Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Guys like Finebam put Clemson 2nd in spite of all of their close games, I think they should be 4th behind Michigan and Washington. He's not the only one.

Had to go back and dig up this gem. Gee, that Finebaum guy is such a southern school hype machine!!

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

I take part of the "before the bowl game" back. I went back and read the GPL post for myself. Looks like it was after the bowl game he posted this. Shame on me I guess for not confirming what I was told.

That being said, I still believe they had to know they were going this route before the bowl game. Which is what I have a problem with.

Wouldn't be surprised if they had decided before the bowl game. As he was fired in the end, he must not have been delighting Coyle, etc beforehand as they easily could have looked the other way.

Also, its not a big deal if they fire him before or after the bowl game in my book. But it is a big deal if they lied to the public about that.

If you're going to act on principle, be principled yourself. The U of M claims to have acted on principle, but in the end, they just wanted to protect their cash cow before their principles. If they had fired TC, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Minnesota plays that game. Not a single player would have taken the field. Thus, the U of M gets less money.

This is cowardice on their part.

uhm, I don't think the U loses that much, compared to the conference as a whole...there may have been pressure from the B1G to not act before the game.

I think you should really read back through the full football thread at GPL. No one comes out of this unscathed, but there isn't an owners manual for situations like this so there are no easy answers/solutions. Mistakes were made but without dragging it out here I think you're not giving them their full due on how it was handled also.

The Big Ten pads the expense payout for the bowl enough that Minnesota will probably collect five figures by staying under budget. Once that money gets taken out of the bowl payout, there isn't that much left that is going back to the Big Ten.

I thought the Big Ten member schools SHARED all Bowl money? Therefore, the Big Ten would be just as upset, if not more so if Minnesota did not participate in a bowl thus reducing the payout to all member schools?

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Absolutely it was dumb. But fireable? Even before the game the players and likely the recruits had the perception the school didn't support any of them. After this? Yikes.

In the long run, this might be for the best, however, it doesn't look great right now.
Well I don't think he got fired for this alone. But this alongside the **** ticket sales, a recruit being involved in the sexual assault debacle, and not beating any real opponents probably did him in.

Claeys only offense was calling out his bosses' BS. They claimed he suspended the players and he called them on it.
Well Coyle just recently said Tracy was in on the suspensions the entire time and fully agreed to them. I doubt Coyle would just lie about it and Claeys has every reason to save face with his players.

JT Barrett is returning for his senior year, due to lack of any ability to play as a passing quarterback

All the bowl payout money is collected into a giant pool by the Big Ten, but each bowl team gets a specific amount out of that pile of cash to cover their travel costs/expenses/unsold tickets for their bowl. For the smaller bowls, that amount the Big Ten gives out for expenses is pretty close to the actual payout, so there's more financial incentive for a thrifty team than the league as a whole. This is a good article on how it works in the Big Ten: http://www.startribune.com/bloated-bowl-season-a-bonus-for-gophers-bank-accounts/363566171/

All signs point to fleck being named MN HC tomorrow.

RIP that poor msn's career.

Joe Mixon is going pro. Hopefully he is punching higher than his weight.

The big rumor is WMU is offering 30mil/10yr. We shall see.

Do you want to be locked down for a decade at $3 mill at a mid-major college in Michigan or move up to another school? The length of the offer may both interest him or also be what kills it.

He's on his way up. WMU is not a destination. Neither is Minnesota, but it's a big step up on the way to bigger things.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

TBH, Fleck is best known for being wacky, and out-recruiting the rest of the conference. Best case scenario is that he's a CEO type coach (Bowden, Beamer, Swinney) Worst case, and Minnesota is hiring Tim Brewster 2.0, who is best known now as a great recruiter and nothing else.

It hardly keeps him in K-Zoo for the next ten years. All it does is just raises the asking price for the big program that really wants him in another year or 2.
