Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Only an exhibition game but a great start. Frosh score 3 goals, returning D men 2 others and super soph the 6th. Three are power plays. Sorry our first string all american didn't get one but he had a lot of chances..Assume Day Firman and Larkin were nicked up and couldn't go? DV has to be pleased!:)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

...it appears we've gone back to the small speedy prototype.
Yeah, we looked kinda' small out there tonight, except for Carty.

I got there late in the second. Quick notes:

Didn't see Day.

Poplawski put in the final goal with a shot a few feet inside the blue line.

Bartliff had one shift in the third where he was everywhere -- nearly scored, stole the puck more than once, singlehandedly kept play in the Waterloo zone for 20-30 seconds.

The third Waterloo goal looked like a softie. I was way down on the other end, but there was a scramble to the right of the net and it looked like Long just didn't get his pad up against the post.

McIntyre was head and shoulders above the rest, IMO.

I can't comment on the rest of the game or players, but we really didn't look great, especially on the PP. (Are we going to be !@*^!%@!! anemic in that department AGAIN this year?). Waterloo is...whoever they are. This should not have even been a contest. Sheesh, one of their kids even wiped out during warmups doing a basic crossover coming around his net. Midway through the third it was 5-3 Colgate and Waterloo was buzzing on a 5 x 3. Long was wayyy out of position -- all one Waterloo player had to do was throw the puck at the net and it's 5-4 with ten minutes left.

Too close. We have a lot of work to do, and fast.

Student section was actually full, but dead silent. Ugh. All these frosh coming in thinking, "OK, hockey is the big sport at Colgate. Let's go to the game! Oh, here we are at the rink and I hear crickets chirping. Mental note: find something more fun to do on weekend nights this winter." Grown-up side of the rink had maybe 30 people.

I'm sure a lot of people were worn out from the football game in terms of the small reserved seat crowd. That's a long day to go to the football game, then probably to dinner and wrap up with a hockey exhibition game against a CIS team. Heck I admit, I couldn't even pull that off - I was shot after the football game. I'll probably drop by practice on Monday and Tuesday and Tuesday night is the Coaches Show.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Gotter, you were there and I was peeking at the live stats while watching the Devils lose and the Rangers win, but you missed 7 of the 9 goals scored in the game, 3 of which were Colgate power plays. In addition to scoring 2 goals Bourdon looks like he can take key face offs, Smith scored, you already indicated Bartliff had some talent and BOTH McNamara and Poplawski scored in their first game back after a year off. This Waterloo team lost to U Michigan in an exhibition game last year by only 3-1 and then went on to a good season so they're not chopped liver. I choose to believe this year will be different from last...Please Dear God!;)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I was home too. Day was sent home with the flu ! On a sad note..Larkin's mom was killed in Italy this week in a motorcycle accident !

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

GREAT Homecoming football game and gorgeous weather! Way to knock Cornell from the unbeatens :) Next up, Princeton on national tv this Thursday. We have many weapons and it's great to be 5-0, but our schedule hasn't exactly been against the Villanovas of the FCS. Holy Cross will be our best test in a few weeks. Great to see Eachus back on the gridiron and hope the kicker is ok...we're weak in that dept. as it is.

When the frosh can make an immediate impact on the ice, I'm even more optimistic! Deadbeat crowd in a glorified high school arena...what else is new. Everyone picking us 9-12...I think we're going to mess up a few contest results :p

Just saw your post shabby - that is awful news. Our thoughts go out to him.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Just terrible news about Larkin's mom :(

Nice to hear some good news out of the exhibition. PP Goals, Smith and McIntyre on the scoresheet, Poplawski and McNamara back and making a difference, all very nice. Bartliff is an interesting case, as he was on some scouting lists going into last year's Draft. Very curious to see what he'll bring to the table.

