Re: Colgate 2010-11

We keep trying the same thing with the same players. what"s the definition of insanity?
Until there is accountability for every player on the ice, expect more of the same....

 :( :( :(

Swept at home! That really hurts! Friday night we have a poor start then finish strong but unable to win, today we start strong but self-destruct. The team is showing flashes of talent, but something, yes SOMETHING is wrong with this team.

Another 0-fer on the power play and a 4th straight game with a PP goal-against is what I want to point the finger at. Also want to blame the scoring droughts from Day and Smith. I am happy that Mihalik got the start today; hopefully he'll get another one soon. He is not to blame for the Quinnipiac goals. The 1st was off a 3-on-1, the 2nd on a delayed penalty where we made almost no effort to touch up, and the 3rd while on the PK, which has been an Achilles' heel for us so far.

And yet after all this, I'm (fortunately) not ready to hit the panic button as there's 18 more league games for us to grab a handful of W's. Wonder if we're in for another 8th place finish?

I'll be watching the Brown and Yale games online next weekend; I'll be praying for at least 2 points to right the ship. The team better work on special teams in practice as well as not giving up an early or late-period goal.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I'm saying you should probably just start blaming him and his staff for everything and not the players, but whatever.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Here is my summary for the issues with this team thus far. Entitlement of players who don't hustle but are rewarded with more and more ice time. Look at the number of games played, the first number and the plus/minus, the second number.

Leadership is EARNED not granted!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

This is admittedly the perspective of someone who missed today's game, and has only been able to listen to a few contests so far, but I see a few major concerns

-Special Teams. Already mentioned, but yikes. Worst in the ECAC, one of the worst in the nation, both PP and PK

-Defense. We've given up at least 3 goals in our last 4 games after returning every member of last year's D corps. This was supposed to be a strength, what happened? I admit to not being 100% sold on Evin, but that doesn't completely explain or excuse some of the breakdowns and goal totals

-Consistency. Game to game and even within the games. Up big on Clarkson, then suddenly tied, then hammered the next day at SLU. Down early to Princeton, but then we rally before giving it up. Up 1 on Quinnipiac, suddenly down 2. I'm not seeing the complete effort needed to win games, or maintain any kind of momentum

Not having a full home weekend until this point in the season probably hadn't helped, but that goes out the window when you get swept in said home series. Is this team capable of re-focusing and getting the kind of consistency necessary to start winning games? I don't want to believe last year's 4th place finish was a fluke. There is real potential talent on this team (just ask the NHL), let's see it

I don't know where you get the overall +/- stats Gaterrooter, but it shows that our best players so far in that category are freshman and sophomores -- implying they come out to play but the juniors and seniors don't. Maybe that should be worked on in practice. Though IMO the special teams are top priority right now.

The news just got worse as we are the only team in the ECAC so far with three league losses. We're only 1 of 2 teams still looking for a league win. (Brown is the other, and they're our next opponent!) Nowhere to go but up, though I'm still confident we can right the ship.

The 1st was off a 3-on-1, the 2nd on a delayed penalty where we made almost no effort to touch up, and the 3rd while on the PK, which has been an Achilles' heel for us so far.

And on that second goal (where you say we made no effort to touch up), another reason not to put it all on Mihalik is that he had been pushed over and was laying on his back when the puck went into the net. How goaltender interference wasn't called, I'll never know...But overall Mihalik did impress me yesterday. Looked solid for the most part.

To go along with the plus/minus listing....The line that has impressed me the most this year is the Long/McCann/Rivellini line....what does it say that I think its our 4th line that looks the best? The "stars" of the team need to show more consistancy and when that happpens, we can play with anyone in the league if all our lines show up every day and every time they're on the ice.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Michalik was bum rushed and three guys crashed the goal on the first one. On the second he was down(not sure how he ended up on his back) and the pass came across for a one timer and he got one leg way up in the air and got a peice of it but it went in. It was almost a highlight film save. Neither were his fault.

The third goal was at the other end and I don't know if it was weak or not. We skated well but "can't finish", could have won both games this weekend. V ery few quality shots did we have. 0-12 on the powerplay....nothing happening in front of the goal.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Seems we don't have that Jesse Winchester garbage-type goal getter that can put the puck in the net off the scrums in the paint. Several times we miss-hit vs. Princeton (didn't see last night's game). We definietly need to rethink special teams and better get in lots of practice this week before Yale comes to town, or we're toast.

