Colgate 22-23

I watched todays game. Going into the season I thought Colgate had the best offense talent in the league and showed it today even with Kalty missing. A few breakdowns defensively but your goalie played good enough to get the win. A total team effort against a good Yale team. Will be interesting to see what Yale does against Cornell tomorrow. I think Cornells porus D and goalie will prove to be tough for their offense to overcome against Yale. Gate should take care of Brown.

She was once this year, but we still gave up three. Our goalies are decent but not great. We surrender late goals. We play from behind until the final frame. These are recipes for disaster.

After watching the ECAC heavyweight tilt with Yale and Colgate "I think the decent but not great goaltending was pretty fantastic today'. Osbourne was sharp and gave your team a heck of a chance to win. You guys have one of the best players in Serdachny, think she is leading the NCAA. Greig and O'donohoe are lighting the lamp. Pretty strong team effort today. Yes far from perfect, but a pretty dangerous team handing #1 Yale their second loss today.

Biederman's backward pass to Greig for her breakaway goal was a thing of absolute beauty. The fact that Greig was ready for it says a lot
about her teammates knowing B will find them if they can get free. Same goes for Danielle. Both have a 6th sense!

Regarding TB's continuing concern that we always get outshot by top teams, apparently the quality of the ones we do take is generally sufficient to do the job. Also I think our one-two goaltender punch is as good as anyone's. We may lose some but rarely get blown out... We are also pretty good in big games, it's just those losses you remember most. Some matchups are tougher for us which makes sense. Don't want to play Yale again, they're due.

One more thing, Shabby you are absolutely right, this game was a clone of the first Yale game. Wide open with plenty of chances for both teams. That led me to think about our games with Q as well. They're always similar too only played more controlled and much tighter. In those games it usually comes down to the 3rd or OT before it's decided...always knuckle biters. One thing we are not great at is playing with our goalie pulled late. I prefer not to be there so Coach if we draw Q in the playoffs, pedal to the metal from the first puck drop so no end of game angst...

Given this is the weekend Colgate is celebrating 50 years of Women's Sports with a three-day program honoring and recognizing 5 great Trailblazers of Distinction in Colgate women's athletics, it's not a bad time to do a brief retrospective on Colgate women's hockey as well. As we all remember, women's hockey at Colgate started as a club sport and was very popular and successful to the point they were good enough for Varsity recognition. We also remember that Colgate women's hockey like Brown women's hockey had to eventually sue their respective administrations to achieve that well deserved Varsity status. That was a tough and ugly time but all the wounds eventually healed and now seems so long ago. So what initially happened was we started as a Division III program and dominated and then stepped up to Division 1 status and became a proverbial cellar dweller for a number of years.

When I first became interested in the 2000-01 timeframe what I remember most is how the program began to develop very slowly with a smattering of great players coming in one at a time and our team being known for our goalies always stopping 45-60 shots a game and losing. That's how it was during the Wiley years with few changes until Coach Fargo showed up in 2012-13 and we saw great improvement generated primarily by the superclasses of 2014-15, 2015-16, 2019-20 and maybe even this year's class which is really strong. Everyone knows today's recognizable names but I really wish players like Tara French D '07, Sam Hunt F and Kiira Dosdall D '09, Kim Sass G '12, Ashlynne Rando G '16 could have benefitted from the overall talent today's classes contain because they were extraordinarily good players in their day. Sam Hunt from Alberta was Colgate's first great forward in my opinion and could play with anyone. Her favorite memory, and it was huge at the time, was beating Princeton for the first time a Colgate team had done that. Today the North American professional ranks are seeing more and more Gate players join them and become factors on their teams. The great Jessie Eldridge, Canadian Women's team member and headed for this year's Worlds is presently 4th in scoring in the PWHPA Where she plays for Harveys which is leading the league. The PWHPA plays primarily in Canada but also in the US and is essentially comprised of the best from the US and Canadian women's teams with selected others including some of our favorites...Rosy Demers, Bailey Larson, Malia Schneider and Cat Quirion. Those not playing in the PWHPA or overseas are in the PHF, which includes teams from Boston, Buffalo, NY/NJ, Minnesota, Toronto and Montreal. In the PHF Colgate is represented by Olivia Zafuto on the Boston Pride (my favorite ever Gate Defenseman who was also an all-star at the recent PHF event) and Breanne Wiilson-Bennett on Toronto 6 (scored winning goal against Wisconsin to put us in NCAA finals) at this time. Boston is currently leading the league with Toronto right behind. The PHF teams can be viewed on ESPN+ and the PWHPA can also be streamed. Both leagues showcase some great hockey and are loaded with well-known former rival ECAC players and Olympic hockey icons. Both leagues also appear to be getting close to paying living wages to their players so they may soon even be able to support themselves without having to have 2nd and 3rd jobs. I expect more and more Gate stars will be headed into their ranks in the years to come which will only further increase our visibility for recruiting purposes. Can't wait for Nemo to get her MBA from Providence and start banging people around in pro hockey and kicking butts in the Olympics for the next 10 years with the Czechs...

