College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Maryland sucking is a pretty safe bet, too. (I'm bitter because my daughter is about to force me to be informed about them for the next 4 years.)

My condolences. But, who knows, maybe in 4 years they'll be part of the Big Ten or something?

At least she gets an exciting campus that will riot after every sporting event regardless of the actual outcome. :p (Or has that changed since the 90s?)

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Talk about an opportunity, decent budget, good location, good but not oppressive schedule etc. Maryland might be the most underperforming football team in the country...couple of ideas...fire the Fridge and get a better coach, cut back on the insane clown posse uniforms and set some expectations on the AD that football at that school and in that conference shouldn't be a weakness.

Fridge still has a halo around here despite last year's horrorshow. You can always gauge a DC area personality's popularity by the frequency Tony K. drops his name, and Fridge is off the charts.

My enduring memory of the Terps is their hot streak in the 70's. I am old.

The red jerseys are nice. The black kit is an abortion.

They've sunk like a rock to 19th party school, thank god. She's been warned not to go near the high rise dorms.

And keep her couch or chairs nailed down. I hear those are highly sought after for the bonfires.

The football stadium there is decent at least. The team stinks, but the stadium is all right. Sitting in the upper deck looks rather perilous though.

BYU considers going independent in football, moving to the WAC for their other sports

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5472642

That's going to put a crimp in the MWC's plan to get a BCS berth.

How does this benefit BYU? I figure this conference is only a step or two away from an autobid. Like you said, this might kill that idea (certainly it would put it in doubt).

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Doesn't make sense to me. BYU doesn't have the pull to get a Notre Dame type deal.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Maybe they figure this way they won't be limited to a conference schedule and can play two or three games at the same time. Mormon Style.

I think their belief is that they can get a decent TV deal that may pay them more money than they would get from the MWC. They will fill their schedule with WAC teams, plus probably the service academies and a BCS team or 2 each year, so they expect to get into a decent bowl every season, where they would keep all of the bowl money. And if they have a special season, they could get a BCS invite, where they would keep all of that money as well.

I wonder if they just aren't happy about Boise entering the conference and with Utah gone, there's no reason for them to stay in the MWC.

And just who do they think they're going to get the money from? I don't think there's a line of networks ready to bang on their door for BYU athletics. As for the BCS bid, they're likely far better off staying in the MWC and getting that BCS auto-bid and splitting the money that way, ensuring a steady stream of income.

Agreed. If it were very easy to do, it seems a lot of other schools would be doing it, rather than the shift over time to most teams being in conferences.

Or just spread out and knock on the doors of opposing teams to ask them for a few hours of their time. The game program will provide info on players and guidance for your spiritual life.

The mighty Seagull spoketh and told them to leave. They'll do anything for those birds.

Also, Steve Young might have given them money :P
