Re: Colgate 2010-11

-1 for our last 20 or so power-play opportunities isn't going to cut it. Yes, NEGATIVE one. Why? We allowed a shorthanded goal while not scoring a PPG. That is the ultimate sin in hockey. Seriously now, a two-on-none when we're a man up????? I hope this was the nadir of whatever funk we're in right now.

Also giving Brown TWO 5x3 opportunities in the same game? Unacceptable. That's giving them two golden opportunities to score and they cashed in on them. Goaltending is not a problem as the first 3 Brown goals were the result of a lack of discipline or (in the case of the 3rd goal) horrendous special teams. Keep in mind Evin did stop a penalty shot in the 2nd.

Are all these misfortunes the result of a curse? Is it the coaching? Is it Starr Rink? Is it the month of November??? I'm starting to think the leadership of McIntyre and Cox last year were what fueled the team. Where are Day and Smith??? They had a 2-on-1 while we were shorthanded and completely just follow through. It should be noted that our 2007-08 freshmen class (Day, Brisebois, Poplawski, and McNamara) all have either a "C" or an "A" on their uniforms. Is there ANY senior leadership on this team? I think I read somewhere that good college teams win with their seniors...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

couldn't agree more Rainman...Brown's PP was far superior - good puck movement, defensemen creating their own shooting lanes, and NO pressure on the points from Colgate. We continue to have virtually ZERO presence in front of the net and manyof our forwards might want to call Cox or Williams and find out how to play in your own end. Frankly, this team looks like it was put together 12 hours before each game. I don't like ripping the kids (in many cases they are simply trying to do too much on their own), but, again when your talent is mediocre (team speed is average at best, goal scoring skills are limited to a few) some form of INTENSE TEAM COMMITMENT would appear a must. Tonight's game? I feel like it's the 1980 Olympics and we're the USA...for those of you who haven't see Yale play I think yo'u're in for a treat - 60 minutes of hell on wheels - with speed, speed, speed from guys who are mostly 5'9" or 5'10" tall and weigh 170 pounds. God I hope its gets better - I've love to admit I've overreacted and was dead wrong in my posts...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I was going to bite my tongue(again) but it's bleeding profusely already. Where do I start ?

We have reached an low I haven't seen since Ron Ryan's 5-26 team in I guess the 70's. With basically the same team as last year and a year of experience under their belts, I don't get it.

We are now one for twentynine on the PP in league games. Nine penalties last night, first two goals two men down. We gave up a shorthanded goal also ! Two two on ones and we didn't even get a shot off. Brown did move the puck very well on their PP though, they are a decent team.

The attendance was UNDER a thousand and the student section was about 20% full maybe. I guess most of them went home for Thanksgiving already. Can't wait to see tonight's game...OMGGGG !

Wagner and Michalik were suspended for disciplinary reasons, not sure why. What is happening ?

With our "joke" of a rink, attendances of under 1000 people, how can we get players to come here ? Don somehow has "overachieved" over the last few years but if something isn't done soon we're in deep doo doo, sad.

Talking to the dad of a very promising recruit, whose son decided to go to RPI this week. He was very interested in coming to "Gate" to play with his buddy Wilson who's coming here next year. Father told me after his son was invited to an "oncampus invite" and Colgate no longer pursued him(no invite) he felt like we weren't interested anymore hence decided on RPI.

I hate being so negative but I feel that we are "spiralling" downward.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

very interesting Shabby...BTW, is Jack McNamara out for the season or what? Healthy scratch for Chris Wagner?????

See above for Wagner. Coach Vaughan mentioned during the pre-game interview that they were taking care of some team issues regarding the line-up so there you go.

Jack McNamara should be back no later than the Dartmouth tournament I'm told.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Must have been something not good if those guys got scratched. Wonder if they'll be scratched tonight as well.

That guy who went to RPI wouldn't happen to be Mark Miller would it? Not that I know him, but being from NYS makes him an obvious suspect.

One thing killing Colgate besides not being able to bring in USHLers is that Ontario recruiting is drying up and a lot of those players are playing major junior instead. Many of the teams recent best players were from Ontario (Andy McDonald, Adam Mitchell, Silverthorn, Kyle Wilson, Jon Smyth, Doyle, McKinnon, Campaner).

Get a new coach, get more scholarships and start recruiting in Sweden. Junior hockey is not popular there, 1,000 fans would be a bigger crowd :) There have been some successful Swedes in the NCAA recently; Stalbergs (VT), Hagelin (Michigan), Erik Gustafsson and Hanson (N Michigan), Nyqvist (Maine)

I think Stan Moore basically retired from coaching. Milbury would get the school some serious attention, but there's no way he'd take the job. Best realistic candidate I can think of right now would be Steve Poapst, guy from the glory days (1990) who is head coach of Chicago in the USHL.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Help me out here: can a coach who fills a chair in his name be let go?? Coaches aren't generally "fired" at 'Gate, but sometimes urged to move on.

