Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Hey, that was a great game tonight and a hard-fought series. Much closer than the 2-0 result. Colgate skated their butts off tonight and played another strong game. Could have gone either way again.

Have a good weekend, and we'll see you next season.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Very disappointing to see a continuation of stupid defensive lapses continue tonight and, in effect, end the season. I can go through the list, but what's the use? Four times we played SLU this year and were either tied or in the lead after two periods; result? ZERO wins, FOUR losses...not good...we'll miss Jason Williams and Ethan because they played on a full sheet of ice and tool their defensive responsibilities seriously. You simply can't give a team like SLU (let alone Cornell or any other decent team) three silly goals and expect to win. Next year I hope we see an upgrade in team speed and a higher level of competition in goal. I don't believe 15-15-6 is anything special, but the kids, especially the seniors, gave it 100% on most nights and that's all you can expect. Unfortunately, it's a sad way to end a season that was looking better and better by a series of mental and physical lapses. We worked our tails off for three goals and gave the Saints three freebies. Their goaltender was very solid. I frankly hope they win it all in Albany...

Thanks Tim. But how can we have a good weekend after we lost twice???

rvd5star69, that was an awfully rude comment. I tried to neg rep you but apparently need to leave a comment for that and I can't find the right words to say.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Re: tonight's game. I am frustrated and disappointed. Utterly utterly disappointed.

We had leads of 2-0, 2-1, and 3-2, but ultimately selfdestruct and lose the game, and the season. I honestly thought our go-to guys looked in the mirror and took over, and also thought we were following the "script" of the 2008 playoff series against the Saints. We even scored THREE power play goals after scoring ZERO in our 1st 3 games against the Saints this year.

Then the world came crashing down on us. THREE goals against in the last 20 minutes. A bad turnover leads to goal #2 for SLU. Then the 4th goal that put the nail in our coffins looked very "soft" -- honestly I've rarely had confidence in Evin until he "won" the starting job and he really let us down tonight. I won't be surprised if one of the incoming goalies for next season steals the starting job from him.

What a bitter way for the seniors to end their careers. McIntyre, Cox, and Williams will be missed most of all. They honestly played like there was no tomorrow. The season as a whole was successful, but with a horrible finish.

Okay I'm finished venting. In a few days I'll try to post some optimism re: next season. At least tonight I had fewer technical difficulties with the B2 video, and fortunately it included 'Gate Radio's broadcast -- was hoping to do the same tomorrow but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. :(

He said the same thing last year after your season ended and you guys finished 4th, just ignore him. Gate always finds a way to finish in the top half of the standings. Sorry to see your season end, I was pulling for you. I look forward to heading to Starr next year to see if RPI can break our little losing streak in Hamilton. ;)

rvd5star69...you'll not only be wrong next year, you're a boor...please do us all a favor and re-enter your rathole...

So do I!!:D As I said on the scores thread, I wish there was a way for both Gate and SLU to be going to Albany. Don Vaughan will always be a part of the Saint family and Terry Slater before him was too. You had some great players in that class and the league will miss them too.

I personally wouldn't be too down on the goalie...the only goal I might blame him on was the game winner tonight and I don't think Evin thought Raley was going to shoot. Colgate always finds a way to get some great players.

I for one am really grateful this didn't go three games. That would scare me way too much.

Appreciate the class fans from Colgate. They were two competitive games that could have gone either way.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Ouch!! Don't condemn a whole teams fans for one BS comment.

I don't think he was.

I don't think we finished 4th but I get your point.

The post-season letdown is the worst. I wouldn't have had much confidence in Albany but would have been thrilled just to be there. Bigger and better things are waiting for us in Atlantic City. Good riddance, Albany.

Thank you, Colgate

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

First of all, rvd5star69 is a complete idiot when it comes to hockey. Secondly, sad to see your season is over. I watched a few games down the stretch and really thought you would make some noise in the playoffs, since you went into the last weekend of the season needing to win to get a bye, and you did that.

I thought your goaltending was very inconcistent this year and you did not match up well against St. Lawrence all season long. For whatever reason, some teams just don't match up well against other teams. Maybe it has to do with the SLU team wanting to show the SLU alum that he has something to be proud of; who knows.

