Re: Colgate 2009-2010

:(

It sounds like we self-destructed in the 3rd period last night. Very reminiscent of the Yale game last January. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for the team (and the young D-men).

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

It's nights like this that make you worry about a young team, but given their ability to bounce back, I like their chances of playing better the rest of the way. UNO is no slouch of a team, and going to Lowell will be another good test. All setting ourselves up to make a run in conference play.

Here's a question for the weekend: who gets the start in goal? Do you go with the hotter hand in Evin, or the experience in Long? If they're in competition for the starting spot, Evin seems to have the edge so far

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I thought we looked great through 2 periods.... fast, controlled the puck, good D...everything you could ask for and more except a lot of shots.

I'm glad to hear that. It's harder for me to keep perspective over the airwaves. Good UVM/BC game on tv today - love those Catamount fans at the Gut.

I could swear that we played a hockey game on Cape Cod many years ago and that this isn't the first time...?

Congrats 'Gate football!
Good Luck at Holy Cross!

I don't know. It seems like more of the same-old same-old -- can't score on the PP, can't beat a good team at home, yada yada yada. I know UNO is good but we should have won one of those games.

As far as goaltending goes, Evin is playing better right now so he should get the next start -- there shouldn't be any discussion. I'll take talent over experience any day.

Waiting for Shabby's perspective from the penalty box. Does the team look any better from there?

The ECAC's going to be tough this year. Union beat Maine twice. Q won twice at Ohio State. RPI beat UNH. And the Ivies haven't played yet and they're good. I'm with Shabby -- make me a believer.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Magoo reminded me Shabby was meeting and greeting in the box this weekend and both nights he got a chance to say hello to way too many Gate players...We really have to clean up our act on the stupid penalty side or we will continually shoot ourselves in the foot. McIntyre got a penalty late in one of the games this weekend when we could least afford it..He has to lead by better example than that....

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Sooo different watching from the penalty box, you get a whole new perspective. It looks so much easier up in the stands, you forget(as an ex player) how fast things happen and you have a split second to react. I almost hate to say it but...I have a new found respect for the officials. Everything is not only so quick but I think we have a better perspective on plays watching from the stands, a diff viewpoint anyways.

Anyhoo...Friday night I thought we were a more talented hockey team individually. Very impressed with the frosh especially Larkin. He's a big boy(6-4) but skates tremendously well and I don't know how we were able to land him. I just think he could play for any D-1 team.

Our power play is anemic, no control, don't move the puck around and very few quality shots. Glad we finally scored on one because we were something like 0-17 probably the worst in the country. Larkin set up Long with a great pass from the point where he one timed it and the goalie had NO chance.

We do posess alot of talent but they need to play more together as a team. McIntyre and Brisebois seem to try to do it by themselves and run around too much. UNO seemed much more composed and passed alot especially on the powerplay. Dean Blais barely uttered a word on the bench, just would take out his little pad every once in a while and note something.

Our young defense played well but suffered some growing pains as Larkin gave up the winning goal Sat night on a takeaway, leaving Long hanging out to dry on a one on 0. McNamara and Pop played well, good to have them back. As Magoo noted, offensively looks alot like last year, looks like lowscoring close games again. On a positive note though we played a very good team even for five periods until falling apart after the giveaway in the third. INCH has UNO ranked #10 and they will rise on USCHO when the polls come out later today. Who knows...we get the go ahead goal in the third and win and all of a sudden we're 2-0-2 and in the top 20 probably. One bad play !!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I'd have to agree with early sentiments from Shabby and Magoo...so far, and I know it's very, very early, I see nothing to get overly excited about. I watched the first UNO game on All-Access (BTW, a rip-off since the system seems to be either malfunctioning a high percentage of the time or there's no audio to go with video) and parts of game #2. I'm trying to remember when was the last time a Colgate men's hockey team defeated a legitimately ranked non-ECAC opponent. The ECAC looks improved again this year and averaging 2.2 or 2.3 goals per game will not get us very far. The PP again looks very tentative and UNO pressured the point men pretty well (on the PP kill, on the other hand, we still stay in the tight box with very little pressure). My wish is that this year's frosh and a couple of last year's frosh can step it up a little and chip in with a few goals; otherwise we'll struggle to get home ice in the first round. I hope I'm dead wrong but the whole seems to be less than the sum of the parts...

