College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

I'll take Idaho for $200, Alex.

Twice they've scored more than 45 points, and lost. In the 3 other losses, they scored over 20.

3 of the losses, the D were shredded for more than 50.... One other was over 40, and the 5th was 30.

And, thankfully, it still looks as if my Vandals will get an invite to a bowl, hopefully the Humanitarian, so we can go. 7-5 aint too shabby when you look at the past few years. As sad as it sounds, I'm hoping Bozo State gets a BCS bid- that means 3 other WAC teams get bowls, if eleigible. Woot, woot.

Give the Heisman to their quarterback :p

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

It would be hilarious to see the mass hysteria at ABC were there somehow a way for Alabama, Florida, AND Texas to fail to reach the BCS championship game. How many people you think would settle in for a night of TCU/Cincinnati football?

I think a lot of college football fans are sick of the boring alternation between the half dozen Usual Suspects. I know I'd watch TCU-Cincinnati and I know I wouldn't watch an SEC rematch.

But the preferred outcome is to have Boise roll up 60 on the SEC champ. That I would sacrifice a child* to see.

(* don't worry. not one of mine)

I'd watch it too, but then I'd probably also watch Baylor/Vanderbilt if that was the game.

I think the casual fan would likely not be interested in that matchup. Diehards will watch whomever is playing.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Directly? I wouldn't say that. Probably the closest he comes is Navy and UConn, maybe a little bit USC, and the Trojans are hard to place because of how their defense did a 180 from beastly to horrific on either side of the ND game. Vs. Navy, the only obvious failing was when Jimmy sold out to get into the end zone and fumbled at the 1 yd line. Vs. UConn, you can't pick any one play, but the offense was disappointing after we went up 14-0, though Clausen still had two TD passes and a bunch of yards.

Ultimately, though, the shortcomings in a couple of statistically excellent games is why I'm pushing more for Tate than Clausen, as Tate has inarguably continued to make transcendent plays when games are on the line (witness, punt return vs. Pitt, onside kick recovery and TD vs. Navy, and so on), plus he might be the most dangerous guy in college football with the ball in his hands in the open field.

None of Clausen's interceptions has had a direct bearing on the outcome of a game (offhand, I'm not even sure if any have come in a loss). Only the fumble against Navy. Vs. Pitt, the fumble call was complete and utter bull****, I will go to my grave convinced that was an incomplete pass.

When you consider the totality of the team and their respective level of competition, I don't see how you can directly compare the W/L records of Clausen, McCoy, Tebow, and Moore (and even the raw stats for Moore are problematic). McCoy and Tebow are on much more complete teams (UT's defense is being talked up as the best in the country by some of the WWL's talking heads). Moore has played much weaker competition.

That was a question, not a statement. I didn't see McCoy or Tebow play that often, and when I did they helped their team more than hurt it. I did see Clausen play frequently and I think that he played pretty well... but in comparison to either of the other two, I don't know if the intangibles they have can be overcome. JMO. Now, ask me who i think the better pro prospect would be and I would say Clausen hands down.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Correct, although by the same token guys win the Heisman all the time who spend most of their career winning games 70-3 (paging Mr. Tebow, white courtesy telephone please). Hardly crunch time.

If the Heisman is supposed to go to the athlete who has the greatest theoretical position-adjusted WAR, in my mind that is Tate, at least among offensive players.

Then again, if it were an objective award it would go to players on mid-major / minor conference teams most of the time, instead of the hype machine factory schools year after year (c.f., the national championship).

Agreed, like that Rice kid from Rutgers playing for the Ravens.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Kep's just digging into football sabermetrics so he can stick up for a Notre Dame guy.

You say that like it's a bad thing. :p

To be fair, the same argument could be made if we were talking about a kid from, say, Miami OH. I might not be the one making it, though. :D

(Actually, to be really fair, the argument about obscure schools works directly against Notre Dame, which is certainly one of the greatest beneficiaries of the network fluffers.)

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

TBA, you're the most one-sided poster in the history of USCHO whereas I have no dog in this fight, so forgive me if I take your opinion on the matter with a grain of salt. I simply think McCoy has had a better season, but I'm at least willing to consider I might be wrong.

I am completely unbiased, and I think Gerhart should win the Heisman and be named Emperor of Earth.

No. I'm completely unbiased when I say Gerhart is the least deserving heisman candidate since John Elway. If he wins it would be a tragedy and a theft the likes of which this country has never seen.

Front Butt Fired.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

My one fear with the loss of front butt is that the offensive talent will leave. There is speculation that Clausen will leave. Will Tate and Floyd follow? If so the new coach could have a rough first season. Dont get me wrong though....Im glad he's gone.

Not that I think he's a complete and utter lock, but who specifically do you think is better? Or is it just a comment on the weak field overall this year.

Edit: Or did I miss the obvious joke there?

THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD!

As they should be, since forward laterals end a play.

I think Clausen was leaving regardless. I think Tate is borderline; as amazing a player as he is, he's still a bit raw as a WR, and so he might be able to improve his draft position by playing another year at ND. Floyd will almost certainly be back; he's too young to go to the draft, and I doubt he would want to transfer unless we hire Paul Johnson (knocking furiously on wood).

ND's in a weird position where we get massive amounts of attention from the networks, but they generally all have a vested interest in proceeding to talk about how we're not all that good and don't deserve all the attention (and that's only getting worse as we play fewer road games).

Obvious joke is not-so obvious.

My instinct is the reverse: Clausen is 50/50, while Tate's completely dependent on Clausen. Or does he think his draft value will go up with Dayne Crist behind center?

Floyd will be back either way.

It would be great to see them all come back and have a strong season, giving the new coach support while he bridges to the new system and his first recruiting class. That would give them a special place in the ND tradition, and they could all come back for fifty years and be feted as Servants of the Echoes. But this is a pro internship, not a student-athlete experience, and I don't expect anybody to have any sentimental loyalty to a school -- even in South Bend it's just business on all sides. Sentiment is something only we who never had the option to go pro early can afford.

I wasnt sure what the situation with Floyd was. Having him back will help but it will depend on the quaterback. Id like to see Tate and Clausen stay but if they believe they will get drafted high I can see why they would leave.
