Re: Colgate 2011-12

Nice

Had the radio on the background, sounded like we controlled the whole game. Love to see that

Congrats to Mihalik on the goose-egg, and a big win against one of the conference's early leaders. Can't believe we didn't pick up ECAC win #2 last year until mid-February (right after win #1, but I think we've relived that enough)

Harvard is definitely vulnerable, let's get that road sweep!

Re: Colgate 2011-12

With Miami beating Michigan (Now a TUC) we are now the highest ranked ECAC team in the PWR, thirteenth.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Some early surprises...Colgate/Clarkson/Brown...and lackluster RPI heading in opposite directions. What a difference a summer makes. Great win on the road in a tough barn. Here's to consistency in Beantown...
Stayed disciplined, late pp goal...when 'D' was suspect, Mihalik stood on his head. Great mix of scoring from all lines. No meltdown in the 3rd. #302 or bust!
Go 'Gate!
Beat Harvard!

Re: Colgate 2011-12

quality win on the road...great to see contributions from, in particular, third and fourth lines...let's get the sweep tonight boys

Re: Colgate 2011-12

This was on the INCH website prior to last nights game. Very little respect for the team prior to last night.

Colgate at Dartmouth (Friday): Based on early results and strong starts by goaltender James Mello and forward Dustin Walsh, Dartmouth appears to be a legitimate threat to join Union and Yale as ECAC Hockey favorites. Colgate, on the strength of a fairly potent offense led by senior forward Austin Smith, has shown the potential to contend for an upper-division league finish. Goaltending could be a concern, however; No. 1 Erik Mihalak has a .880 save percentage and a 3.31 goals against average, although he’s been much better against conference foes.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Holy smokes! Wasn't able to tune in. Big congrats to 'Gate on a huge win on the road. (And to think I picked the Big Green for first place in the "Pick the Standings" contest :( Wonder if I can change my mind at this late date?)

Good to see Mike McCann contribute to the scoring. Great input by the entire team.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Since the rest of you were apparently too lazy to check out beautiful downtown Hanover last night, some game notes:

It has been a long time (if I ever have) since I have seen a Colgate team so calm, collected and confident. Passes were tape to tape with very few miscues or puck's bouncing over sticks. The team played great defense throughout, seemed to win the puck battles constantly, I can remember very few give-aways and a ton of take aways - many created out of nothing - Colgate player just reached in from out of nowhere and stole the puck.

Smith obviously has the green light on the penalty kill. Two big time and dangerous (to Dartmouth) rushes while we were short. They were planned and executed plays, not the opportunistic kind. That boy has a big shot - a few that went just a bit wide absolutely boomed off the backboards. Speaking of that -

McCann-on! The first goal was an absolute blast - think the only one in the building that saw it coming was the twine and it was trying to run away screaming.

Colgate was really in control the whole game. When Dartmouth did start to make some noise early in the third, the team showed it could scramble smart and they really kept their composure. Instead of giving up a back breaking tie-it up goal, the team stayed focused leading to Wagner absolutely slipping a knife into the Big Green's hopes. Totally different Colgate team when that is shortly followed thirty seconds later by a "stick a fork in them" goal by Prockow. Start to finish this was an ice-water in their veins effort by the boys that was truly fun to watch.

And that is a good, big, fast Dartmouth team. #17 was a great skater. Gate did an excellent job not letting Dartmouth use that size against us.

Shot counts are pretty misleading this game. Most of both teams most dangerous chances either slipped just harmlessly through an open crease (Dartmouth) or tipped just wide or high (Colgate). Post saved Mihalik's shut-out mid third but then he earned it with a great right pad save and a couple other well executed blocks. Controlled most of the rebounds quite well I thought. He doesn't seem to pop back up quite as quickly as I would like. From a fan's standpoint it can cause some heart-stopping moments and the aforementioned puck's floating through open creases. But, I would have to admit that the fact that no Dartmouth player was there to capitalize on those opportunities (I think there were about three or four) seemed to tilt more toward design than luck. Colgate seemed to keep Dartmouth out of the crease pretty consistently.

Overall, that was a throttling of a very good team. If Colgate can play like that consistently, this could be a very special season. Wish I could make it down to Boston for tonight but no such luck.