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

You Guys must be part of a mutual admiration society. After reading your posts, consider that I,m in a bad mood now.

Green Coat, Try a little more of a positive attitude, especially when you have 4 D in their first month of NCAA hockey, and the other 3 D starting their second season, as McNamara and Poplawski missed last year.

Shabby, your asessment seems better from the stands.
Mac, spent the whole weekend setting his team-mates up, with little results other than Bartliff on Friday nights tie.

Oldtimer, if you watched the penalty call late in the game, you must of noticed it took Murphy a good 3-5 seconds to realize it was Mac, whom made a good clean check, then raised his arm. They have history.

Why would you guys point the finger at a guy whom help's put Colgate's Name in the Press, and gives it every shift of every game.

Lastly, all the PP needs is a good Q.B., which has not surfaced yet. We should have won both games, but errors and turnovers, especially Saturday in the 3rd period, spoiled what looked to be a decent weekend.

UNO is now ranked 10th, which is a joke, as other than there Goaltender being totally noticable all weekend, that was it. They were 14 minutes away from not being ranked at all.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Right in front of me McIntyre runs the guy from behind and raises his arms with an extra push and gets a roughing penalty. There was about two minutes left in the third period AND it was at center ice in the neutral zone. What was he thinking, those penalties will drive a coach crazy ! Not smart !!

I said our defensmen look good...but how many games are you going to win scoring two goals in two games !

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I believe it is WAY too early to be either psyched or negative about this team. I am happy for the way they are playing because they show talent and I know things will improve. Consider for a moment that there are 6 seniors and 3 juniors.......the rest are sophomores and freshmen. Let's let them get used to each other and the Div. 1 game. They have a big challenge at Lowell on Friday.......all good preseason experiences.
Go 'Gate!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. Inconsistency on offense has been a problem the past 3-4 years. Both Smith and Day didn't get on the scoresheet this weekend - that doesn't help. I know it looks like finger-pointing when we mention individuals but let's face it -- McIntyre, Day, and Smith are our go-to guys and the team needs them to set the tone.

all the PP needs is a good Q.B.
Agree. We could use a Cory Murphy type d-man who's good with the puck. Could Larkin fill this role?

It's very frustrating for all of us. We're looking for a sign that the team's turning the corner but it hasn't come yet. But the talent level is improving, IMO.

2.23 left in the 3rd exactly, and it was against the boards between the blue line and red line on the Colgate bench side of the ice, and like I said a clean check, and watched Murphy delay the call until he saw whom it was. It was not in the neutral zone in mid-ice. Sorry Shabby

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Any alumni making the trip to Lowell for Friday's game? We have a nice arena and an excellent drinking/eating spot 2 blocks away.

I plan on going to Friday's game. My only question is if I will be able to purchase a ticket at the box office. I've done some research and your arena fits about 6,500 for hockey. Only thing is, will this game sell out beforehand?

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

LMAO...Dog, the neutral zone is between the bluelines, where he plastered him against the boards OMG !! I was in the penalty box staring at McIntyre the whole time ! It was right in front of me across the ice. Center ice is anywhere between the bluelines not in your offensive or defensive zones.

What's LAMO?, or is it not printable? Sorry, I'm a tech newbie...

Agree with many points here, but have to second the motion of CU13. Need to give these guys a chance to grow a bit. New teamates, new ice for many, new rink, new combinations, give them time to work out the kinks. These OOC games are warmups for the big time, i.e. ECAC play. Yes, I know; they count in the rankings and in our overall PWR, but the most important thing we can do is win out the ECAC and go from there. Hopefully our young kids will be seasoned vets by March...We get in the top four, that would be great; more likely in the top eight...

Recent sell out numbers from their home games suggest actual capacity is around 6200. Judging by the marketing blitz for this game by the school (complete with "Our Team, Our Time" web site), I'm expecting a sell-out crowd on Friday night. It's also the team's home opener. I would call ahead just to be safe.
