College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

For the last few seasons I have stirred the pot a bit with my prediction for Notre Dame football...so, since this will produce several responses including the words 'irrelevant' and 'sucks' but won't have as many pickle and fat jokes...here it goes:

(I'm not impartial, have no issues with being viewed as overly optimistic etc.)

I think they go 8-4, maybe 9-3. There isn't a game on there they can't win, only because USC will be having a transition year of some sort. As has been noted, Weis recruited great players and turned them into a terrible team. Kelly appears to be able to take mid-range players and get more out of them. Remains to be seen if the prima-donnas (as Kelly has described them) can be tough enough to play the way Kelly wants for 4Q vs blowing leads late.

When you read up on all the things Kelly has changed, such as having a training table so the players can eat real meals vs. getting out of Weis' practices after the dining halls had closed and eating at the McDonald's in the union, the increased strength and conditioning program etc. along with some of his comments about how the team was run like a waiting room for the NFL draft vs. guys trying to win today's game and worrying less about strategery and more about execution...I think it can only be an improvement.

They also will have one DC vs. 2-3 like they had last year.

Still, new coach, inexperienced QB, new system etc. 8-4 will be a good year.

Who else has a favorite they can offer some insight into?

edit: the irish also just got commitments from 4 recruits in the last 24 hours including 4 star RB Justice Hayes and DE Aaron Lynch. Maybe Kelly can recruit too.

Kelly ain't going to take no guff from anybody. I've listen to him cuss a bluestreak at guys for messing up in practice, and I lived at least 200 yards away from the practice fields at GVSU. Kelly can turn on the charm in front of the camera's, but he can also make a sailor blush when he wants to. He's also smart enought to work with what he's got as well. The quick turn arounds he had at CMU and Cincy are evidence of that. Neither of them were really full of guys that he recuited. ND will lose some guys because of his style, but probably most of them are malcontents who are just not going to respond to him.

I was doing a parabolic mic for ESPN at Central and got *****ed at for not keeping on Kelly enough. All I could think was, "It's not like you can use anything that comes out of his mouth on TV anyways." But the job paid well so I kept my mouth shut and followed directions.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

It may be that Weis' two biggest contributions were stocking the team with several top 5 recruiting classes and losing enough games to perfectly time his departure with Kelly's ascension up the ranks. A few less losses and Weis might be there for another few years by which time Kelly is coaching another team...would USC have made a run at him post-Pete? If RichRod has another bad year could it have been Michigan? The NFL?

His past success indicates he has a better chance than most to succeed...and ND needed somebody with some real coaching chops to come in and take advantage of the talent loafing around there...he gets a situation where he isn't replacing Joe Pa or Carroll, any coach will be viewed as better than Weis but the program isn't in the dumps talent wise...given the recruiting and facilities, he probably got the best 40th ranked team in the country.

He's not much better at gametime either. :D

That's good news, thanks.

Brian Kelly received verbal commitments from 4 players with the whirlwind weekend being capped off by 4-star defensive end Aaron Lynch from Florida.

Lynch is the top defensive recruit ND has landed since Manti Te'o.

He chose the Irish over Florida and Florida State and also had offers from schools including Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina and Ohio State.

...

Lynch joins three other recruits who committed to the Irish Friday. According to our partners at Irisheyes.com, Cornerback Jalen Brown from MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas made his decision late last night to join Notre Dame's 2011 class.

He committed to Notre Dame without visiting campus. The first time he'll get a chance to see Notre Dame will be his official visit in the fall.

Brown finished his junior season with 36 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.

He chose Notre Dame over Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Nebraska

Also on defense, Anthony Rabasa, a 6-3, 215 pound 3-star defensive end from Miami, Florida said yes to Coach Kelly's staff.

And on offense, 4-star runningback Justice Hayes is coming to South Bend by way of Grand Blanc, Michigan. He's 5-10 with 4.45 speed and listed as the 16th best runningback in America. Hayes chose the Irish over Michigan and Michigan State.

