Re: Colgate 2009-2010

All right, some even better news: the peerless prognosticators on this very forum have picked SLU in a landslide (so far)!
Can 80 extremely knowledegeable hockey fans be wrong? Or at least 42 of them?

Presumably they picked Brown over RPI? :p

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Good work Saints! Seniors continue to get it done.

But if memory serves me correctly, haven't we been here before with Gate?! FINISH THE JOB TOMORROW BOYS!

And tip of the cap to Brown, what a win

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I had a gut feeling that we would be in this position tonight. At least we didn't lay an egg like we did in Game 1 of the 2008 1st round against this same team.

Bold prediction for tomorrow:
-McIntyre, Cox, Williams et. al. will lay it all on the line tomorrow. I'm sure they don't want their careers to end abruptly.
-2 years ago after St. Lawrence defeated us in Game 1, Coach Vaughan said in a post-game interview, "we need our go-to guys to look in the mirror and take over." That's what we need to do now.

3rd year in a row we've been in this position. We've always had a knack for having our backs against the wall early, then responding appropriately.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

It wasn't for lack of hustle that we lost tonight. I saw emotion and gritty play on the part of both teams. SLU is fast and shifty, also had some good spinarama passes, however we had our chances...just not enough of them.

I like how we're breaking out of our zone now...a definite improvement from the middle of the season. If we get some good bounces tomorrow we should be able to even this series. As GR pointed out, we almost always lose the first game in these 2-out-of-3 series to SLU.

Perhaps the difference in the game was the absence of our Pep Band. It seemed that the cowbells and drum beating "out noised" our locals, faculty, and what students were still around, despite pretty good attendance for our side...

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Thought the difference tonight was very, very slim. Both teams played a close game. Differnece to me was Tisi.....he played outstanding.

It's almost one and I have Q Pac/Union in the 5th OT if you can believe that!!! They said another minute and a half and it will be the longest game ever in college hockey!!!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

The difference was SLU going 1-6 on the PP and Colgate was 0-6. And Mike McKenzie continues to be Mr. Clutch for his team with another huge goal.

Wow. This "new generation" of pep band students absolutely don't give a $**t about hockey. All they care about is going home, FL, Mexico, etc.

I honestly thought we were "in it" the entire game. The 1st SLU goal, Evin would definitely want back, and the 2nd SLU goal, well, we took a bad penalty at a bad time ... again. Otherwise, give credit to SLU's goalie (Tisi), as he stopped TWO 1st-period breakaways.

Hopefully the B2 video stream (A) won't have technical difficulties tonight and (B) have audio as well. I tried listening to the 'Gate radio broadcast alongside the video but it was 20 seconds behind...

Also, we're 1 of 3 home teams that lost last night. Union broke its own record of playing in the longest NCAA game ... and lost again.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

The "new" video feed was a pain in the *** for yours truly; btw, a great time to introduce us to this new technology. When I first accessed the game I was able to get John McGraw doing the play-by-play simultaneously with the game. Five minutes later the audio went blank. I hope one telling statistic doesn't bite us in the *** to end the season: after 35 games McIntyre has TWO power play goals. Don't get me wrong; he is the heart and soul of this team right now and has been a tremendous asset to the program (and probably will get a very good look in the NHL). I don't know exactly what it is - nagging injuries, certainly some bad luck - but in many respects he's had a tough year. In addition, the officials overall don't seem to give him much of a break. Nonethless two PP goals (and only 11 overall which includes at least two empty netters) has got to be killing him. For the team's sake (and for his because he deserves it) I'd love to see him score several times over the next game or two and take us to Albany. It ain't going to be easy. Marsh probably knows this team as well as any coach in the ECAC and he's had answers for three games now...

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I only listened to the radio. It sounds like we played a good game, but Tisi made some big saves, especially early, and SLU convereted the big PP late in the game. A pain, but that's par for the course in Game 1 against SLU

Time to follow the script again: gritty Game 2 victory to set up a tough Sunday night

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Tisi was on his game last night and stoned us. D-Mac had a good open chance, but couldn't convert...Tisi made some amazing saves (I was sitting with the SLU crowd right behind the goal..:o )

I hear you Greencoat: D-Mac can be super, but often overlooked is Cox, who played his heart out last night and brings a certain something to this team. And Jason Williams is always playing 100% IMHO.

Strange thoughts for the day: will Niagara's upset of Bemidji State have implications for any ECAC bubble teams, like Union?.....Union again involved in the longest game in NCAA history. ...Brown takes it to Yale; is Bruno for real?...is Yale suffering from the "Sean Backman effect"??

'Gate has to come out with a gritty performance tonight - no penalties in the last 3 minutes of each period, and gotta convert on the PP. I know D-Mac is being whacked and punched around by SLU, but he seems to be in the box alot. He needs to turn the other cheek, for the good of the team.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

McIntyre ... is the heart and soul of this team

He may need to put the team on his back tonight and, hopefully, on Sunday. He's more than capable of doing that.

In addition, the officials overall don't seem to give him much of a break
He has the most penalty minutes on the team, twice as much as anyone else. Everyone complains about how much abuse he gets. While that may be true, he's a captain and our best player and we need him on the ice and not in the box. He had 3 penalties last night - way too many in such a big game.

You beat me to that one by a few minutes, Colskate! That's what I was trying to say.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Jeez...it was like Murphy's Law last night up in the press box.