Any reports on how the defensemen looked playing defense? Goals from the blueline are nice, but the sooner they settle into their roles, the sooner we make our run to the top of the ECAC ;)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Had whiplash from watching Eachus, Sullivan, Simonds march up and down the field, and couldn't take in the game last night.

But glad to hear the promising news about the team's first outing. Great to see the frosh get into it from the get-go. Sorry to hear of the Larkin tragedy...bum news. Poplawski and McNamara back and contributing is super news.

Be interesting to see how the team handles traveling to Niagara...

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I was at both games yesterday (football and hockey), and boy, was I impressed!

Football: Great weather, a great crowd, and a great win over our archrivals from SUNY Ithaca. Wasn't expecting to see Eachus in the game, yet the first time he touches the ball he scores a touchdown! I'd love to see both Eachus and McCord in the backfield. The opposing defense won't know what's coming? Eachus running? McCord running? Sullivan running? Plus, if Eachus or McCord feel like they need to take a breather, the other RB can come in for a few plays -- it'll be like we've got a fresh set of legs late in the game! Now all I have to do is find a place that gets ESPNU this Thursday night -- here in MA Comcast doesn't carry it unless you get their top-priced digital package with a bunch of convenience/service fees.

Hockey: A great start to what will hopefully be a great season! 3 of our 6 goals scored by freshmen? 1 goal scored by Wade Poplawski in his first game after injury? Hopefully this will add to our offensive weapons. McIntyre was looking great too, with a couple assists and skating with some speed. The only complaint was that Brian Day didn't play. Hopefully he was just out with the flu like sshabby previously said.

As far as the defense goes, they're doing their job, freshmen included. It's dispappointing that Larkin did not get to play (I didn't hear of the tragedy until viewing the last few posts on this thread), but the more experience, the better we'll get. I also noticed both McNamara and Poplawski together on the power play -- they were both doing a great job on the blue line keeping the puck in the offensive zone. Now hopefully we can have a power play unit that for once is successful -- just shoot the **** puck at the net, nothing fancy!

Lastly, as far as goaltending goes, all 3 netminders were rather decent. Long was the most tested, facing the most shots, including stopping a shorthanded breakaway. The 1 goal he allowed though was a rather soft one, as Gotter previously posted. Compare that to the goal Bessette allowed (result of a 2 on 1), and the one Evin allowed (he really didn't have a chance to make the stop), but there's plenty of room for improvement.

Looking forward to a great season! We just need to avoid that November slump that has "doomed" us the past 3 years.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Colgate #23 in SportsNetwork poll...no surprise there, really...and HC #19. But what's up with 0-4 Lehigh getting 22 votes to Lafayette's 16?!

Go get those Tigers on national tv!
Go 'Gate!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Well, since it's tonight...

Head coach Don Vaughan will make his first appearance on the Colgate Coaches Show brought to you by Alliance Bank tonight. The show goes from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm and it emanates from the Tap Room at the Colgate Inn. Coach will be on from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm and then I'll be joined in the final half hour by co-captains David McIntyre and Ethan Cox, each for around 15 minutes.

The show can be heard live on 94 KXZ. For those of you not in the listening area, the show will be streamed live (audio and video) from the Colgate Inn as part of the Colgate All-Access package. If you don't catch it live, there should be an archive available sometime this week.

Coach Vaughan will be a guest on the show on Oct. 20 however the next hockey-only show won't be until Tuesday, Nov. 3, a few days before Silver Puck weekend.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Just found this out by surfing through my cable guide on Time Warner. Apparently Saturday night's game between Colgate and RIT is going to be shown on Time Warner Sports not only in the western New York market (as I mentioned on the Coaches Show) but it's also going to be shown in the Central NY market on channel 26. My listing has the game slotted from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Great news for folks who want to see the Raiders in action before the home opening weekend against UNO. No word on who'll be calling the game though.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

That's great news, radio! BTW...Very glad to have you aboard as you contribute greatly here.

