Re: Colgate 2014-15

Much happier today, I knew when (if) we got Tylor back we'd be back to where we thought we'd be at this time. If Borokowski were healthy, oh well, not going there.

Tylor was 15-21 on the faceoffs last night, I thought that line just dominated. Secondary scoring there, not just the Cornwall line, six goalscorers very balanced. Is big Kulevich turning into a star player, all tourney team ?

We are back under the radar now, everything is Harvard, I like it almost. The next three months will be something. Finn was unreal both games, too bad he didn't get his fourth shutout of the year.

Congrats to Charlie Finn tourney MVP, also Baun and big K for making the tourney first team!

Totally unconnected last night. No radio, TV or computer (hamsters were on strike). 4-1, 6-1....it's still a W. Looking forward to the rest of the season now that we have "some" health issues solved. Imagine if Borkowski were in the lineup.. :)

It's great to have won that tournament. Getting 6 goals from 6 different players is awesome; hope that type of offense continues. Finn seems to be playing heads up; just hope he's able to do that for the balance of the schedule. Should be quite a second half.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Happy New Year everyone!

Huge, great photo of 'Gate on the CHN homepage. Good for recruiting.

Has anyone noticed the national TV schedule for college hockey? Seems to me the ECAC is getting the shaft, especially after we had the last two national champions. Union-BU is featured on 1/3 but I believe only Dartmouth and Brown  are scheduled to air the rest of the season. Very odd that there aren't more games, especially Yale, QU and/or RPI or Clarkson/SLU..and us! Since we were picked to win the league this year, why not any national telecasts???

Much as I hate to say it, it probably reflects market realities. All things being equal they are going to be attracted to big schools with large alumni bases. Being in or near a major city wouldn't hurt either, so if Harvard stays strong I fully expect them to get lots of love in future. A league TV deal is the best way to get us out there, but given that we've had trouble even negotiating TV rights for the conference championship, it's probably just the cold equations don't allow it.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Happy New Year Colgate & Co.

Thoughts on the tourney, very happy with contributions from so many and fewer penalties. Just asking but Robert Morris has a SOS of 58 of 59 teams...perhaps their record was misleading and this was a game we should have had an edge? WMU has a SOS of 22 and has tremendous size; the win carried more weight for me. Neither win did much for our PWR but a loss would have hurt and we have half the season left to see how our 2 wins will pan out.

Clarkson and SLU will be a very tough New Year test and I don't know what to expect. All 3 of us are inconsistent but I admire Clarkson's defense and SLUs goaltending. Winning at Appleton is never easy for Colgate.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Union looked pretty sharp last night in their tie with BU. They are going to be a tough out for us, especially 1/17 in their barn.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

According to CHN Lefevre has stepped down for a "private sector job". First, congratulations to Jason on his new job whatever it may be.

Secondly, this is a little concerning, as we have lost two assistant coaches in one year (and in a year with high expectations when you wouldn't expect people to leave).

Is this concerning to anyone else?

Re: Colgate 2014-15

It's on the front page here also. It doesn't really concern me, I think Don will be head coach as long as he wants. I think he loves what he does and will be around for quite awhile. Jason is young(mid 30's I think), probably got an offer he couldn't refuse, all about money. I think I heard he's getting married also.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Long term, with a good replacement this doesn't concern me so much. But short term, with the club we were supposed to have this season, it is a bit disconcerting. I'm sure Jason had a big impact on Finn, and I wonder how he will react to this news going forward. Changing the coaching staff in the middle of a potential NCAA-appearance season seems a little odd, despite the marriage news and maybe a good paying job elsewhere. If Jason bleeds maroon as much as we've heard over the years, would he want to put a damper on the team's success, just when we're peaking? Are there major differences of opinion on how the program is being handled? Maybe I'm just seeing the glass half empty instead of half full

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Union looked pretty sharp last night in their tie with BU. They are going to be a tough out for us, especially 1/17 in their barn.

The Dutchmen have 4 of the top 10 point scorers in the league at No. 1, 2, 4 & 7, three of the top 5 league scorers on the power play, two of the top 4 in SH points, 2 of the top 5 freshman in scoring, #2 in offense at 3.37gpg and have scored the most goals in the league (64). Their weaknesses appear to be on the PK and GAA. They will be tough to beat home or away. This is the 4th year they have had a strong team whereas others in the league have more drastic peaks and valleys. Amazing that we stole 3 points last year. Union is not quite as good this year...and not sure yet if we are, either! Even RPI put up a fight with Miami on Friday night with a very short bench. No such thing as an easy game...we almost lost to Brown.

