs in it.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

You know, a lot of football crazies in this town did wanna kill Brewster.

Oh, wait.

Except he did it at about a 20 year younger age than Kill. Fleck was the hottest, most talked about young college football coach out there, and MN landed him. This is the kind of hire that the University of MN doesn't make. In the past, the PJ Flecks of the world have hung up on the Gophers AD, and they've ended up with their 7th choice, which is what Jerry Kill was during that hiring process.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

I want Fleck to do well. It was a great season that will honestly not be recreated. Fleck would be going into next season with a freshman QB against USC in SoCal. No way they're going to run the table again, and a one loss WMU likely won't get into a new Year's Day bowl.
@nick But yeah, would be nice if the money that was put up for Fleck would go toward a new Lawson.

Credit Kill.

Same happened in BBall. IMO Pitino was...for a while didn't appear to be...and now is beginning to realize his potential as a top coaching prospect.

There are plenty of good coaches out there, so going down to 7th on your list doesn't necessary mean you're getting a bad coach, but it is a bit of a kick in the pants.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Basketball it seems, more than any other sport, matters more about the players than the coach.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Sounds like Minnesota AD railroaded the previous coach under the guise of not approving his support of his players during their recent "scandal". I am willing to bet they had their eyes on Fleck the whole time. Certainly the ADs right. Shrewd move.

I've heard that Les Miles was in town and interested in the job.

The previous coach was anything but railroaded. The incident in question may have been the straw the broke the camel's back and gave them an out, but it was a serious ****** up on his part.

Would he stand a chance of being successful at MN without the resources available to him the way LSU provided? It seems like Jimminy Flick was the better choice for a program like MN.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

I heard someone say yesterday that Les Miles was our backup plan. I almost p_ssed myself laughing.

Honest question as I didn't follow the whole thing but were any players convicted of anything? Investigation still ongoing?

The local prosecutor declined to prosecute (twice). The athletes are being investigated under a U of M student conduct code. It appears they are accused of violating a recent "yes means yes" policy that requires actual affirmation ahead of time that the student wants to have sex.
