Re: Colgate 2009-2010

My guess would be Long, he played stronger and stronger last year. Nice to have some depth in goal. I would think it's Long's job to lose, and Evin is penciled in for his Jr and Sr seasons . Who knows ?

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Good evening, 'gate fans. Looking forward to listening in Friday and Saturday as the Mavs hit the road this weekend. Be interested in hearing what you guys have to say about your team.

Blais's team is off to a decent start, getting by Army and Lowell in the Icebreaker, neither by a terribly decisive margin, but with enough gas in the tank to come from behind both games. Blais has stressed conditioning and fundamentals - literally to the exclusion, parents and players tell me, of X's and O's. That makes the offense creative in a stickball sort of way; the defense is a shade off-kilter and amenable to communication errors and other mistakes.

Jeremie Dupont (1), UNO's senior goalie, left the game at the midpoint of both Friday and Saturday after giving up three goals. There is some debate about whether he was pulled or planned to swap out, but there's no hiding he has a GAA of 6 and the freshman John Faulkner (30) has a .947 SV %and a .091 GAA.

Offensively, UNO's junior forward Rich Purslow (9) was CCHA offensive POTW after a four-point weekend, and freshman Terry Broadhurst (17) has looked impressive so far.

Whadaya think? How's your home ice advantage? Gonna kill us? Get killed? Split 'em?

In any case, thanks for having our boys out your way. Wave to me - I'll be listening to the radio.

Best,

Rick

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Expect overtime ;)

Great to see interest from Mavs fans, and great to see UNO on the schedule :)

Admittedly, I have only listened to our team on the radio this season (and that was only half-way on Friday night ;)), but generally we'll have experience amongst the forwards, and inexperienced skill on defense. If UNO is able to really generate pressure, it's going to make life difficult for the young defense, so I'll admit I'm still concerned about it

Our forwards are deep, but the 3 to keep an eye on are Hobey Finalist David McIntyre, senior Brian Day and the Super Soph Austin Smith. McIntyre and Smith in particular seem to have a flair for the dramatic, so keep your eye on them if the game is tight late

In goal, I wouldn't be surprised to see 2 'tenders this weekend. Charles Long grabbed the starting job last year, and is solid. Alex Evin might get the other start, and while he didn't impress last season, he's only a sophomore and apparently looked good on Saturday

We're tougher at home, and my inclination is that we'll split the series. Whatever happens, I'm glad we're getting the chance to test ourselves against a talented team early in the season. Should be a fun weekend

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

UNO is now ranked #16 in the most recent USCHO poll! Should be a good series this weekend.

MavRick, I think you guys will be evenly matched. Our home ice advantage is never great, as Starr Rink struggles to get 1,000 fans and only sells out for 1 game (Cornell). And with the students on break this weekend, the visitors could think they're playing in a ghost rink of sorts with no sign of life from the fans. This could either help or hurt your team, depending on whether they excel or not in hostile arenas.

Right now, I'm predicting a series split. Should be a great 2 games for both teams.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Hey Mav

If UNO comes out of the "gate" strong, it could give us fits. We don't seem to get our skating legs until we're in a hole and take our fair share of penalties. Starr is anything but intimidating. My guess is your boys will feel right at home. If there's even one UNO fan in the stands, you'll hear him loud and clear over the airwaves, lol.

Hope we can give your boys a good series.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

An addendum to the Raiders Alumni Report that was played over the air on Saturday night. Nick St. Pierre is actually still with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch. At the time I put the piece together and recorded it, he wasn't listed on the club's website as being on the roster. But, he is still with the Crunch and picked up his second point of the season last night in a road loss to the Rochester Amerks. From the looks of the TV broadcast of the Crunch-Amerks game, the rink was maybe 1/5 full and the crowd for an AHL game was nowhere near that of the Colgate-RIT Saturday night affair.

You may be right Shabby, but DV, in his media statement, said Evin singlehandly saved the RIT game with some unbelievable saves on Sat. nite. I know he stonewalled a couple of shots near the end that preserved the win. Maybe we have alternating goalies again vs. UNO?...

MavRick - good to see some UNO posters here. Hope we can give your team a real challenge this w/e. Sounds like you've been successsful so far. Ought to be a good series, and I also see a split coming. Now if we could just generate some fan support...

Colgate and Army will meet in the inaugural Cape Cod Collegiate Hockey Classic on Columbus Day weekend 2010 in Hyannis, Mass., it was recently announced.

The Raiders and the Black Knights will square off at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center, Saturday, October 9. While opening face-off will be determined at a later date, tickets will be $12 for adults and $8 for kids under 12. Colgate will serve as the home team.