I think that is a shade optimistic. My FWIW prediction (T = toss-up):

W Purdue
W Michigan
T at Michigan State
T Stanford
L at BC
L Pitt
W Western Michigan
T vs Navy
W Tulsa
T Utah
W vs Army
L at USC

5 wins, 3 losses, 4 toss-ups, so:

06% 5-7
25% 6-6
38% 7-5
25% 8-4
06% 9-3

94% at least 6-6
69% at least 7-5
31% at least 8-4

Three way tie for 2nd? The trick is to finish 1-2 while losing the game to your rival and not slipping behind someone else.

Uh, very few teams go unbeaten, so one loss to a non-division team is not going to have as great an impact as you think. Since 1st tiebreaker is head-to-head and 2nd tiebreaker is normally division record, the simplest thing under your scenario is that both teams have clinched their division prior to the last-week of the season rivalry game, meaning they'll get to play each other 2 weeks in a row guaranteed.

I think it's far less likely for the rivalry game to knock someone out of the title game than you think. Odds are they'll either already be in or out prior to that game ever being played, since all the intra-divisional games will have already been played.

Edit: Remember, you don't have to finish 1-2, you just have to finish atop your respective divisions. A 5-4 conference record could do that if one division is particularly weak relative to the other.

Yah, if head-to-head is the tiebreaker for second, the team whose rival is first and who they lost to, is odds-on to have the edge on that one. As their one loss to their rival makes it less likely that they have a head-to-head loss to the team they are tied for second with and who has the same number of conference losses.

Delany just got done speaking at Big Ten Media Days. Says they'll meet and determine the two conferences in 30-45 days. Hopes for a title game in December of 2011, site to be determined. He says they may look to quickly lock down a site for next year on a short term deal, and then expand and look at more options.

The thing about the title game has me thinking that we're gonna have an indoor game in year one... I'm not sure where we go from there... I don't know if this is just posing or if they would really consider an outdoor "Northern" title game...

Why on earth would you commit to a school before ever visiting campus?

He may be a manchild who can toss 300 pound linemen around and eat QB's for breakfest, but he's still a seventeen year old kid. Most 17 year olds are about as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

I know some of you give some credibility to Boise State, especially their complaints that no big team is willing to do a home/home with them. The big team says "too small", BSU complains- you are chicken.

Well, recent events in Boise may be showing that BSU is on the hypocritical side of the issue.

Last week, the university president made some serious accusations about Idaho's fans up in the Kibbie Dome, supposedly reacting to an article in the student newspaper at Idaho. He thought that the fans up in Moscow were drunk and classless... but at the end of the story, he backed the current coach's opinion that it's not really worth going up to play their top rival every year.

Really? Your rival game isn't important?

BSU says that now that they are in the Mountain West Conference, the way too small stadium in Moscow, the Kibbie Dome, which seats a mere 16,000, is too small for them to make the effort.

So it's bad if Nebraska thinks that Bronco Stadium is too small, but it's ok if BSU thinks that their #1 in state rival stadium is too small??

Or is it that they think that Idaho is improving enough that they could lose that game and hurt their national credibility?

SI sports writer Andy Staples has an opinion- http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andy_staples/07/30/boise.state/index.html

Basically, if you think BSU's argument that no big school is willing to go to Boise is credible, you may want to re-think that.

(yes, this editorial was quite biased, from a Vandal Fan)

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

It's because BSU has gone from being the small fish to being a bigger fish. It's a natural transition. :D

I saw this the other day, and I must admit that I agree with you on this... It's hypocrisy... I support BSU and their fight to become a true contender, but you can't do stuff like this... If you want to leave Idaho behind, fine... Just shut up about it and move on... Don't call the kettle black though...

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

I hope they do get some sort of rotation going for it, but for 2011 Lucas Oil is fine in my opinion. Sure beats Ford Field.

While I'd love to have Ford Field because it's home state, I feel it's overrated. It's probably because the only time I've ever seen it full has been for basketball games, but that place just does not seem to have atmosphere for football. Although the Lions, MAC, and high school championship games that only fill half the stadium are probably not good measures for that.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Come sanctions of WVU. Maybe Cuse can finally beat them if they give them a USC like penalty.
