Colgate and Starr's last season

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

This brings up a pet peeve of mine. Help me out here, why do we - and some others in the league - make our games available free, and yet those Ivy Lg teams insist on charging a fee to see their home games? It should be automatic that all ECAC hockey teams offer their video to fans without charge as a mutual courtesy to all. While I enjoy GR's broadcasts on radio it sure would be nice to bank on viewing the games as well. Isn't it time we all played by the same rules?

The league will make everyone pay to view playoff games. They still think no one will go to the games if people watch online for free, not to mention they'll cite the cost of production. Some schools choose to make the investment to drum up interest for the program, some don't.

That was not a 7-4 game! It was 4-4 with under 3 minutes to play. I feel for these guys. They don't know how to quit. Looking forward to cheering them on in Starr next weekend. It will be very emotional, for many reasons. Go 'Gate!!

I see you Magoo !!!

Yeah Shabby I check in every day to see what you and everyone are saying. Obviously a disappointing year what else is there to say. We just give up too many goals. And our best players are graduating.

Looking forward to seeing the new rink next season. While there were some great moments at Starr Rink over the years I can't say I'll miss the place.

Agree, but unfortunately, they don't know how to win, either. When Vesey scored a pp goal less than 8 min. in, our fate was sealed. It's the same merry-go-round.

2010-2011 was a different season with similar results. We finished 4-15-3 (last)/11-28-3 (4 wins and 4 losses actually came during the playoffs, or we would have finished 7-24-3). The stunning end to that season serves as a reminder that we all start at zero in the playoffs. If there's ever a time to believe in your team and hope for a miracle, the playoffs are it! Colgate was the first #12 seed to do the impossible, and Brown did it again just a few years later.

Four home hockey games and lacrosse next weekend. Hope we can win some of them. Congrats to the women's team on a tremendous season.

Is it just me but I want to go to Cornell for the first round. Win or lose that series it would bring some excitement to the playoffs.

Agree. Listening to GR this appeared to be one of the most exciting games of the season, with back and forth, and "fire wagon" hockey as he says. We had every chance to win, and had numerous comebacks, but caught a couple of bad breaks that did us in. Thought we played well with lots of energy for a three-line team. Big question: what's wrong with Finn? Do we go with him or Racine in the playoffs?

Next Saturday's Union game may be the last regular season game at Starr for the men, but it won't be the last game there, period. The women's phenomenal season gives them home playoff games with Harvard Friday at 3 & Saturday at 7 PM. If you have time they are well worth attending.

Colgate says Goodbye to Starr Rink:

In the article, it states that the first game in our new arena will be on October 1 against Army. I'm guessing the early start to next season (possibly the earliest in team history?) is to include the opening of the new rink as part of Homecoming weekend (the football team is scheduled to host Cornell that day). If you also factor in the time of year, it should also make for a beautiful drive to campus along Rte. 20!

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I'm a bit melancholy about this weekend's closing. Been trying to guestimate how many games I've seen at Starr in my 54 years of watching. At ten a year(low) that's 540. At fifteen(prob more like it with playoffs) that's over 800. After Saturday I may never walk into Reid Athletic Center again, I don't watch squeakball.

Too bad Mike Milbury wasn't the speaker this weekend, he doesn't hold back.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Definitely a bittersweet weekend in Hamilton. Although I am/was the most excited for the new rink, which I am hoping will be done amazingly well. Starr is where I developed a love for the game and it can't be replaced.

According to GR's tweets it appears we will have 3 hockey east schools coming to the new barn, (BU, UCONN, and Maine). And in a seemingly odd twist of events play ASU three times away from home. (One neutral site)

As I said before I'm hoping for four points and a trip to Ithaca next weekend (not because I think it'll be easy) but it will bring a real excitement to our fan base in an "off" season

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Also a shoutout to Bob McGaugh who may have seen more games than me. Hope he makes it to the game(s).

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Tomorrow, I will be waking up early, getting in my car, and driving out to Hamilton for the final men's game at Starr Rink. I'm looking forward to a great game. Go 'Gate!

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Not a bad second to the last game at Starr. Charlie played pretty darn well......saved the game twice.....sweet save with 10min to go in 3rd on an attempted shorty. Heard lots of fans talking about what "could have been this year" without the injuries, and early departures. Really wish Andrew Black could have been healthy for the past 2 years....could have been a very solid player for us. I wonder if he will ever be back or should ever come back. A brain is a terrible thing to waste! Where was Zac Hamilton? Not even dressed tonight. Hamilton was packed! Nice to see in late Feb. Saw Dauda getting slices at NY Za before heading over to the Inn. I have to say our captain and Tim H. are class acts. My daughters wanted them to autograph their hats...each one signed and then spent a good amount of time talking to them about their own hockey teams. 2 very happy girls on the ride back to Ithaca!

I have to say that I am going to miss Starr. This Georgia boy learned to love hockey, made some great friends, sang some great Colgate cheers, and watched a lot of great Red Raider hockey in the student section from 1989-93. WE will miss THE RINK!
Hoping for 2 wins tomorrow at Starr to shut her down!
Go 'gate x 2!!!!

We won because Finn played like he did his first two years, even game besides that. If I was RPI I wouldn't want to play us opening round.

I've never seen this before anywhere, tonight #1 Q-Pac plays #2 Yale, #3 Harvard plays #4 SLU, numbers 5-8 all play each other, #9 Union plays #10 Colgate, and #11 Brown plays #12 Princeton. Everyone can move except Q-Pac, Yale and Union.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I was told that there are eighty ex players there for the closing. Joe Wignot sitting in front of me, captain of the 59 hockey AND football teams.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Good luck in your last game at Starr. Only got to see 3 games there (and 2 of them weren't good for us :( ) but enjoyed the feel of the rink. The fans were awesome and some of the friendliest I've met in the ECAC. Hopefully all that, and more, translates over to the new rink.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I'm glad I got to see Starr one last time. Sure was an exciting game. My students had a great time. I was quite nervous about our two goal lead holding up. We had trouble at times clearing the zone, but did a great job with face offs and along the boards. We were seated right on the home goal line, so had a great few of some of Finn's excellent saves. Saved the game for us on more than one occasion. It's a level of excitement and passion I just don't get from local professional hockey. But the new rink looks like its coming along nicely. Will miss Van Doren field as well.
