Re: Colgate and Starr's last season
I'm finally back home, and now it's time to post my thoughts about yesterday:
I was very fortunate and grateful to return to Hamilton, NY yesterday to see the final men's ice hockey game at Starr Rink. While the building's functionality and amenities pale in comparison to many of the college hockey rinks used today, it did provide the Colgate Raiders with a home ice advantage, especially in front of a sellout crowd with a raucous student section. There are some players that found it intimidating (Don Vaughan and Ted Donato), and even some teams that regularly found it difficult to play there (Brown and Union). Speaking of Union...
The Dutchmen were our final opponent in that rink, and once again, they could not find any sort of magic, especially after winning decisively in Ithaca the night before. Union will forever be 3-25-2 at Starr Rink. As for the game, I'm thrilled that the barn was almost at full capacity for this final men's game. Everyone cheered on Tyson and Jake's goals, and it was great to see the team go out a winner. But I was disappointed the pep band was not in attendance. At least they were at last night's women's game. But they should have been at both games. I also picked up some souvenirs to take home with me - the program from this weekend's games and a souvenir hockey puck with "Starr Rink, final season 1959-2016" written on the puck.
As for next weekend - I don't think there's any 1 team you do or don't want to play, but yesterday, there were 4 possible playoff opponents for us, and in my opinion, Dartmouth was the least desirable of the four. This is primarily due to the long travel, but also had we drew Cornell, it would have definitely gotten the team "fired up", and both Clarkson and RPI have recently witnessed some playoff futility - especially in their home rinks. But perhaps this past weekend's results will give us some momentum going forward. Weather permitting, I will hopefully make it up to Hanover for Friday's game.
