Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Id like to see Tate and Clausen stay but if they believe they will get drafted high I can see why they would leave.

Me too. The only hope is if it's already a deep draft at QB, which would keep Jimmy in SB. I have no idea.

Maybe Brady Quinn has been whispering to Jimmy that sitting on the bench on a craptacular team is no way to spend a year. I hope so. OTOH, Brady may be thinking about the benefits of throwing to Tate next year in Cleveland.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

If Jimmy projects in the top half of the first round, you'd have to think that the economics (risk of injury [see Bradford] and likelihood of some sort of rookie salary cap in the next CBA) weigh heavily in favor of him leaving.

I guess the question is whether he'll project in the top half of the first round, and that will mainly come down to where he evaluates relative to Locker (who may or may not come out), McCoy, and Bradford, and which NFL teams project as likely to take a QB in the first round.

He can play for a craptacular team in South Bend and get paid nothing, or he can start/sit on the bench for a craptacular team elsewhere and get $40 million.

Tough call.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Everyone thought Quinn would go top half too and he turned out to be lucky to go 1st round at all. If he leaves it will be entirely for the chance at a big paycheck.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

I think Clausen is going to leave...while he could stay and try to prove some things, the coaching change, punch in the face, and salary implications of staying another year would lead me to believe that he is on his way. Tate will go also, IMO. Those guys have been through 3 forgettable seasons and I wouldn't blame any of them for leaving.

What could make them stay?...the school itself: the fact that they aren't isolated from the student body like most big time schools and therefore might actually think of themselves as student/athletes, the accomplishment of getting the degree and the sense of responsibility to the younger guys and fellow students...I think that will be part of it but not enough to convince them to stay.

What else could the school do?....name a big time coach very quickly and give that person a chance to get in there and influence the big names prior to the semester ending.

Interesting they named Ianello the interim 'coach'. He is a tremendous recruiter, responsible for bringing in many of the big names...Brown was Asst HC, so you assume he isn't staying.

Assume for a second that theyhave somebody lined up, possibly Ianello is one of the guys that remains to get some continuity, keep the recruiting progressing and contribute the 'ND-ness' to the new staff. RB coach Alford should also stay.

Ultimately, though, the shortcomings in a couple of statistically excellent games is why I'm pushing more for Tate than Clausen, as Tate has inarguably continued to make transcendent plays when games are on the line (witness, punt return vs. Pitt, onside kick recovery and TD vs. Navy, and so on), plus he might be the most dangerous guy in college football with the ball in his hands in the open field.
Joique Bell says HI! :p

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Bowden will be making some sort of announcement tomorrow regarding his future. Rumor has it he was offered to come back, but with even less authority then he currently has (considering he spends 90%+ of the time without a headset...)

The Heisman *should* be Gerhart's, considering what he's rolled up to end the season with the "fresh in the voters mind" nonsense.

38 Car, 223 Yds, 3 TDs
29 Car, 178 Yds, 3 TDs
20 Car, 136 Yds, 4 TDs
29 Car, 205 Yds, 3 TDs (and threw a TD).

If he had a Trojan or a Gator on the side of his head, there would be no discussion. Ingram's stats look laughable in comparison.

Ay, there's the rub. You want to go high in the first round so that they have to fork over some serious dough to sign you. But the higher you go, the more craptacular of a supporting cast and starting-QB mentor you'll have...

Quinn's drop was somewhat predictable, though... he really had one shot at the top half of the first round, and that was Miami. There weren't a lot of teams that were looking to pick a QB high. Miami, the Raiders, and the Browns, and the Browns got exactly what they wanted with a premier OL and Quinn a lot cheaper than he would have been as the #3.

Brady is also a cautionary tale to Clausen about staying in school; when you stick around an extra year, the scouts all get a chance to take your good points for granted and start picking apart your faults. Something similar happened with Leinart in the previous draft.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

ND's in a weird position where we get massive amounts of attention from the networks, but they generally all have a vested interest in proceeding to talk about how we're not all that good and don't deserve all the attention (and that's only getting worse as we play fewer road games).
You mean it's only getting worse as your team gets worse and worse yet still gets put on tv the same amount of time?

Or starts the year ranked/picked to be in the title game by some talking heads?

Lou Holtz still thinks they're going to be in the title game :p

Lou Holtz is insane. He doesn't count.

ESPN is reporting that Bobby Bowden will announce his retirement tomorrow.

As we play fewer road games, EsPN has less interest in being positive toward ND because they have fewer ND games on their channels.

I'm not sure it's a disinterest in being positive. Rather, might just be an interest in being realistic.

Clausen for Hobey.

Yeah, but that Russell guy has really done well.:D

Not getting picked by the Raiders is an affirmation not a slight...Quinn may never be a good NFL QB, that would put him in with 80% of the QB's drafted in the NFL. His performance in Cleveland is way too hard to read...the team is a shambles, the coach an idiot, the offense is offensive...if anderson threw for 3k yards a few years ago and now can't score a TD I suspect that is the offense and scheme more than the player.

Quinn is thinking what the other 51 guys are thinking..."get me outta here".
