Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I would think there is a Hockey East team somewhere on the schedule. Lowell was in Hamilton the year before last and we went to Lowell this year. I'd love a BU, BC, UNH or Northeastern game.

If the boys are already going to LSSU does that mean they wont be heading back to Chicago for the Holiday tournament?

The Army game on the cape is a home game, correct?

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Congratulations Gate on a successful season and thank you seniors for four years of exciting hockey! I am sure your leadership was key to the development of the younger players and the 4th place finish. I wish you all the best.

Sorry Doghok that you will not be posting, your insights were informative and refreshing. I hope you will continue to follow Colgate and offer your thoughts from time to time in the future. I too like to focus on the positives rather than the negatives.

TchrBill stated that he had read in another forum that Coach Vaughan had a winning percentage of .450 and was lowest among Colgate coaches. That didn't seem quite right to me, so I just did a little research on stats regarding Coach Vaughan's record and this is what I found:

Overall winning percentage is .508. His winning percentage in the ECAC is .533. He ranks 17th In winning percentage in all of NCAA D1 hockey among active coaches.
In addition:
He won two regular season titles.
Had 2 NCAA appearances.
Five trips to the ECAC final four since 2000. (Only 3 other teams Cornell, Harvard, and Dartmouth have appeared more in the ECAC final four tournament.
A 99% graduation rate.
Three Hobey Baker finalists.
One Humanitarian Award Finalist (Hopefully Ethan Cox will win.)
And has several players playing in the NHL (McDonald, C. Murphy, Winchester) who were overlooked in the draft and who developed under his tenure.
Two 1819 award winners (Thomas and Anderson). I can only remember one other athlete, perhaps a women's soccer player win that coveted award during DV's tenure.
And several All Americans (can't remember exact number).

You can't compare Colgate Hockey to other Colgate sports. The hockey team played teams who were consistently ranked nationally (three in their own league). I believe the football team lost two games against ranked opponents this year. The rest of Colgate's teams are in the Patriot League. The basketball team plays Syracuse and loses every year, I've yet to see the football team play Michigan (I wonder how they would do) and if all other teams played nationally ranked teams I'm sure they would have little success as well. Comparing Colgate hockey to other Colgate sports is like comparing Colgate football to Michigan football. No comparison.

The stats speak for themselves. As hockey fans, we should be proud of what Colgate hockey has accomplished and the extremely dedicated players who have come through the program. These players didn't come to Colgate because we have the worst facilities and less than stellar fan support. Maybe they look at these stats and see that they will have a shot an ECAC final four, or an NCAA appearance, or a chance at winning a Hobey Baker or Humanitarian award. Or if they haven't been drafted and opportunity to play for a coach who has developed NHL players. DV's record is above .500 even with all the obstacles that have been mentioned in many previous posts. Not too bad. Winning championships are not that easy especially when you have to recruit with the worst facilities (sorry Doghok).

Perhaps if all of the loyal Colgate Hockey fans would focus on all of the positives we could probably excite others enough to get them interested in hockey and get more fans into the building!

Good luck to the final four teams remaining, should be an exciting series.

Can't wait to see what next year brings. Go Gate!!!
Well said!! Don Vaughan is a class guy and an excellent coach. Most importantly he recruits players with character who are good students and go on to graduate. We are lucky to have him at Colgate.

Last I knew, the schedule was still being worked out. Though, I'm sure a tentative slate will be printed on the end-of-season banquet program like last year.

There won't be a return trip to Chicago anytime soon as far as I know. That tournament will probably move to ND's new campus facility once it is finished being built. Though, in terms of going to the midwest, there is a trip to Nebraska-Omaha in the future to finish out the home-and-home series that was started this year.

The Army game I've heard might be a home game though I am not positive. Anyone interested in going can buy tickets at the Colgate box office. There are fliers in the lobby at Reid as well promoting the game.

Hockey East teams, I'm not sure. Obviously it is extremely difficult to get some of those schools to travel to Hamilton and play at Starr. UMass-Lowell recently has been the lone exception. If there are any Hockey East teams on the schedule, chances are it will be a road game for Colgate.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Well, I for one hope both Radio and doghok continue their association with Colgate hockey. I welcome all contributions, positive or not, from Colgate supporters, and both are valued members here on this thread. I will say, though, if Radio must leave us, I hope that his greener pastures truly are such, and that he finds success. His insight and recognition have been a treat on the air, as has his actual game-calling

I also second the comments about Don Vaughan. A credit to Colgate, the ECAC and College Hockey. We are lucky to have a coach of his caliber and dedication at the helm of our program. Some credit should also go to our assistants, as recent recruiting classes appear to be very strong. A lot of key contributors have come on board in the last two years, and next year's look quite strong as well

When the league makes the block schedule, it leaves the travel partner pairings out so that the schools can decide when they want to play. Usually, there will be a few weekends where both schools are off from league play so the games will fall then. This year, the ideal second semester weekend would have been Jan. 22-23 but Cornell was playing North Dakota at home so other arrangements had to be made, resulting in the split of games between semesters.

