Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Have to be impressed with the way SLU won last night, being 5 minutes away from having their season ended at home by their arch-rivals. But their top guys came through at the end. They should be flying high, and they won't be coming into an intimidating building next weekend.

We'll need our top guys to come through for us the same way SLU's guys did. It will probably come down to which goaltender plays better - I guess it usually does.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

SLU is always a great intrastate opponent and I think there is respect and admiration on both sides. The Saints will likely feel like they're playing at home because they're at Starr so often - and so are their fans :-)

Noone has mentioned the fact that SLU has played 3 extra games...I've never considered that as much of a factor as, say, adrenaline or motivation, but should the series go to 3 it could work in our favor.

Whether we were to play SLU, RPI, or Qpac, we need to get the job done. RPI proved that penalties killed them during the playoffs. SLU proved that MacKenzie and Vermuelen need to be stopped, and Quinny has Wong & Lampe (I wish they'd graduate already). Any goaltender can be hot on any given night, even in frigid Starr. All the Raiders can do is give it their best and play smart hockey on their way to Albany :)

Good Luck Raiders!

Actually, SLU has played four more games :)

There's the three playoff games from this past weekend plus an extra non-conference game to give them 38 total.

Bill, Your right about watching some of SLU's key players, and I'm certain that D.V. and staff will be working that into his gameplan, however, I am also comfortable with our key players, and what they will contribute to the up coming series.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I am comfortable, too. And I am proud of our 4th line for making a name for themselves and stepping up just as much as the seniors.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Well, SLU just played a very tough, physically and emotionally draining series, and I'm sure they're bruised and tired. The good news is they should be totally relaxed. The senior class just played their last game at Appleton, against Clarkson, in the playoffs, and went out with a flourish. Sunday night's game is going to be part of SLU hockey lore. Everything else now is icing on the cake.

Starr is a tough place for us, and Colgate is always a very difficult opponent. I think the teams will test each other's limits this weekend. I'm looking forward to it - it's all bonus hockey now, and this season is a success no matter what happens from here on out.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Been out of town for the past 2 days. Just got back to find out we're playing SLU next weekend (again). Even though we've historically been able to win decisively against the Saints at Starr, keep in mind we haven't beaten them in 2 years. If history repeats itself we'd have our backs against the wall come Saturday only to force a Sunday game then win it. Hope the band shows up, but given the fact that Spring Break starts for the students this Friday, I'd probably be dreaming  ... especially since SLU fans tend to pack the end seating in our barn. Still, I'd rather have them over RPI or Quinnipiac, but we'll have to play our best hockey of the season so far this weekend.

How about Brown??? Who'da thunk they'd end RPI's season? And Harvard playing Cornell in Ithaca? The fish will be flying there, and the fans will be roaring. Should be another wild weekend in the ECAC :D

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

from B.C.... good luck to the gate in the E.C.A.C quarters and good luck to Coach Fogarty '95 in the NCAA's with his Adrian hockey team.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Ditto to everything that's been posted. We need to jump out of the locker room and get right on SLU in the first period.

Looking forward to a great (rainy) weekend of hockey..:)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I"ll take rain over snow anytime. I'm sure our troops are getting well prepared for this weekend. With D.V., being a candidate as ECAC coach of the year, and our seniors wanting to leave on a positive note, I can only imagine the motivation level to prove to many, that the Colgate program is alive and well.

If we advance to Albany, I can't imagine given the number of Underclassmen in the program, how D.V. cannot win COTY.

I am tired of reading other posts about Starr Rink, and while it may not be of the upscale version of some other schools, we continue to attract great student athletes. If athletes choose to go to some other schools, they may not have had the qualifications needed at Gate.

Listen, the Ice surface at Starr is as good or better than many other rinks we have been at this year, and watching a game at Starr isn't all that difficult. No, it is not modern, and I agree with that issue, however, the school produces amongst the highest income per student in the country after graduation, with a graduation rate for our student athletes also amongst the highest in the country.

Not bad, for a small school in Central N.Y.

Lets get out and support the program this weekend, and win or lose, we will have had a very good season considering all the new faces. SLU is an enviable foe, and they too have had a very good season considering the turn over of players they too went through.

We cheer the players and the program on. GO Gate.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Interesting post, Doghok. The stuff you mention reminds me a lot of an even-smaller school in northern NY. Personally, I've always had a soft spot for Colgate, since they offered me a scholarship--but I'm not unhappy that I chose SLU instead. Of all the other schools in the ECAC, though, I think Colgate is the closest in spirit to SLU, and yes, your coach is a worthy candidate for CoTY--a lot more so than Allain from Yale, who had the powerhouse coming in.
So good luck this weekend: I hope your guys play well, do your school a lot of credit, and then lose. But not badly.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

We got a couple votes in Monday's poll. Kinda silly, but nice recognition.

Good luck this weekend, boys!!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

It's always fun playing SLU. Their fans are great and we play the same, fast game. Joe Marsh is a gentleman and wonderful coach as is our own Donnie V. It will be a great weekend of hockey!!!!!
I think the Athletic dept. is doing a good job of trying to get fans into the rink for the games (giving all fac/staff one free ticket) and together with the Alumni office and Silver Puck, putting on a great tailgate prior to Friday night's game......in Cotterell Court.....price is $13/per person.
Let's get it done, Raiders!!!!!! Go 'Gate!!! And btw, our athletic graduation rate is #1 in the country!!!!!

Not to start stuff (there's been enough of that between Brown/RPI lately)... but can I please get the source for that?

Should be another dandy of a series between these two schools who have seen each other probably more times than either really cares for in the past decade. We are certainly owed a bit of karma in the series of late, hopefully we will get some good vibes sent our way from the Big Man this weekend.

And God help me if Kotyra or John Murphy has the bands this weekend.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

OK...starting to get pumped here...hope everyone else is also !! We should be rested up and pretty sure we're healthy.....no excuses, it's time !

Since mid January we are 8-4-2.... 3-0-1 in our last four. We seem to be playing our best hockey of the year at precisely the right time....playoffs !

We are home...have to win one series, what more can you ask for ? The only negative is the rink will be prob about half full and the SLU rooters will make more noise than the Gate sit on u'r hands fans. Hopefully it won't matter.

We've scored twelve goals in our last three and eighteen in our last four, only two goals per game against in the last three. The key will be our young defenseman making good outlet passes and Evin making the saves he should make. SLU's goaltending is excellent and they are explosive. Glad we got Kotyra for all the games ! Can't wait !