The stats computer went down right before or after the first period goal by Aaron Bogosian and it couldn't be salvaged, at least last night. So, the game stats were mostly composed by hand and then inputted manually once another working laptop got up to the press box.

B2 apparently went nuts as well and reading about the crap video/audio on here proves that. B2 did send someone out to set up the equipment on Thursday but there was no on-site tech last night so once the problems started, not really anyone knew what to do. There was no direct input for my radio mixer so the home audio on B2 was a microphone positioned in front of me to pick up sound - obviously it was pretty low. We tested some different things afterwards and think we may have the problem solved tonight - we'll see I guess.

St. Lawrence: 5-0 in game one vs. Colgate, 0-3 in game two's at Starr Rink vs. Colgate. The Raiders haven't dropped back-to-back games since the Quinnipiac-Yale debacle early last month and are much better on Saturday night's (9-4-2) than on Friday's (6-6-4). One troubling stat is 0x18 on the power play against St. Lawrence this season, a team coming in that was just over 78 percent overall. Mike McKenzie 7-6-13 vs. Colgate in his career, at least three game-winning goals.

The question for tonight is...who plays the role of Tyler Burton and puts the team on his back? Someone talked about Coach Vaughan's comment about looking in the mirror two years ago after the game one stinker. Burton did that, barely sleeping the night before game two and then simply took over the next two games to push Colgate to the quarterfinals.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Very entertaining game last night...could have gone either way...but didn't go our way. Tisi, to me, is the difference. I thought he stoned Gate in the first...two breakaways and a three on two with Mac and Smith. We easily could have had a lead after one, he was tremendous.

Evin played very well but the one mistake cost us the game. SLU has our number this year obviously but I expect another nailbiter tonight. Our forwards couldn't finish last night, soo many chances, you gotta feel for Mac...but he MUST stay outta the sinbin tonight. I really thought we had more quality chances last night.

What is wrong with Kotyra...I have never seen so many ref conferences in a game before. Then he talks to Marsh for five minutes....they looked so confused. A travesty !

Well, SLU is now 10-0-2 when scoring the first goal. Colgate is unbeaten in ten playoff series dating back to 1989. We've lost the first game with SLU, is it four or five series str8. Something has to give or season's over. We've done it several times, win one period at a time and just "Do It."

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Having been there last night I have a couple of observations ...

McIntyre had a breakaway in the first period and was either hooked or was interfered with, but no call. He went nuts, and, after that was called for 3 minors, 2 of which were very questionable.

Cox played really well, Smith also. Firrman did pretty well on the checking line. Day and Brisebois not so much. Mac worked very hard but had little to show for it. Sean Carty - one shift - SLU goal - benched.

The crowd according to the box score was 1065, but appeared to me to be much more than 3/4 filled - way more than half anyway. But still, a pretty quite crowd. There was a cowbell somewhere in the reserved sections, but I only heard it before the national anthems.

SLU beat us at what is usually one of our strengths - digging and cycling along the boards. They outworked us.

Our line changing was often times done when they had the puck moving towards our zone, we almost got caught a couple of times. We also looked like maybe we were a little tired. We should certainly be able to 'out physical' them.

SLU had several one timers toward the net, mostly aimed at the far posts - that got through, we had several big wind up attempts where they had time to adjust/clog and block. Frankie Bris had a dinky little snap shot that he sort of shanked late that went through some legs and went wide -- a one timer that almost got lucky. Many of our shots were right in Tisi's gut.

Tisi made at least 2 outstanding saves.

Territorially, I'd say they had a slight advantage.

All 4 officials had a bad night. Linesman waved off several SLU icings, a couple of questionable calls on Mac, and a few conferences that made tv time outs look short.

As somebody said in one of the other posts ... Mac, Day, Smith, Frankie, Cox, Williams ... time for you boys to step it up and play for keeps.

Go Gate!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Welcome aboard Go Gate 3747 :)

If D-Mac is everyone's target, it's working. His points are low and his trips to the box are high. Everyone's got his number for a reason and we need to have Vermuelen's and MacKenzie's tonight. We also need to come out firing, score first, and hold the lead. We can't put our hope in special teams b/c they've proven to be unreliable. Although our lines are playing their hearts out, none of this is an easy task against a great SLU team.

Was hoping our extra rest would help, but the first result is the same. Three out of 4 bye teams losing last night proves that a first-round bye may not be all it's cracked up to be when your opponent has nothing to lose. This is postseason pride and desperation hockey right now. Colgate tends to improve as the game wears on but by then it's often too little, too late.

It's salt on the wound when we're the higher seed and lose in our own barn. Let's hope Friday was our gimme game. They may have beaten us this season but we'll turn the tables when it matters most and steal the show.

GO GATE!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

As a followup to Go Gate 3747's remarks, yes, the attendance figure of 1065 seems way low. The seats were filled more last nite than at any other game this season, with the possible exception of Cornell. Seeing as we had no students on campus, I think 'Gate did a good job of getting a crowd out.

I watched warm-ups and SLU came out with a jump in their step that I did not see in 'Gate's pre-game skate. That worried me immediately. I thought the Clarkson series would have worn them down a bit, but they were flying from the get-go. We need to have the 'energizer bunny' in us tonight.

GR - I wondered why your post-game show was so short. Now I know.

Suck it up tonight guys; leave it all on the ice.
