Colgate and Starr's last season

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Tell me what you did to justify that trip and I will do it with my students!

I made it into a college visit. We leave our school at about 7 in the morning, go to a class, eat at the cafeteria, do a tour and info session, then we went to town for Slices and to the game. Got home at 1 am the next day. But my principal and guidance counselor are very supportive. We usually go on a day off such as Veterans, Columbus day, or a conference day. I got a sub yesterday since it was the last weekend at Starr. We've been to the college 9 times now in the last 3 years. We're a tiny high school of only about 200 students, but every day I see at least one person wearing Colgate gear, which is pretty cool.

Exciting 2-1 win in Starr Rink today. What a great way to go out. The Spinks really proved their worth this weekend. On to the playoffs. We're playing well lately. Hopefully we can make some noise.

Thanks for the memories Starr Rink.

Well said ColSkate. Very fitting that the team get a sweep on the last home weekend at Starr Rink. It was also good to see the attendance -- over 2100.
Was there some kind of ceremony to mark the occasion? I heard there were a lot of former players there.

Yes. There was a ceremonial puck drop with a player from the first team, in 1959 (forget his name - Shabby will know) before the game. Also members of the 1959-'61 or '62 teams that first played in Starr Rink were introduced after the first period. The names of many former players were read over the PA during the game. Shabby had heard that about 80 former players were back for the weekend; not sure if that's the exact number but it was a good turnout in any case. As you said, it was great to see the stands packed. Hope we can have crowds like todays next year in the '65 Arena.

The seniors and their parents were introduced before the game, and their stats over the course of their 4 year careers were read off.

I'll post my thoughts about today's game sometime tomorrow when I return home, but in the meantime, it appears we will be traveling to Hanover next weekend.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Huge congratulations to the boys on their weekend wins.....their final games at Starr! It breaks my heart to think that I won't be seeing the 5 Seniors play next season. They are a collective CLASS ACT and I feel fortunate to know them personally. It was wonderful to see so many alumni/players over the weekend! Great crowds both games.
I knew today would be tough for me, being a part of Colgate Hockey for 40+ years. I was SO happy for the team after their win! And then Coach Vaughan, during the players stick salute to the fans at center ice, got down on his hands and knees and kissed the ice on the block C. I lost it and started crying.
Go get 'em, 'Gate!! Thanks to the good 'ol barn, Starr Rink, for tons of great memories.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

It was Joe Wignot captain of the football and hockey teams in 59. Joe, wife, kids and grandkids sat in row in front of me. A wonderful family !

More trivia, Joe Wignot #11 scored the first goal ever at Starr in an OT win over Cornell . Kulevich #11 scored the final goal at Starr yesterday, also the game winner.

Don't know if I can sell that to my principal with 5th graders, rr13, though I've thought about it. They get their daily dose, believe me. Are any of your students impressed enough to apply...or attend?!

Was it Darcy Murphy who had the misconduct? Could not see the play. Felt awful for him with his parents there in the stands.

Congrats to the coaches and teams that made Starr a legendary (though not always intimidating) place to play and watch a hockey game!

Best of luck to WHOC today.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Got a history of Starr Friday night in our Silver Puck registration pack. 2nd sentence of the write-up is "The building may lack modern amenities but in its dankness lies a charm of a bygone era of hockey's unrelenting ingress from the pond to the settled barn." Never thought I'd see "dank" used in a complimentary fashion...

Looking forward to one more game in Starr this afternoon! Had to bail out after the first period yesterday, the Boss in Rochester took precedence. Hoping the women send out the old barn in style...

Yes. it was Murphy. 5 for clipping and game misconduct. Sad to see him leave the game that way.

I've taken 9 different groups of students over the last few years. A few applied, none have been accepted yet. Our high school is pretty small, about 250 kids. About 50 of them have made the Colgate trip at some point. So pretty much every day at work I see at least one kid in a Colgate shirt. They really did enjoy the game though. Is there a picture anywhere of what the new rink is going to look like, or what it's capacity and amenities will be?

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I'm finally back home, and now it's time to post my thoughts about yesterday:

I was very fortunate and grateful to return to Hamilton, NY yesterday to see the final men's ice hockey game at Starr Rink. While the building's functionality and amenities pale in comparison to many of the college hockey rinks used today, it did provide the Colgate Raiders with a home ice advantage, especially in front of a sellout crowd with a raucous student section. There are some players that found it intimidating (Don Vaughan and Ted Donato), and even some teams that regularly found it difficult to play there (Brown and Union). Speaking of Union...

The Dutchmen were our final opponent in that rink, and once again, they could not find any sort of magic, especially after winning decisively in Ithaca the night before. Union will forever be 3-25-2 at Starr Rink. As for the game, I'm thrilled that the barn was almost at full capacity for this final men's game. Everyone cheered on Tyson and Jake's goals, and it was great to see the team go out a winner. But I was disappointed the pep band was not in attendance. At least they were at last night's women's game. But they should have been at both games. I also picked up some souvenirs to take home with me - the program from this weekend's games and a souvenir hockey puck with "Starr Rink, final season 1959-2016" written on the puck.

As for next weekend - I don't think there's any 1 team you do or don't want to play, but yesterday, there were 4 possible playoff opponents for us, and in my opinion, Dartmouth was the least desirable of the four. This is primarily due to the long travel, but also had we drew Cornell, it would have definitely gotten the team "fired up", and both Clarkson and RPI have recently witnessed some playoff futility - especially in their home rinks. But perhaps this past weekend's results will give us some momentum going forward. Weather permitting, I will hopefully make it up to Hanover for Friday's game.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

With the Lady Raiders winning 3-2 in overtime this afternoon, Starr Rink literally went out with a BANG!

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Kupsky in goal for Union...I don't believe he is their regular starter. Not to take away from our great win, but that may have been a factor. Win or lose, the Dutchmen would finish where they did, so perhaps that's why they gave him the nod. His record is 1-6-2 this year but he is a San Jose draft pick. Not the most impressive stats, but at 6'4", he will only get better http://www.unionathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8159&path=mhockey

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Fantastic, monumental win for @gatewhockey today! This last weekend at Starr was simply surreal.

Campus Insiders of PLN does a nice job and the announcer(s) are great.

Game Recap:

Good Luck, Colgate!

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Can someone post pictures of the progress on the new rink?. The rest of us would really like to see it. Good you could send off Starr with a win.

I saw the whole thing unfold, I will comment on it after the ECAC decides his fate, with the game misconduct he's out for Friday for sure. Hopefully not Saturday, sometimes the ECAC doles out an extra day.