The building in Hyannis was just officially opened not too long ago . From the pictures, it looks nice for a 26-million dollar rink and youth center.

It's an interesting way to open up the season for both teams. I'm not quite sure if a Division I game has ever been played on the Cape. As someone that's spent at least one weekend per summer on the Cape for the last five-six years, it's a wonderful place and hopefully the weather will still be hospitable. Hotels should also be relatively cheap because it will be off-season. A weird thought but Colgate's season next year could begin on Cape Cod in Hyannis and potentially end up in Atlantic City.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

GR, maybe you can answer this. I believe the Cape Cod Gulls played at the aud. in Hyannis for a number of years. Probably not this new arena though. Not sure if they were in the Eastern League or some other. Don't think they were AHL-caliber.

Should be a good recruiting trip also, being near Boston and in Mass. Wonder if there are two other teams involved? Kind of a long trip not to have a four-team tourney...

Likewise I spend a week or two on the Cape after Labor Day each year and the weather is always great. Winter comes late to the area due to the warmth of the ocean. Trees - such as they are - should be colorful around Columbus Day. Sounds like a good road trip for 'Gate followers.

A quick perusal of HockeyDB.com has an answer for you. Cape Cod has had five minor-pro teams in leagues ranging from the North American Hockey League to the Eastern Hockey League to the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. The longest any team lasted was two years. The Eastern League was the home of the Johnstown Jets, the inspiration for the movie Slap Shot.

It is a long trip for a game but given the alumni bases of the two schools, it should make for a fun atmosphere.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I played in South Yarmouth in the mid 70's against the Cape Cod Cubs in I believe the Cape Cod Coliseum at the time . I was playing for the Mohawk Valley Comets and it was in the North American Hockey League. We were one league below the WHA then and we were the farm club for the Indianapolis Racers. The Johnstown Jets were in our league, the three Carlson bros played for the Jets, they were called the Hansen bros in the movie, two of the bros and Dave Hansen who played for the Jets also.

The old Eastern hockey league was before that when the Comets played in Clinton NY. I played against all the guys in the movie "Slapshot." EHL had the Long Island Ducks, New haven Blades etc. Now those were the days. Many stories.

Got the call and will be an Off ice official tonight in the "Sin Bin." What a view !!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Allmost game time!! Too bad that there will be a light crowd there tonight. Hopefully all in attendence will see a solid performance by both teams (and a win by the Mav's of course:). )

You were right about both of those predictions. 500+ for the home opener? Disappointing, but with the students on break, I'm not surprised :o

Happy to see the Raiders avoid a loss tonight yet again. Sounds like the team has a knack for finding ways to play "extra hockey". Lastly, it looks like Alex Evin is trying to win the #1 goaltender position. I don't want to jinx it, but things are starting to look optimistic between the pipes :)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Welp, I watched the streaming feed (filmed in Drunk-o-Vision with Excessive Zoom technology) and thought McIntyre was quite impressive, as was Colgate's neutral zone play. Evin obviously had a good outing. The doom predictions for Gate's defense are obviously premature.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

A nice game last night, though I really only saw the 3rd period. Disappointing we weren't able to finish some chances in the 3rd that would have gotten the win, but overall a good showing. Evin looked good, though it wouldn't surprise me to see Long in net tonight. 0-5 on the PP is not good, and they looked especially bad during the last PP in OT

Congrats the Bartliff on collegiate goal #1 :)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

At even strength they were much better than against RIT.

Powerplay let us down. 5 on 3 for 1:44 in the 2nd period and didn't do anything with it. Also the chance on the powerplay in overtime. I think it could have been a win with a goal or two on the powerplay. There's not enough movement, players are standing still too much.

I think that Vaughn should stop putting Day, McIntyre and Smith on the same unit and use the same lines he uses at even strength. Bartliff-McIntyre-Day seems to be a good line at even strength (they got the goal), why not use the same guys on the PP? Also the defenders need to be a little closer together on the blueline and more toward the middle to take a better angle point shot. Try Larkin down low in front of the goal or near the net (didn't somebody say that's how he scored a lot in prep school?)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I thought we looked great through 2 periods.... fast, controlled the puck, good D...everything you could ask for and more except a lot of shots. Then the kids made a mistake and the world crashed down, just like the Yale game last year. Again, like last year, DV should have taken a time out to calm the troops. He didn't then and we folded in OT and the same thing happened tonight when it didn't need to...the boys panicked for about 3-4 minutes and it was all over. DV has to take charge in these types of situations and for whatever reason it never occurs to him to do so...focus Don, focus...:(
