Colgate 2014-15

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Some thoughts (not deep): My video was not good in the first period; players were "jumpy" on the screen and picture hard to watch. Then the last 2 periods it cleared up. Anyone else have this problem? Announcers were OK but by the end of the game I was tiring of Sonny. Thought they gave our team and DV some good props though.

This seemed to be a game of many games. First period, all PIM by us, we were constantly clogged up in our end by the PC forechecking, seemed like we just couldn't get started (what else is new?). Second period we woke up and had several PP opportunities we couldn't cash in on. I may be alone on this, but I seriously didn't think Gilles was interfered with on that Murphy non-goal. The replay showed he might have been "tapped" by one of our guys who was pushed into his skate as he went by. But is this actual interference? Looked very iffy to me.

Third period seemed pretty even to me, with mistakes on both sides. DV said the ice was chippy and slushy toward the end of the 3rd and that may have been the reason for Spink's drop pass that resulted in the PC goal. At times we were pressuring them pretty good, then PC would come back and apply the pressure to us. Kind of an even period to me, even though PC capitalized on more opportunities.

I guess this BU-PC set is equivalent to our "UMASS" weekend from last year. But remember what happened after that disaster? There is still time to make a run. Remember what position Yale and Union were in the last two years at this time when they won the NC. There is a lot of hockey to be played, we just need to buckle down in the second half and hope the addition of Tylor will spark our offense and that some of the frosh are getting more acclimated to the college game and can contribute even more.

The interference call was pretty blatant. The Colgate player made contact with Gillies on the first move and when the puck went out to the goal scorer Gillies was out of position due to the contact. Hockey East refs tend to be very tough on any contact with the goalie and waving stuff off!

It looked to me like Gillies was brushed and he tried to spin around to his left in a circle to get back to the play on the other side of the net. Then he caught an edge or something and fell trying to move to the other side. He certainly wasn't hit very hard but he was touched. I could see it going either way.

I find it amusing how a Friar fan and a Gate fan see the differences slanting to your perspective team.

Wondering why the ice was slushy in the third period? Maybe Leaman pulled a Ned Harkness, turned the compressors off in the third period? That puck sure stopped halfway to Kulevich on the winning goal by Mingoia.

Blatant? If anything one of the Friars pushed our player toward the goal, and maybe his blade/boot slightly "tapped" Gillies but it certainly wasn't blatant. "Gillies was out of position" you say? Almost all goalies are out of position when goals are scored. It's incumbent on the goalie to be in position for 60 minutes so goals aren't allowed. I would say Gillies just did not get over fast enough to prevent Murphy from scoring. Nothing was impeding him; it certainly wasn't because of some so-called "contact." It's on Gillies, IMHO.

I didn't see the play but was the contact inside or outside the blue paint? It makes a great deal of difference, and if if was outside was the contact accidential or intentional

I would say the contact was accidental, since he either unintentially slid or was pushed toward the goalie by the PC player. Don't remember if Gillies was outside the blue paint or not. His blade may have been.

Bump

Personally I did not think the "contact" was even close enough to prevent Gillies from making the next save as he was out of position by his own accord not the contact. Too see it overturned after it was counted as a goal was disappointing but as the other poster said HE refs normally make that call then I guess I'm not to surprised. I also recall now the announcers saying PC had a few goals turned over this year with goalie contact. Great to have Spink back but ironically it might have benefited us if he sat out just one more game lol. Let's hope to win the Pittsburgh tourney and step it up into the new year.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Two weeks from today to rest up and get healthier, with our top line back we should start making noise again. Panowyk has been impressive helping to fill the void left by Spink and his faceoff percentage alleviates some of the missed Borkowski faceoff wins. We are in much better shape than last year at this time. Sixteen ECAC games left with two games in hand on most, if we win the two in hand, eleven points would be one point out of first. I think we'll be fine.

Good points Shabby. Was looking at Bob Morris' record. They are doing real well and in first place in the AHA I believe. Thought if we played them it wouldn't be so tough; now I'm having second thoughts. No easy teams in the upcoming tourney. Penn State has put together a good program in a few short years; they are no easy out. Will be a tough time in Pittsburgh. BTW, any insights on how Borkowski's coming along?

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Interesting scheduling information for next year; according to "CAC Newsletter" on the Colgate website, we will start playing Arizona State next year with a home and home contract. It doesnt say which year is home or away but it is an interesting tidbit.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Borkowski is skating at practice - but he is a long way from playing. Probably not this season. I don't think he has made a decision whether to redshirt or graduate with his class. I've been told there is interest from some NHL teams; that may have a lot to do with his decision. Happy Holidays everybody.

"Say it isn't so" as Hall & Oats once sang....:(

Season's Greetings to all posters.

It was announced last month that Borkowski would be out for the remainder of the season. Here is the article on the Colgate web site.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Merry Christmas to all the Colgate hockey fans who post or lurk here. I sure hope Santa left us the same present we got last year.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

If we have a bad tournament in the Steel City we could fall out of the USCHO top 20. With Bob Morris at #19 and PSU at #20 two losses could have us out...not that rankings mean anything. Union and Yale are nipping at our heels with 61 and 56 points among "teams also receiving votes." QU has now jumped us at #14; the improbable Crimson are at #4. We gotta get the second half off to a good start :)

Happy New Year!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I hope they're being streamed. NCHC has their own channel but only shows the Championship game being streamed.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The season resumes today! Sadly, there is no live video for the next two games, but this tournament can serve as a springboard for the remainder of the season, just like last year's success out in Minnesota.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I agree rain, a well rested Spink healthy team, let's start out on the right foot. Go Raiders !
