Re: Colgate 2014-15
Penalty trouble in the 1st period, coupled with TWO fundamental mistakes in the 3rd period, is what cost us the game last night. If you look at the box score from last night, it says Providence was 2 for 5 on the power play. But they were 2 for 3 in the 1st period alone. Their 4th power play opportunity was cut short because they took a penalty, and their 5th power play opportunity lasted the final 2 seconds of the game. If we gave other teams a blueprint as to how to beat us, we did it last night by marching to the sin bin. On PC's first goal, they had over a minute of attacking zone time. Our players were a bit gassed.
In the 3rd period, PC's 3rd goal was the result of Daniel Gentzler skating to the bench when PC was clearing the puck from their own end. He may have thought they were going to just dump it in and change lines, but instead it resulted in a 2-on-1. Gentzler saw it, and rushed back into our defensive zone as Finn made the initial save. But the rebound came back to Gentzler and deflected off of him and into the net. Then the game-winning goal. Turnover in our own defensive zone. Something that torched us regularly in 2010-11.
But on the positive side of things, we got a shot in the arm offensively with Tylor Spink and Darcy Murphy back in the lineup. Tylor assisted on the 1st goal of the same (which Tyson scored, and that shot was a laser from outside the left face-off circle that remarkably found the back of the net). Darcy, meanwhile, appeared to have tied the game at 2-2 in the 2nd period, only to have it taken away from him. But he scored in the 3rd to tie the game at 3-3, so that should at least boost his confidence.
I thought we would win at least one of the games against BU and Providence. Unfortunately, we lost both, and we will probably have to go on some sort of run in order to make the NCAA's. That said, no team is a lock right now, but there's still a lot of hockey left to be played. Last year, the two games out in Minnesota jump-started our season. Perhaps the next two games in Pittsburgh can do the same?