Yikes!...Dartmouth scores 13 goals this weekend and sweeps in enemy territory. Princeton takes down Cornell...could the Tigers pose some problems for the Eli this season? They are quick, fast, and have a number of good young players. Looks like they reloaded again. As to our players, one has to wonder what's happening in the locker room? The seniors should be providing leadership to the frosh and sophs, but judging by Gaterroters' +/- list it's the upperclassmen that need to be shaken up. Perhaps DV needs to throw that clipboard around. As to the goalie situation I'm all for Mihalik getting the next start; what do we have to lose?

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Just a few thoughts from Saturday's game. Without naming names, I saw more individual play than team play. There is no leadership where someone is setting an example through their consistent play. D-men are pinching/stepping up without any acknowledgment of forward support, or lack thereof, leading to odd man rushes through neutral zone. Lastly, I see forwards who while in their own end, need to exhibit more of a defensive attitude instead of thinking offense first. They are very rarely on the defensive side of the puck when it is up for grabs. Gaterrooter, your point on entitlelment is legit. As far as goaltending...Mihalik was solid, however, Q-Pac goalie was better when he needed to be. On the goal when Mihalik was on his back, it was Price who took him out.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

So we have beat around the bush on what is wrong so far. How do we set this team up to succeed? What do you do to the lines and how do you motivate players that have been there 2 and 3 years already and know the drill? One other note, I thought Hamburg played well on Friday night and congrats on picking up his first point. So how does he find himself out of the line up on Saturday. That made no sense to me.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Here we go another coach from the stands with an opinion

The first line needs to be broken up. It just aint clicking. The 3 of them should be on seperate lines.
The above 3 also play on PP & PK. Totally over play'd. To add to their frustration, you can see the gas tank is runing on MT out there,
but they keep being thrown out there.
You cant overplay these guys and expect production, if it aint there from the start.

They need to try and put a Fwd on the point for the PP, that has vision to help quarter back inside the offensive blue line.
Their is too much running around & you see on several ocasions 3 guy's chasing the puck in the same corner

Goaltending is the least of our problems, if we could get a point or two on the PP goals against wouldnt be a problem
I like Evin at present!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Not trying to hijack your thread, fellas, but does Colgate stream their games via AmericaOne or B2 network? Looking for this weekend v. Brown in particular.
Thanks in advance...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Friday's game is going to be broadcast locally in the Central New York area on Time Warner Sports. The Time Warner broadcast (with Time Warner announcers) will be streamed on Colgate All-Access (through ICS/Sidearm). I believe it costs $5.95 for a one-day pass or something along those lines. And it will be the same for Saturday's Yale game.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Have a question for Coach Vaughan? Seriously. Come down to Rusch's Bar and Grill for the Colgate Coaches Show brought to you by Alliance Bank tonight at 7:00 p.m. Coach Vaughan will be on the show from 7:00 p.m. until about 7:30 p.m. We will take questions from the audience. A player or two should be along as well.

If you can't make it to the live broadcast, we'll be on 93.9 FM WKXZ and GoColgateRaiders.com via TEAMLINE from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

EDIT: Unfortunately due to a scheduling conflict, Coach Vaughan will be unable to join me tonight. There will still be a show however we will not be talking about Colgate men's hockey.

Just a situation where there was no other time they could practice with a full compliment of guys because of pre-Thanksgiving Monday/Tuesday classes. Practice begins while the show is going on and won't finish until after it is over. We didn't know there'd be a conflict until this morning, after I had made the posting. Also a situation where the assistant coaches aren't available either because of practice/recruiting.

We'll instead have on swimming coach Fernando Canales and cross country coach Laura Nardelli and possibly Patriot League champ Elise DeRoo.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

thanks "Gate Radio...thanks for your posts and the great job you do on the radio broadcasts...although a 'Gate fan you approach each game with an objectivity that is often missing these days...we're lucky to have you participating in our conversations...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I agree with GC, great job on the broadcasts, thoroughly enjoy them. Also thanks for the work you put in on the blog as well. It's a great read especially the game recaps and the pregame write ups.