I have a question for you, something I never understood. Colgate football and hockey used to be covered by WIBX (Lloyd Walsh football for years) that's Utica. Then later on WMCR out of Oneida, NY. The radio reception was outstanding in the Utica-Rome area for us. NOW...Radio from Norwich NY which none of us in the area can even get !! Honestly..my friend here who is treasurer of the Maroon Council has to sit in his car outside to get it . He's about 75, pretty cold in the winter here. There has to be more alumnus in this area than Norwich and Earlville !! Some people don't have computers and can't even listen. In my opinion this is a travesty. Why did they change ??

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Good question, I'm not really sure. From what I can gather after an Internet search, the rights changed hands in the mid-to-early 1990s from WMCR to WKXZ. This happens a lot in radio where a team or school will switch radio stations for a better deal, more air time, a better signal in certain areas, etc etc. My first real broadcasting job doing games at Cortland State ended because of a switch in radio rights from one station to another. Also, look at Syracuse; its' flagship rights just changed a few years ago from 95X to TK99. So, this happens.

Right now, we have a great schedule with WKXZ which allows us to cover every football and men's hockey game home and away. Plus we have a good amount of men's and women's hoops and a decent number of coaches shows. All the games are on the same station and we have two different voices covering all three sports as opposed to just one a while ago. Other schools that broadcast many sports have either multiple voices and/or multiple stations covering games.

Our agreement (hockey) with WMCR has been renewed so we'll again have the select schedule of Saturday night games plus playoff coverage. The schedule expanded a bit last year to include a few non-conference games as opposed to just league games. I think the issue with adding more games i.e. a bigger schedule is that WMCR does a lot of high school sports coverage and they usually have on a high school football or hoops game on Friday. I don't have our exact WMCR schedule yet but I can find out it easily enough.

BTW, nice article on Tyler Burton here.

Also, for the All-Access folks, the Coaches Show archive is up. Unfortunately some technical gremlins prevented the first 10 or so minutes of the show from recording but a majority of it is up. Some real good stuff from Ethan Cox and David McIntyre in the final two segments.

NOW..radio from Norwich NY is GREAT! Yes, there are some of us, Shabby, who live in the Norwich, Earlville, Milford radius that can pick up the games very clearly - hockey and football. Hey,... you had Lloyd Walsh for a long time. It's time some of us got a clearer signal, like WKXZ.....;)

I'm glad Radio explained this, and thanks for the history lesson. Since I don't have anything but dial-up (and no cable, satellite or All-Access) I missed the coaches show on Tuesday. Wish I weren't so forgetful....BTW what did DV say?, in one or two sentences, if you could paraphrase, Radio.

I echo Shabby's comment: it's good to have you on this board; you add a lot to the hockey season.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Don't want to give too much away here....BTW a portion of the David McIntyre and Ethan Cox interviews will air this weekend during the intermission. Both were around 15 minutes long so unfortunately they won't be airing in their entirety.

Basically, the coaching staff is excited about the season and the incoming freshman. The staff feels the team has good depth and that they're expecting production out of three lines this season. He also talked about wanting to vastly improve the power play and penalty kill since both were especially poor at the end of last season.

One other quick little note that I'm sure most of you will enjoy. Coach mentioned that Colorado College would be coming to Starr Rink in a few years.

PS - Mike Harder, yes that one, is on the training camp roster of the ECHL's Trenton Devils, after spending parts of the last eight seasons playing in Europe. He last played in the States for the Charlotte Checkers during the 2004-05 season.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Great news about CC ! Haven't seen them at Starr since about 1967. They devastated me as a teenager ending our two year home unbeaten string 7-2 !!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Less than 24 hours to the regular season! Anybody see the football game on ESPNU? Was getting nervous towards the end, but the defense held strong. Nice to win in front of a national audience.

P.S. komey1, nice preview, but we're the "Raiders" now. We dropped the "red" back in 2001.