Go Gate!

Yes! What a huge moment in the game. 2 huge goals right in a row really put this one away in the 3rd

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Where do you find the replay of the goals ? Clicked on it and it just brings you to the mens hockey site ??

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Another split. Well, last season we didn't get splits on the road so I guess we have to look on the bright side. Two major penalties in the second period will do that to a team :(

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Frankly, very disappointing...defensive effort was terrible, almost as bad as the refereeing in the second period...my guess is that all of the so-called "officials" thought they were at the women's Harvard-Colgate hockey game...nonetheless, you can see what losing Larkin (hopefully not long) means to this team and why he was a plus player last year with a teams 17 games below .500. Once again, Smith is all over the ice...this is the third weekend in a row that they seem to lose their legs in game #2...I'd also frankly like to see the frosh forwards become a little more visible on the ice...I know they're young...all in all, 2-2 on two tough road trips certainly isn't bad,but one is left wanting a little more...

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Just got back. Taking back-to-back 5 minute major penalties took the wind out of our sails :(

But Austin Smith picked up goal #10 and assisted on Bourdon's goal (a real beauty, Robbie had the puck on his blade and nothing but net to shoot at). 2-2 on the road to start league play isn't anything terrible to complain about, but losing a game after a big win just doesn't make you feel good. Especially when the loss is on Sat. and the team has to bus it back to Hamilton that same night.

6 of our next 7 are at Starr Rink, including a big OOC contest against Merrimack. IF we can take care of business on our home ice (we're 1-2 at Starr so far, and haven't really been dominant at home lately), then this could springboard us onto a winning streak.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Not blaming the refs in this one. What a train wreck after a solid performance against the Big Green. Our only consistent aspect of the game was our lack of discipline. We're on a see-saw in the PWR yet again...but at least we're on it this season.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Greencoat. This is an exceptionally tough league to step into as a freshman and make an immediate impact, unless there is a large frosh class. The frosh are doing a very good job on this team in the roles they are plugged in to. With Larkin and Bartliif in this lineup there is a much older feel to the lineup and that would have been really helpful last night especially after Prockow got bounced. The minutes that Smith and Wagner logged last night was bordering on insanity IMO.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Gaterrooter, would agree that on back-to-back games Smith and Wagner are going to be gassed by the middle of game #2...don't know what's up with Larkin as info on all lineup absences is guarded like a state secret, but, yes, we need Larkin and Bartliff back (badly)...the offensive numbers tell the story: the last three Friday nights we've scored 16 goals, the last three Saturday nights, 3 goals...give Harvard credit...they were missing two top forwards and Biega was tossed in middle of game...I may be missing something but the 5-minute call on Prockow was puzzling...is there a specific rule about grabbing the facemask of an opponent and, assuming there is, is intent involved??? Bottom Line: the refs have had better nights...IF we can regain some of the home ice advantage 'Gate teams used to have, going 2-2 on the two longest road trips of the year isn't bad...3-1 in next four home ECAC games is quite important...

Re: Colgate 2011-12

I think face mask is auto eject, they seem to be calling alot this year.
The refs did miss this one. Photo shows on front page they both should of received the same call

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Also, it should be noted that Prockow was given a game disqualification, NOT a game misconduct. So he'll sit the Quinnipiac game this Friday night. Not real good for us roster-wise, since Bartliff and Rivellini are out with injuries and Larkin is over in Italy playing for his home country in the 2011 Euro ice hockey challenge.

We just gotta win at home. We're due for a W against the Bobcats.

Gate Radio reported Larkin is in Europe playing on some (I think) internationaL (maybe Italian) team. Definitely this is a different team with Bartliff and Larkin out. Agree that Smth/Wagner will be burned out by mid-season if they have to carry the majority of the load. Can't afford to be undisciplined in these games; 5x3's always spell disaster for us - we can't take 5 minute majors in league games. Harvard was stung by Cornell Friday night (and winless) - they took it out on us, so we have to get back at them in our barn. Just need to suck it up, forget what happened, & reload for Silver Puck w/e.

Facemask is 15 yard penalty in my book :)
