Colgate 2020-21

I feel like every year I make the Tim Taylor comparison. And I think as ever, it applies. Taylor by all accounts was an excellent developer of quality human beings. He was very well respected.

He also was in charge of a steadily mediocre hockey program for years.

Allain has done amazing things with that moribund program since then.

Something to ponder.

Ahem, they beat #11 in the nation Q-Pac, good win for them, and nothing to say from the naysayers ??

Will start by saying - again - that am glad the guys get to play and that they’ve chosen to do so at Colgate.
’Gate played a great weekend of hockey against an always-good team. Nice to be on the winning end of a one-goal game. This win was long-coming. Not sold on Gylander at all, but we’ve been presented with no other options in net, which is inexcusable. PK still hurts us.
We’re all 0-0 at tourney time, but Qpac’s success can’t be ignored. Neither can the terrible lack of winning from Colgate’s head coach. But by all means, continue to applaud his efforts, give him another contract extension for beating a ranked team, live with your head in the clouds, and be satisfied with less-than-mediocrity. Even a magical ECAC Title this year in a lame, 4-team league would not sway me.
The fact that players come to play here must have much more to do than with the school as a whole than winning, which certainly speaks well for Colgate.

yes, "Tim Taylor Disease"...through a good friend I have a pretty good idea how difficult it was for Yale to move on from a great guy and someone who moved Yale in the late 1970s from a terrible to a respected DI hockey program...the rift between AD Beckett and Taylor was never really mended...comparisons are apt: both DV and TT are/were good people who coached (and overall developed) quality young men and ran class programs...but you reach a point (long passed IMO) where, to repeat, the best interest of the program is to move in another direction...nobody's happy about this from a personal standpoint, but, again, the time has certainly arrived...

To change the subject, what do folks think about QU winning the Cleary Cup this season? It's obvious that the Bobcats were the best team (maybe Clarkson disagrees) in the "league." But what I'm getting at is, should the Cleary Cup even be presented this season? I mean four teams in a round robin "exhibition" season does not a Cleary Cup champion make, IMO. Maybe just naming QU the "regular season winner" would be more accurate? To my thinking you should not name any team the Cleary Cup Champion unless all the schools are participating. Again, not taking anything away from the Bobcats - they are in first place as the "season" ends. But awarding the Cleary Cup should be held back until the next full schedule is played out. Anyone agree with me, or am I alone??

would definitely agree...but we live in a culture of "everybody gets a trophy"...I'm grateful that my alma mater (and a few other programs in the ECAC) elected to play this year, but with an abbreviated schedule and only four competing squads? Frankly, it cheapens the award a little...and I don't think Q-Pac would mind that much...they want a national championship period...good for them

The women played a great game and had a great season, so winning their first ECAC Championship is their reward. Should they not be the ECAC Champions in this pandemic season - like Quinnipiac not being named the Cleary Cup champions? They should be Champions. The respective programs earned their titles. I can only assume that participating in and coaching in this crazy environment must have been a nightmare! Coping with all of the pandemic protocols every day and never knowing if your next game will be cancelled must have been horrendous. Practices with a few players and slowly adding more until the whole team could participate - unbelievable. At the end of the day, huge congratulations to the four schools who participated this year. It must have been a herculean task, in personnel and money, to make the seasons happen. Shame on the Ivies and RPI/Union for failing to provide this experience for their student/athletes. Go 'gate!!

I see your point but don't agree (and not because I'm a Bobcat fan). The Cleary Cup goes to the regular season champ. Four teams or 12 shouldn't matter. All teams have to play the schedules they're given, and the ECAC did the best they could with the hand they were dealt.

What about league awards? Do you think they shouldn't be awarded because there were only 4 teams? Those teams that did play still put in the effort and made the sacrifices to make it a season. The kids played their hearts out and should be recognized IMHO.

I guess I'm alone. That's OK. I floated the question to see what everyone thinks. This is a democracy. Let the freedom of ideas ring, as they say.

BTW, a BIG CONGRATS to the WIH team winning the ECAC title today. Great year...and more to come! My dream is to live long enough to see the ECAC banner raised at the '65 Arena for the MIH program winning the championship. Will that ever happen?

Good luck to the women vs Minny-Duluth. Should be an exciting game and must watch TV - if ESPN+ carries the match. Who knew Bob Morris had such a great womens team?

Are your feelings towards the Whitelaw Cup the same as the Cleary? If 'Gate runs the table next week will it be the same as if they went through 11 other teams to get there?

Yes, my feelings are the same for the Whitelaw Cup as they are for the Cleary. This season was an anomaly. No "Cups" or "Awards" should be given. Perhaps an asterisk next to the "NCAA Champions" tag would be appropriate.

Will never happen for the men in our lifetime, but my money is on the women's team! Dream of the day Colgate will win a national title in ANY sport.

Strange to stop the season with no reason for Clarkson, betters our chance to get in the finals.

Shabby, totally agree. The assumption is that 'Covid protocols' are the reason for Clarkson's withdrawal, but that hasn't been confirmed yet.
With Saint Lawrence's exciting resurgence, the upcoming game should be a real barn-burner. We are pretty evenly matched this season.

On Monday, I bought two tickets to the NCAA Regional in Albany, N.Y. I still haven't heard anything on Frozen Four tickets for Pittsburgh, Penna., other than they plan to adhere to the 15% venue capacity limit (which would be 2,800 people). Time is ticking down, though.

CHN says most players from Clarkson's team went to a party last weekend breaking covid protocol.