You have some good young players to continue to make some noise in the ECAC next year. You can't replace a guy like McIntyre, however, it will give others the opportunity to shine. Consistency between the pipes is critical!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Thanks to those Colgate fans on this thread who have wished us well. I sat at tonights game next to two Colgate fans (one wearing a Jersey) and they both were civil and we shook hands and wished each other well at the end.

Your players and team have nothing to be ashamed of. Both of those were very hard fought games that easily could have gone either way. Frankly I thought your team outplayed us tonight and had much more jump and effort than we did. (Particularly in the first period)

Both teams missed some grade A chances and Tisi again came up big. While I agree goaltending was the difference Evin did stop two breakaways by Vermeulen, but I do agree a couple of our goals were of the softer variety while your three PP goals were very well executed and I'm not sure Tisi had a chance on any of the three.

The crowd did seem bigger tonight and noisier which was good to see.

Best of luck next season and by the by (the officiating was absolutely horrible tonight both ways. Penalties that weren't called and one's that were called that were ridiculous). Your team fought hard tonight and with a bounce and save here or there we would be playing a game three tomorrow night.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Right now my brain is fried and I have nothing to offer. Maybe in time I'll come out of the doldrums....:( The horror, the horror...

Thanks Got 6, critsports, TimU, and other SLU posters for the positive comments on this thread. There didn't seem to be much chippy play in this series, as befits two teams (and institiutions) that respect each other. Just good hard play by both sides.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

And with that, another hockey season comes to an end. It's really hard to believe where the last three years have gone. I feel like I was driving down to Hamilton to meet Bob Cornell, Michelle Kelley and Coach Vaughan just the other day. Of course Bob now is retired, Michelle works in the Albany area and helps out at Union and well, Don is still the head coach.

Tough way to end the season last night but I think given what was lost from last year and all of the question marks at the start of the season, a 15-15-6 mark, fourth place finish in the league and a first round bye certainly are the signs of a successful year in my view. While I know that the goal of this group was to compete for a national championship, what was accomplished is still a big deal for a team that did not have a clear number one starter in goal at the beginning of the year, had four first-year defensemen and three others with just about one full season each of hockey and an offense returning that had barely managed 89 goals in 38 games. Plus, it was a team that had had a hard time winning and scoring that big goal the year before, playing in 19 OT games. While the six seniors will be missed, I would say that Colgate should be right in the mix for home ice in the opening round of the playoffs next season.

But, as is listed on someone's profile (I forget who as I write), there are well over 200 days until the next time the team takes to the ice - which I believe again will be against Army on Cape Cod. There are also trips on tap for Lake State and Robert Morris that I know of plus a holiday tournament (can't reveal which just yet) but that is all I know right now.

Thanks to everyone for another great year and I look forward to seeing some of you at the team banquet. That said, I'm not terribly sure if I'll be around next year or not. There's a lot of different factors involved, nothing really though to do with the actual team or the staff - who have been great to me since day one. But, we'll see at this point. Thanks again everyone and good luck to the six ECAC teams still playing.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Always had a lot of respect for Coach Vaughn and Colgate's program. I Like to see Gate do well too because you guys are another small school. I remember rootin for both back in 2000 when you had Michigan. Congrats on a fine season and look forward to battling with you again next year. As far as having good teams you never know what to expect each year in ECAC, your team may be a surprise next year.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Was at the game last night. Not much to add to what others have said. We just couldn't seem to get all the pieces to work at the same time, not just in this series but for the whole year. Friday night we get solid defense and goaltending and no power play. Last night we go 3-7 on the PP, which usually is more than enough to win, but our D and goaltending weren't there. And I'm stll trying to figure out how the 4th SLU goal got in the net. I was sitting at that end - it looked like Evin whiffed at it with his blocker? Whatever.

SLU did a real nice job on the forecheck, forcing our D into turnovers, as evident on the 2nd goal. But when we went up 3-2 I thought for sure we'd win the game.

I was pleasantly surprised at the attendance - nice crowd. It looked like there were a lot more than 1122 people in the building.

It's tough to lose 2 close games but we have to say that the team had a very good year. We jumped from 9th to 4th in the standings - a nice improvement. But we have big shoes to fill with McIntyre leaving. Our entire defensive corp will be back and hopefully will be better with this year's experience behind them. But goaltending will still be a question. Has Bessette been given a fair shot? I'm not sold on Evin.

The goaltender coming in from the USHL should contend for playing time. He won a gold medal with Team USA at the World Jr. A Challenge last year.
