College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

So:
Sugar bowl gets the fists pick since they loose the SEC champ.
Fiesta gets the next pick since they loose the B12 champ.
Orange gets first pick.
Fiesta gets next pick.
Sugar gets what's left.

thus the assumption is that the bowls will be filled:
Sugar: Florida
Fiesta: B10 team
Orange: TCU
Fiesta: Boise State
Sugar: Cincinnati

That would give:
BCS National Championship Game - Alabama vs. Texas
Orange Bowl - Georgia Tech vs. TCU
Sugar Bowl - Florida vs. Cincinnati
Fiesta Bowl - Iowa vs. Boise State

Yawn fest for all 5 games.
Rose Bowl - Oregon vs. Ohio State (obviously)

that's how i understand it.

fwiw, mark may has:
BCS National Championship Game - Alabama vs. Texas
Fiesta Bowl - TCU vs. Boise State
Orange Bowl - Iowa vs. Georgia Tech
Sugar Bowl - Florda vs. Cincinnati
Rose Bowl - Oregon vs. Ohio State (obviously)

and lou holtz (who sounds as if he has had some sort of stroke more and more each week) has:
BCS National Championship Game - Alabama vs. Texas
Fiesta Bowl - Penn State vs. Boise State
Orange Bowl - Cincinnati vs. Georgia Tech
Sugar Bowl - Florda vs. TCU
Rose Bowl - Oregon vs. Ohio State (obviously)

in holtz's scenario, and i know it has happened before, but i'll be surprised and p1ssed if penn state gets in over iowa. both would sell a ton of tickets so that's a wash and iowa owns the head to head. both lost to ohio state (iowa in ot), and i think you have to discount iowa's loss to northwestern because of the injury to stanzi...

full disclosure, sister-in-law and brother-in-law are iowa grads

It helps that Iowa has never been to the Fiesta Bowl either, all new experience and the better team.

I think that if the orange bowl were to take Cincinnati, that the Fiesta would be hard pressed to chose between TCU and Boise State. I suspect that the bowls might do some type of negotiation on who gets who.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Brad Edwards, the ESPN BCS Analyst is saying that had Texas lost, TCU would have played Alabama for the NC.

his projection is:

BCS National Championship - Texas vs. Alabama
Fiesta - Boise State vs. TCU
Orange - Iowa vs. Georgia Tech
Sugar - Cincinnati vs. Florida
Rose - Ohio State vs. Oregon

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Other bowl of intrigue is the Gator Bowl. They are trying to get permission from the ACC to invite FSU. They have a Big East/Big 12/Notre Dame tie-in for the other team.

But i'd like to see them invite Miami as well. That would only be fitting for Bowden to lose to his biggest rival in his last game ever. :D

Instead it will probably be a Pittsburgh or Nebraska.

Next year the Gator Bowl will switch affiliation to SEC vs Big Ten.

Gator Bowl (which as of this writing has an accepted bid from West Virginia) couldn't have taken Nebraska anyway; they were only able to select a Big 12 team twice out of the four year cycle, and they took Texas Tech in 2008 and Nebraska last year.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Wonder if Tebow's going to cry every time the NFL team he holds a clipboard for loses.

Obviously you're a frustrated Florida State fan. I have no problem with him crying. He's all about the University of Florida. College football needs more guys like Tebow. Great player, leader, and person.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

If Bozo State plays TCU in a BCS game, that's a major league cop out. The MWC and the WAC already have 3 bowl games where they are supposed to play each other- had TCU and BSU lost a NC game, this might be the match up in Boise for the Humanitarian Bowl....

Also, it's a big cop out to prevent the Utah-Alabama blowout again as well as the BSU-OU shocker again. We don't need to find out that the WAC and MWC are actually competetive, do we?

OTOH, it would probably be the only decent bcs game.

Again, my true hope for the champ game is a mistake filled offensive disaster with no real defense. 2-0 because a long snap goes over the head of the punter though the end zone. I would be SO happy if that's how the championship is decided. I don't care which team wins.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Penn State and Iowa are clamoring for one spot, only one can be selected as the 2nd Big Ten team who will get blown out in a BCS game along with Ohio State.

If the Fiesta Bowl takes a Big 10 team, it will probably be Iowa - but it wouldn't shock me if they took Penn State because the Nittany Lions helped propel the Fiesta into the big time. If it's the Orange Bowl, who knows what they'll pick. If the Big 10 is still there for the Sugar Bowl, they'll take Penn State because PSU has played there before and they like JoePa.

There isn't supposed to be, but it wouldn't surprise me if there is collusion between the bowl organizers to shut TCU and Boise out by having them play each other in the Fiesta.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

I wouldn't be surprised. The only reason USC got to play Michigan in the Rose Bowl in 2004 was because of the Rose Bowl rules.