I don't have next year's NC schedule on hand but I would guess that possibly Cornell and Colgate would play on Jan. 21 and 22. Or, it could be split to a Thursday-Saturday set with the Thursday game being at Colgate and the Saturday meeting at Lynah. Glancing at the schedule, the games could be placed in December too but I think the late January date with students present would be more desirable. I can't imagine a repeat of this year's experiment with a pair of Tuesday nighters.

Weren't they talking about making those a regular occurance? Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping hoping hoping for the more sensible home-and-home, in late January of course, but I thought there was talk that the two-semester Tuesdays would be a more regular occurance, or at least something similar

I agree with Rainman regarding our weak OOC slate. More HE/CCHA/WCHA opponents if we can, please

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there mention that Colorado College was coming to Hamilton in the near future?

his hometown of Walpole, MA (also home of Mike Milbury ... good omen?)

As an Islanders fan, I strenuously object to the characterization of any Mad Mike reference as a "good omen"

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I read somewhere that they were trying to tie some alumni events around this Cape Cod Columbus day weekend for the Army game. Has anyone heard what might be planned? The fall on the Cape is the best time of year...great weather and no summer traffic.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Yes, Colorado College is coming to Starr (revealed on an October or November Coaches Show) in a few years though I don't have an exact date.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Had to go through my recycled paper pile to find the flier for the Cape Cod Classic but yes, tickets are available at the Colgate ticket office right now.

$12 for adults, $8 for children.

I believe the game will be played at the brand new Hyannis Youth and Community Center. Wikipedia lists the capacity for the main rink at 1,500. The Cape Cod Cubs junior team currently uses the facility. Also...

McIntyre Signs With Lowell Devils
HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/19/2010) – Less than a week after his collegiate career came to a close, Colgate’s David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) has signed an amateur try-out agreement with the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League, it was recently announced.

Twelve games left on the docket for David to audition for next year. Ten of the 12 are at home.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Mac is not only auditioning for next year. He is auditioning to be added to the Big cubs playoff roster.

They think he can help them and he has 2 weeks to prove it. This would be awesome, he signed a very nice contract as well.

Thanks for all the research, jw. Obviously Vaughan's accolades are immeasurable and speak for themselves. Limited scholarships, graduation rates, facilities, support...it's evident the fans, players, school, and league are fortunate to have someone of his caliber and character. Besides, he is willing to raise his family and make his life in tiny, rural Hamilton - we'd better count our blessings. It's also great to point out that one of the team's biggest positives is the amazing coach.

I agree to a point about comparing the hockey team to other sports, partly due to the amount of games played in a season. The football team plays 10 or 11 (or more if we make the postseason) compared to 36 for hockey, give or take. But I'd also guess there is a bit more to football: the roster is significantly larger with several coaches??? But as far as playing ranked teams, I'd say that many Colgate sports are fortunate to compete against the nation's best, whether it's m/w lax, tennis, field hockey, soccer...just to name a few. Their seasons may be shorter but I can't fault them for that alone or say they don't work as hard.

On a side note, the Cornell women are playing for the national title. They, like Clarkson, have made a name for themselves in women's hockey even though I believe Colgate had it's team together before they did and we finished 8th. And then there's Union, of course, at the bottom of the barrel - again. When do any of you see the women making it to the top of the league?

Watched the DIII tourney online from Lake Placid - some exciting games. Was hoping Plattsburgh would take it. At least they didn't have an Albany River Rats logo at center ice like the ECACs in Albany.

Congrats DMac!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

DMac update...Played alot Fri and Sat games...played on the powerplay both nights and one shift on the penaltykill also. Game today at four I believe too !

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Does Austin Smith have a shot at the NHL someday? or would that be a stretch? I see he had another good season goals wise.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Anybody know of any ECAC players leaving early to sign pro contracts this year?

INCH has a good running list of all college players who've signed pro contracts here: http://insidecollegehockey.com/7Archives/News/0910/prosignees_0910.htm

It does differentiate between seniors and players who left early. It doesn't look like any ECAC people have left early as of yet. Will they? Possibly someone highly-drafted like Harvard's LeBlanc, but that's idle speculation at best, and only if the NHL team in question feels as though their development would be better served in the minors or with the big club. In other words, probably not likely, though you'd have to ask other teams for their potential early leavers. Obviously Cornell and Yale are still up in the air as their seasons have not yet finished (and there's some real talent on those two teams)

Well, he came in as a draft pick from the Stars, so at some point they'll have to make a decision on him. His biggest weakness is his size, which unfortunately for him is unlikely to change. His scoring sense is pretty strong, so I have to think the Stars will give him a fair shot, but probably not until after he uses all his eligibility

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

TVR - I thought MVT signed on with someone. Wasn't he a senior? (too lazy to look it up...:D ) Didn't see him on the INCH listing.

Well, I'd say the list is good, but not comprehensive

For example, McIntyre doesn't appear on it, but we know he's signed with the Devils org.

I'm fairly certain MVT is a Senior, which means I'm glad to say we won't be seeing him again ;)
