Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

We were sloppy and uninspired in the first period, and we were fortunate to salvage 1 point in the standings.
As for the game, it felt like a tie.

Onto the next game, every one is important from here on out!

Overall, the Central New York road trip, led by ‘Gate, remains the toughest in ECAC Hockey:

54 points in 30 games - Colgate 30, Cornell 24;
51 pts. in 32 games - Dartmouth 29, Harvard 22;
49 pts. in 30 games - Quinnipiac 33, Princeton 16;
44 points in 30 games - Union 28, RPI 16;
42 pts. in 30 games - Clarkson 28, St. Lawrence 14;
33 points in 30 games - Brown 18, Yale 15.

I don't think we even had a shot on goal during the five minute major to start the third period. I'm actually rooting for Cornell tonight and maybe even Q-Pac.
I think you're correct that we didn't have a SOG during the five minute PP.
I can't imagine Iowa being happy with you saying "I'm actually rooting for Cornell tonight!"

Andrew Takacs led ‘Gate out onto the ice for tonight’s ECAC Hockey contest.
Noah Giesbrecht did the same for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

Colgate penalty (hooking). Killed.

RPI penalty (interference). Colgate 9-4 SOG going in. Killed.
Colgate penalty (hooking). 13 seconds left in RPI penalty. Killed.

Colgate 12, RPI 8, SOG after one.
Colgate 0, RPI 0, score after one.

RPI’s goalie wants that one back…
Ryan Sullivan from Robby Newton.

Seconds later, a beauty of a shot by Tommy Bergsland makes it 2-0. From Ryan Sullivan and Niko Rexine.

Colgate 30, RPI 20, SOG after two.
Colgate 2, RPI 0, score after two.

Who knew? Maybe putting pucks on the net is a good strategy.

Colgate penalty (slashing). Killed. 1 SOG for ‘Gate. 0 SOG for RPI.

RPI penalty (interference). PPG by Tommy Bergsland. From Brett Chorske and Max Nagel.

Colgate penalty (elbowing). ‘Gate 34-26 SOG going in. Killed. 35-27 SOG coming out.

RPI net empty with 4 minutes remaining.

Colgate timeout. 37-30 SOG. 3-0 score.
3:15 remaining in regulation.
2:33 remaining.

1:01 remaining. ENG for Owen Neuharth (from Brett Chorske).

Colgate 38, RPI 31, final SOG.
Colgate 4, RPI 0, final score.

Well, that was crazy… what is normally a 90-minute drive home on dry roads became a 2.5-hour affair in constant snowfall and snow-covered (unplowed) roads…

As for the RPI game, Colgate took care of business by winning the small battles from the first drop of the puck (unlike Friday’s first period).

And, as any CPA will tell you, once the calendar turns to January, it becomes Takacs season until mid-April. Another well-deserved shutout!

A blowout (4-goal differential) with an honest-to-goodness Power Play Goal. We’ll take it!

PairWise Ranking (PWR) tonight (with all games being final)?
15-Quinnipiac,
18-Colgate, 21-Dartmouth, 27-Clarkson, 32-Cornell.

ECAC Hockey point standings tonight (with all having played 16 games)?
34-Quinnipiac, 33-Colgate, 31-Union, 30-Clarkson, 29-Dartmouth.

Looking at remaining schedules for the current top six ECAC teams, the top spots are clearly up-for-grabs. Guaranteed three weeks of thrills and heartaches.

Quinnipiac , Colgate and Cornell play the same six teams (Yale, Brown, Clarkson, St. Lawrence, RPI, Union), with four of them on the road and only two at home. We each play two games against current top six teams in the league (Union and Clarkson), and four from the bottom six.

Dartmouth plays two games against the top six teams. They play four of the same teams as Q, C & C (Yale, Brown, Union and Clarkson), with the latter two being top six teams.

Both Union and Clarkson have tough schedules, with four games against top six teams (Quinnipiac, Colgate, Dartmouth, Cornell), and a game agains current number seven (Harvard).

Only two matchups of the top six teams next weekend: Quinnipiac @ Union, Dartmouth @ Clarkson. As a 'Gate fan, not sure which teams I'll root for in these two matchups. But I know I'll root for them to be well-played games.

I would say Union and Dartmouth.

Brown has been playing better lately. They’re beating Yale today. And Yale had already beaten us this year. We better be ready to go next weekend.

At 19 in the pairwise. When was the last time we were that low?

Bringing back my blowout stats, only because we seem to be picking things up in that department lately. I consider a blowout to have a goal differential of at least four.

Colgate Blow-Outs (For-Against) in the Class of 1965 Arena Era:

2024-25… (2-2)

Colgate 2, UConn 6.
Colgate 1, Penn State 7.
Colgate 6, Saint Lawrence 1.
RPI 0, Colgate 4.

2023-24… (3-0)
2022-23… (4-3)
2021-22… (3-4)
2020-21… (0-1)
2019-20… (2-1)
2018-19… (1-7)
2017-18… (3-3)
2016-17… (0-3)

Just noticed we are 9-2-2 at home this year. We are also 9-2-1 in our last dozen games going back to Cornell in December. Gotta avenge the loss to Yale this weekend !

Quasi, thanks for your analysis of the road to the ECAC Hockey playoffs, winding up in Lake Placid. I passed it on to my friend Clarkson Doug, a 45-year season ticket holder this year.

And Shabby, thanks for those truly impressive stats. Sometimes we get so caught up in the day-to-day action, we forget to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

I am off on an Amtrak USA Rail Pass adventure to Cali to log in two new AHL arenas.… Ontario tonight and Palm Springs on Saturday. But, I will be watching both Colgate games on ESPN+. Good-Luck and Good-Skill to the team and, as always, Go ‘Gate!

Honestly, if you want to feel good about YOUR team, go to ECAC Hockey’s Facebook page today. They have a post with ten current MIH top stats and Colgate is represented on ALL ten, even leading two… Team Goals (56) and, wait for it, Goalie Wins (Andrew Takacs, 10). Honorary mentions to Max Nagel, Tommy Bergsland, and Brett Chorske (2x).

Yale has only won twice at home all year - one of those was against BU at the end of December. I think BU had several players at the World Juniors then but it was a good win nonetheless.
Brown is 7-1 in their last 8.

We're 19th in the Pairwise going into this weekend's games. The only thing we can do to improve our ranking is to win both games in regulation.

Looking at other matchups, ideally we want:
  • Maine to sweep UNH (go Ross Mitton!)
  • BC to sweep UMass
  • UMass Lowell to sweep Northeastern (go Nick Anderson and Pierson Brandon! sorry, Ryan McGuire)
  • Notre Dame to sweep Penn State
Why do we want Penn State to lose even though we played them twice (losing both times)? Because they're close enough to us in the Pairwise that 2 Penn State losses will allow us to leapfrog them. Let's go!

Well, that was a tough way to lose. Yale should have been called for too many men about 30 seconds before scoring the game winner.

But we battled back from a 4-1 deficit to force OT, scoring an extra attacker goal with just under a minute to go in regulation, salvaging a point in the standings. We actually gained ground on both Union and Dartmouth in the race for that 1st-round bye.