It wouldn't really take any collusion for that to happen.

Orange: Georgia Tech v (pick #3)
Fiesta: (pick #2) v (pick #4)
Sugar: (pick #1) v (pick #5)

Sugar will take Florida--no doubt at all.
Fiesta has the next choice--probably Boise State, I would think, to fill their stands (they travel well).
Orange will pick Penn State or Iowa.
Fiesta will then take TCU over Cincinnati--no contest.
Sugar will be stuck with Cincinnati.

No collusion at all would still keep Boise State and TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. The only way it could happen differently is for Fiesta to pick Iowa over Boise State with pick #2, and I don't think that would be their best choice.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

TCU traveled quite well to SDSU. I bet they will travel quite well for a bowl game.

I hate Florida State, and I loathe Tebow. That last nail is always tricky.

Sure. The only picks that are set in stone are Florida as the #1 pick and Cincinnati as the #5 pick. Those two will play each other in the Sugar Bowl, no doubt at all.

What is up in the air is the order that TCU, Boise State and Iowa/Penn State are taken. The draft order is Fiesta-Orange-Fiesta. I would think, just based on location, that Fiesta would prefer Boise State and TCU and Orange would prefer the Big Ten team.

Maybe Fiesta would take Iowa over Boise State with that first pick, but I doubt it (and the Fiesta has apparently said as much to the press). Maybe Orange would take TCU over Penn State or Iowa, but again I don't think they will. I think the real "suspense" in the selections is whether the Orange Bowl goes with Penn State or Iowa.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Whatever little respect I had for Charlie Weis is now gone.

Keep your fat mouth shut.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Hah. Good plays by Alabama's QB are "Tebow-esque."

These announcers are worse than Pam Ward.

Edit: What a drive.
Pam Ward is the Devil. Hope somebody was smart enough to bury her under a snow pile before her crew left Grand Rapids yesterday.

I think Ingram won the Heisman today. The invitees to NYC will probably be Ingram, Spiller, Gerhart and Tebow or McCoy. If they want some novelty, give it to Suh. The guy's a monster on defense.
No kidding. Suh probably played himself into a Top 5 draft pick yesterday, and does make a case for being the ONE Pick. I would love to see the Lions get their hands on him. :D
ESPN's guru is projecting TCU vs Boise is the Fiesta.

I think THAT would be the best game of them all, frankly.
It would be a fun matchup, but I would still love to see Boise go to the Rose and Pimp-Slap Ohio State around.

Whatever little respect I had for Charlie Weis is now gone.

Keep your fat mouth shut.
Don't you mean he should shove another Donut into it?? ;) :D

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Reposting to reflect new running defense rankings:

For craps and giggles, comparing Gerhart and Ingram against the top 50 run defenses they played (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/fo...team/rushing_defense_byRUSHYDS_PER_GAME.html).

Ingram faced 2 - Florida at #14 with 113 yards and 3 TD and LSU at #44 with 144 yards and 0 TD.

Gerhart faced 6 - ASU at #18 with 125 yards and 1 TD, Arizona at #22 with 123 yards and 2 TDs, OSU at #25 with 96 yards and 2 TDs, Cal at #27 with 136 yards and 4 TDs, Oregon at #38 with 223 yards and 3 TDs, and USC at #42 with 178 yards and 3 TDs.

Ingram averaged 128 yards and 1.5 TDs against 2 teams, while Gerhart averaged 147 yards and 2.5 TDs, and this again is against top running defenses, with Gerhart facing 3 times as many.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Hadn't seen the Pete Carroll story. 1) makes Weis look terrible, 2) makes Carroll look terrible. A lot of fans are happy with both results. :D

Meanwhile he's claiming it was "out of context." I can understand that a reporter screwed him by narcing out an off the record comment. But how exactly can this be "out of context"?
"Let me ask you this question: You guys know about things that go on in different places. Was I living with a grad student in Malibu, or was I living with my wife in my house? You could bet that if I were living with a grad student here in South Bend, it would be national news. He’s doing it in Malibu and it’s not national news. What’s the difference? I don’t understand. Why is it okay for one guy to do things like that, but for me, I’m scrutinized when I swear.”
Charlie, if you were living with a grad student in South Bend, we'd assume it was a nursing intern in a weight loss intervention program.

Turns out Weis has already come out and apologized and said he was just making hypothetical comments.

So now its just Weis that looks bad.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

I know Iowa beat Penn State, but I think the Nittany Lions will be the last team for the BCS...

Well... that part really only makes Weis look like a public figure retracting his statement to cover his rather expansive posterior. It doesn't affect the probability of truth of the original statement.

The busy little bees of the interwebs will doubtless take care of the rest.

Hypotheticals about sex are better when they involve box turtles.