Listening to last night's game was very painful :( Could Yale have been looking at Cornell as their big victim this weekend and forgotten about little old us? It will be interesting to see who shows up for today's game.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Totally over played our studs early and burned them out early. Coach has little confidence in most players. Same people on PP- same results. Insanity

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Have to agree with Rainman. It almost seems as though this team is waiting for DMac, Jason Williams, and Ethan Cox to jump over the boards and make everyting right. Not gonna' happen. The jrs/seniors need to step up and really light a fire. Plus maybe we think about some new strategies? Obviously what we are doing night in, night out, ain't working.

I'm not sure either, but it would be unfortunate it that were the case. I think the tremendous amount of job security DV has is bad for the program. Not to mention he's not a good coach. I would really have liked to see Dickson as a head coach. Class act and the players respected him.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Just watched the fist and second periods of last night's game on NHL network. I didn't realize that Brown has the second best PP in the country, at 33%. No wonder their PP looked so good.

So, nine penalties and two 5 on 3's doomed us. We have to stay outta the box, Don just looked so frustrated. I honestly thought we played them even 5 on 5. Watching the next day from center ice lets me get a better perspective of the play. WE LOST BECAUSE OF SPECIAL TEAMS. We actually outshot Brown. It was not Evin's fault either. We need to stay outta the dam box. At 1-29 on our PP you won't win many games.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Shabby, lets together stop this nonsense. This thread goes on with blaming, and finger pointing, and crying. Read my earlier post. There is no blame.

The coach must have a lot of immature cry babies on his hands. These players must be reading the negative whining posts, and taking comfort in them.

Why don't you all spend more time finding solutions, and post things that help build character and maturity of these young men, rather than typing posts of firings, and blame.

Each of these young players are not being held accountable by any of you. Did you all grow up without any difficulty or challenge.

The old saying is: "What doesn't kill you will only make you stronger"

D.V. doesn't teach them to take stupid penalties, or cry to each other like these posts seem to be heading.

"Stand up and be accountable".
"Take ownership" of both yourself, and your play ground, ( dressing room ).
"Play for each other"
"Become highly positive spirited leaders without worry of a challenge"

For God's sake: "Grow Up"

The lesson these young men are learning is far greater than wins and losses.

D.Mac and Willy and Coxy are gone. So, who's going to step to the plate. Who's going to go to the wall for each other. Who's the man / men ??

Who or Whom ??

Maybe there is no one. I hope I'm wrong !!

Isn't it DV's job to hold them accountable? No one here is being paid to hold the team accountable, to make sure they perform, and to make sure that they are becoming leaders. Would you like to ask DV for the chance to address the team, maybe coach a game? Maybe we can get the whole lot of us behind the bench for a game seeing as it's apparently our job to make sure they perform.

I can guarantee you none of the players put stock in what this board has to say; they put stock in what DV has to say and how he implements and enforces the strategies and ideals he believes are crucial to success. At this point there seems to be a problem with his ability to convey or enforce a message, the players level of respect for him, or the message itself. Either way, you can put all of the blame on the players if you want, but in the end DV is the one setting the agenda, setting the level of standards that these players should be achieving, and ensuring that they are met.

Paul Tudor Jones had a great motto: "Losers Average Losers"; perhaps we need someone willing and capable of holding the team to higher standards and enforcing those standards, rather than someone who seems to be overly complacent with his employment situation.

Could have won this one. Didn't think so with the start, but at 3 - 3 it looked like we were in it. Then same old same old. The talent is what it is so coaching is what needs to take us over the top. There is certainly enough talent to play in the ECAC but why aren't we getting results.
Hamburg Brisebois Smith line total -5
Firman Mayer Prokow line total -3
Day Wagner Bourdon line total -1
Bartliff McCann Long line total +3
Who deserves more playing time and who deserves less?
Mihalik looked good for a freshman and kept Gate in the game. One weak goal, but overall did very good for a freshman thrown to the wolves- especially in the first period.
Coaches need to look at rewarding the players that are getting it done and challenge the guys who aren't getting it done. Stop the entitlement attitude. Try new personnel on PK and PP.
If the coaches can't right the ship then they shouldn't be coaching at this level. 7 NHL draftees and we can't win.
Just one frustrated fans opinion.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Strange feeling

If you had told me at any point before the season that we would lose to Yale at home 6-4, I would not have been remotely shocked. All things considered, it's hard to feel bad about this one, except that it makes our losing streak 5 games. Delightful

At least this is more fun than watching the Islanders....

Re: Colgate 2010-11

We didn't go down without a fight. We scored 4 goals, Day finally lit the lamp after a scoring drought, and we played much, MUCH better than we did last night.

But we had a 4-game homestand, and we went 0-4. And sadly, come January 6 2011, we'll still have a goose-egg in the league win column. But if I have anything else to say, it's that we should keep playing every subsequent game as if we were playing Yale.