Thx OT, lived every one of those groundbreaking moments and remember every player who iced her way into Colgate history. Still think it’s cool that Jim Craig’s daughter played at Colgate, too ;-)

Brown gave us fits! It’s all 0-0 after next weekend, but cannot wait to watch it unfold in Hamilton!

It was cool having Jim's daughter here, but although a very good player she wasn't of record book caliber. Sort of like Pierre McGuire's son on the men's team now or Bill Belichick's daughter when she played lacrosse at Gate.

Noticed we're ranked 3rd this week which is higher than I ever recall. That's never a good thing for a Colgate team. I'm much more comfortable with all the WCHA teams knowing they're the best and telling everyone about it all the time. I think Gate and most other ECAC and Hockey East teams do better when we keep our heads down and let the world west of the Columbus, Ohio discount us just like the National selection committee does when picking players for the US Women's Team...are MN, WI, MI and OH the only states in the country with colleges that play hockey?

Lol OT share those same sentiments. It’s a shame bc the ECAC has proven itself to be no pushover, but like you, usually prefer the underdog status. As for Craig, thought the same thing. Just like the family connection to hockey folklore. Bittersweet to be 0.5 behind Yale in the standings. Any other season and ‘Gate would be the RS champion. Guess we’ll have to shoot for the ECAC Title ;-) Will see them in action this w/e in the Capital District. Can’t wait.

Hope we finish strong and you have a great closing weekend experience. Then on to the playoffs and fingers crossed we don't have to play Q...

Last year, we lost to Yale x2 in the regular season, beat them for the ECAC Title, then lost to them again the the NCAA first round at home. Maybe we’re due vs Qpac. They’re both NCAA contenders so any outcome is a toss-up. I’d say both of their goalies are slightly better than ours :-/

Congratulations to all on a great regular season even if we finished a very close 2nd to a team we beat twice. I had hoped that with this possibly being Coach Stone's last regular season game H would put up some sort of fight against Yale but apparently not to be. Embarrassing for them, heaven for Yale! Q ended on a downer weekend too. We have to be really focused in the playoffs. Pedal to the metal. Congrats to Bieds for tying Smigs frosh scoring record, two players who bring a lot of joy to Gate fans which will continue.

I echo Oldtimer's sentiments. Congrats to the Women Raiders for an exciting season! They can contend with any team in the league. Should be an exciting tournament.

Well said, OT. Wish we could have that Cornell game back. Heartfelt congratulations to Yale on a program first.

OSU loss in OT may have bumped us up to No. 3 in PWR?

No. 8 Harvard @ No. 1 Yale
No. 7 Princeton @ No. 2 Colgate
No. 6. St. Lawrence @ No. 3 Quinnipiac
No. 5 Cornell @ No. 4 Clarkson

New season begins Friday, best of three. SLU with a grueling road trip. Nothing is a given, but gotta say I like our chances with Princeton. Anyone else would make me nervous! Always sorry to see the 9-12 programs finish their seasons early. Congrats to Union on the most D1 wins and first win over a ranked team in program history.

Go ‘Gate!

No congratulations to Yale on USCHO women’s page, just more western conference news :-/
As has been discussed before, Nicole can easily attend and cover Wisconsin games, so games that happen in Madison become bonus coverage. Much of the rest of what happens around the country is covered in her Weekend Wrap; I'm sure Yale's title will be noted there.
