Re: Colgate 2014-15

Dropped down one spot to 14th. So it will be #14 v #18 in providence. As for the tuesday date I wonder if DV wanted to cut down on the mid season break as much as possible. If you remember last year he appeared to schedule weird games (only one Cornell game) to avoid a long layoff

Wasn't it two years ago that we had that long holiday layoff and then went into a tailspin the rest of the season? Or was that last year? (...gettin' old :( That 2-game set with UMASS is still in my brain; what a nightmare! We should not schedule games around exam time.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Huge game for PWR implicatiuons Tuesday.
OK, so we are officially allowed to discuss the PWR now ;) I'm in!

This time last year, Colgate was 7-9-2 and was 2-4-1 against ranked teams. We came back like a lion in January and need to do the same this season. Otherwise, I fear our season is done if we don't sweep the playoffs. Hope Spink is recovering but speculating about him every week is getting us nowhere. When was the last time Colgate was nationally ranked for the entire first half of the season? Certainly hard to find fault with that.

Harvard making a great statement. It should have been Colgate's to make this year.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

In order to contend, I think the team needs more grit. Obviously a few skilled, speedy guys are hurt right now.
But just in general, some size/grit would help.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Greetings from Providence. I drove 70 miles through a Nor'easter (no snow, just a lot of rain) to get here. I can confirm that both Darcy Murphy & Tylor Spink are on the ice for warmups. Let's go 'Gate!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Welcome back, Tylor.
Something about HE teams that just feels different; we look like boys among men, and are acting like it. If we came to play sin bin hockey then I want a refund. Prov is a great forechecking team and we have our hands full. The ominous 2nd period awaits.
Video feed is great, btw.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Completely gave that game away, extremely disappointing lose. Right now I would be stunned to see this team make the ncaas, just can't seem to beat the good teams. This is a middle tier ecac team.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

That loss is troubling, you almost have to run through the league at this point to make it in the pwr and it gets to fester for 3 weeks.

As bad as it is to say, this team just needs to try to make it to the NCAA, at the beginning of the season there was a lot of talk. This can still be productive, but the focus is not to be a #1 seed anymore, it is to make the tournament. I still think that if we get in we will have a better than average shot at doing something special, they just need to make it.

Very glad to see Tylor back. Always great to watch Darcy Murphy. Thought it was going to be a long night after the 1st period. Missed chances on the man advantage in the second, but we started to come alive and a good third period, albeit the "give away"......Sad about the loss, but happy to see the team come together and play like we all know they can. Safe trip home. Go 'Gate. BTW, I thought the broadcast, both camera and play-by-play was very well done!!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

PC pressure and 29 blocked shots won the game.
Colgate was as good as any team I have seen all year. They will be fine. Colgate vs Harvard in ECAC finals

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Penalty trouble in the 1st period, coupled with TWO fundamental mistakes in the 3rd period, is what cost us the game last night. If you look at the box score from last night, it says Providence was 2 for 5 on the power play. But they were 2 for 3 in the 1st period alone. Their 4th power play opportunity was cut short because they took a penalty, and their 5th power play opportunity lasted the final 2 seconds of the game. If we gave other teams a blueprint as to how to beat us, we did it last night by marching to the sin bin. On PC's first goal, they had over a minute of attacking zone time. Our players were a bit gassed.

In the 3rd period, PC's 3rd goal was the result of Daniel Gentzler skating to the bench when PC was clearing the puck from their own end. He may have thought they were going to just dump it in and change lines, but instead it resulted in a 2-on-1. Gentzler saw it, and rushed back into our defensive zone as Finn made the initial save. But the rebound came back to Gentzler and deflected off of him and into the net. Then the game-winning goal. Turnover in our own defensive zone. Something that torched us regularly in 2010-11.

But on the positive side of things, we got a shot in the arm offensively with Tylor Spink and Darcy Murphy back in the lineup. Tylor assisted on the 1st goal of the same (which Tyson scored, and that shot was a laser from outside the left face-off circle that remarkably found the back of the net). Darcy, meanwhile, appeared to have tied the game at 2-2 in the 2nd period, only to have it taken away from him. But he scored in the 3rd to tie the game at 3-3, so that should at least boost his confidence.

I thought we would win at least one of the games against BU and Providence. Unfortunately, we lost both, and we will probably have to go on some sort of run in order to make the NCAA's. That said, no team is a lock right now, but there's still a lot of hockey left to be played. Last year, the two games out in Minnesota jump-started our season. Perhaps the next two games in Pittsburgh can do the same?

Re: Colgate 2014-15

BTW, the march to the sin bin was due to a terribly officiated game and this is coming from a PC fan...embarrassing performance

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Great to see Tylor back, from the audio he sounds a little rusty - couple of missed opportunities on re-directs.
Good to see a strong first half of the third period, but now our penalty kill is looking more normal than really good.
I don't know about the goaltending. I wasn't there to see it. But it was probably OK, Providence is pretty darn good.

We've got to get our special teams back on track and stay out of the box. We do that and I see a good second half coming.
Don't give up the ship just yet - we're still as good as anybody in our league, and there's some pretty good teams in the ECAC.

Hope Panowyk's injury isn't much - he's got a couple of weeks to recover.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Another tough game to watch last night, at least the stream was very good and so were the announcers. They also showed replays. So happy to see Spink back, he assisted on the first goal. He may have been a little rusty but the Spink Baun Spink line showed dominance at times, the cycling was fantastic.

As good as we looked at times(the Friars announcers said it looked like we were on the PP) we looked equally bad on several occaisons. We gave up TWO shorthanded breakaways(Finn stopped both) and Spink gave the puck away twice, the last one cost us the game winning goal. In fairness to him the puck just stopped on drop passes and the Friars were there to retrieve it. Misteaks and the two powerplay goals beat us. Seemed like we got no breaks and Prov capitalized on their few chances. I'm not so sure Murphy's disallowed goal was bad either, he did score the tying goal later in the third.

We've got almost three weeks to get healthier before the Xmas tourney, I still think that we will be fine. We are a different team with Spink back, hey, last year at this time we were 7-9-2. Keep the faith.

On a sidenote, the Hockey East officials were pathetic, just as bad as the ECAC zebras. They seem to think the game is about them, what a travesty.

I didn't see Panowyk get hurt, are you maybe referring to when he broke his blade and couldn't get off the ice ? He was playing with five minutes left.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I didn't see the game live but saw some highlights on the providence website and it looked like Finn made some incredible saves per usual. The only one he probably wants back is the dirty goal in close by the net off what looked like a rebound.

As far as the last turnover and goal, I think that is some rust on tylor's part and not thinking it through (very tough lesson). But it sounds like most people are happy with the way they played. (Minus the penalties). The team is going through a rough patch right now, but If they come out of the break hot it can still be a season to remember. I will bet you that we will all forget this 3 game losing streak of they put 5-6 in a row.

We are tied for 20th in the PWR so clearly within striking distance so although It is getting us nervous we shouldn't panic.