Clarkson will stymie us. Hope Spink is back to full form and we get the W. Past success at Cheel doesn't guarantee anything and they're hungry! Time to show the league and the nation 'Gate means business!!!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Hopefully there is nothing lurking below the surface of this announcement. Agree that it is highly unusual for a coach to leave mid-season, especially one with the ties to 'Gate that Jason has.

If he left for a "private sector job" it was probably an offer he couldn't refuse, and a job that wouldn't still be there at the end of the hockey season. It may hurt a little, but at least it isn't the head coach leaving in the middle of a season.
Time for 'gate to get down to business and make a good run through the league the rest of the way. Seems to me the league is better than the experts thought at the beginning of the season. A lot of pretty good teams right now, and that's good to see.
We've got a bunch of games in hand on most of the league - time to take advantage of them. Hoping for 2 wins, or a win and a tie this weekend - but I'd be happy with a split. This a tough 2 road games.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Nothing but league games from here on out. The March to a Championship begins this Friday.

Fortunately, we've had success in each of our last 2 trips to the North Country. Clarkson is a surprising 4-1-2 in league play so far, with their one loss coming at Cornell, in overtime, on a shorthanded goal. Call them an in-conference lion, out-of-conference lamb if you must. St. Lawrence was a more consistent team when we beat them back in November, but this game is at Appleton, a place we've historically struggled at (though we did break the curse last year). The next two games are winnable, but we will need to put in a full 60-minute effort.

If we split the next two weekends, it wouldn't be a cause for concern, but we would need to take care of business at home. If we can get at least 5 points over the next 4 games, we should be in good shape.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I am just hoping to keep L's off of the score sheet. Ties won't help us in the league but they won't kill the pairwise rankings either.

If you want to look at the league standings, we are only 1 point out of first place if we win the games in hand (difficult but it is in our hands).

I'm excited to finally have the second half start and fairly healthy (outside of borkowski)

Clarkson's wins are against Brown, Princeton, SLU, #14 Qpac (2-1)...ties against Yale & Colgate. We have to get the puck past the blue line and shoot it like mad. The Knights are a defense-first team and their goalie stymied us at Starr. We were lucky for the point.

I hope our improved 2nd period performance of late continues. We have only recently won at Appleton and hope that hex of a barn is over! I had a very hard time picking 'Gate to sweep this w/e. For consistency, we need to sweep these middle-of-the-pack teams and make a statement in the league. The Dartmouth/Harvard road trip will be the true test for us IMO. Positioning will come down to H2H comparisons. We already have one ugly loss to Qpac but have Union, Harvard, Yale x2. We won the Three Rivers Tournament but didn't budge in the PWR; shows what weaker competition may get you but a great tourney win just the same.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Prognosticating the PWR - January 8, 2015

So we're at that point in the season where every team has played a sufficient amount of games, and as such, the Pairwise Rankings are starting to stabilize. Colgate is currently 18th, on the outside looking in right now. But keep in mind that we were 23rd at this time last year. There are still a lot of games to be played. But we have no wins against any teams that are in the top 20 of the RPI right now, and as such, we have no RPI bonus like we had last year. Additionally, both St. Cloud and Northeastern have been underachieving, which pulls down our strength of schedule. Right now, the losses to both BU and Providence are looking like missed opportunities.

The next 3 games (against Clarkson, SLU, and RPI) won't give us much of an RPI boost, but losses here will hurt us. Right now, the two games against Harvard are HUGE as far as PWR implications go. Any wins from our OOC opponents this year will also help us. As far as this weekend goes, these are the most favorable results for Colgate:

Friday
-Colgate beats Clarkson
-RPI beats Quinnipiac
-Northeastern beats Boston College
-St. Cloud beats Miami
-Robert Morris beats Bentley
-Boston University beats Wisconsin

Saturday
-Colgate beats St. Lawrence
-Union beats Quinnipiac
-Harvard beats Yale
-Northeastern beats Boston College
-St. Cloud beats Miami
-Robert Morris beats Bentley
-Boston University beats Wisconsin
-Western Michigan beats Notre Dame

Its VERY unlikely that all of these results will go our favor, but if we win our two games this weekend, it will go a long way.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

LOL Rain, you're more bored than I am. I miss the games, these two months are a killer. I am even considering going up north to Canton or Potsdam this weekend, as it's only a two hour drive for me. Both games are being streamed so if we're getting lake effect I'll stay home.

I definitely am going to either Union or RPI for one next weekend, also two hours down the thruway.

I'm not bored, I just want to see this team live up to expectations. If you're going to go to a game next weekend, definitely go to Union. Last time I checked, RPI has a free video stream, where Union does not. I'm also considering making the drive to Schenectady next weekend. Hopefully the weather cooperates.
