Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Looks as if 2010 is starting off the same way as the beginning of the year. Sullivan has again picked us to lose both. Well, if not anything else, he's consistent.
I fully anticipate a far better outcome, as we are well rested, and hopefully recovered from injuries.
As this conference schedule continue's, its hard to predict whom will win on any given night, however, I do feel that this team has as good a shot as any this year.
Good Luck in the north country.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Glad to hear we're healthy...hope that means everyone ! I haven't seen a live game in seven weeks..hope our scheduling is never again like this.

We definitely need a split this weekend...6-4-1 would be a fine start at the halfway point with scheduling favoring us at home after this weekend. Not much to say...feels like ages ago for hockey !

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Agree with Shabby. It's been a long time between slices of pizzza at Starr Rink. Think we have a chance to make some noise this half if everyone is healthy.

BTW, where is Jesse Winchester? I see he didn't play in last night's Ranger game. Is he on the DL? Or get traded? I've been out of the loop the last few days...:(

Winch is out of the line-up with a lower body injury. He may show up in Canton tonight with other Grad's. Here's hoping !

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Agreed. I'll be happy with at least a split. After this weekend's games we have 7 of the next 9 at home, and we're a respectable 4-2-2 at Starr this year. SLU will be a difficult test; Appleton has never been an easy place to play for us (though we were able to win there in the 2007-08 season), and Cheel ... well, I hate playing there too but we've only lost once there in the last 7 years, and that was a 1-0 decision in the 2008 ECAC quarterfinals.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Nothing to say other than what started as a season with potential has quickly evolved into a bottomless pit. Our scorers have vanished and when the game is on the line in the 3rd we are no where to be found. Coach Vaughan seems completely unable to do anything about it and I'm wondering whether or not they are even listening to him. mad:

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I listened to the game tonight, and at the end of it all I felt like I was sucker-punched in the gut. It hurts. It still hurts. We were playing a respectable road game until about 7 minutes left in the 3rd, when it became 2-0 SLU. Then the wheels fell off and we packed it in. This is the 4th year in a row where I'm excited for the hockey season only for it to reach a point where we're finding ways to lose games. Laying a goose egg just seemed to put an exclamation mark on the meltdown, especially since we killed off a 5-min. major plus a 2 min. 5x3, and Long was making some spectacular saves in the 1st two periods.

Just rest up and focus on tomorrow. A win at Cheel isn't out of the question, but I just don't want this winless skid to continue.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

A split would be a gift. At this point, staying out of the box is a real problem. Maybe the puck didn't bounce our way - but it certainly didn't bounce toward the SLU net enough with only 20 shots. Still rotating goalies and falling apart in the third. It's not just frustrating, it's heartbreaking. Another year with uninspiring play and working our way down to a lackluster finish. The intensity at Starr is nowhere near where it used to be in the late 80s/early 90s and I miss it terribly. Would be satisfied with splits at home; Robert Morris not looking like a pushover and we don't need another Canisius debacle.

You're right, Shabby & Rainman - hopefully we can build off our record at home and being 6-4-1 at this point would be somewhat encouraging. We've got scholarships and draft picks - just don't get it. Where are Stan Moore and Andrew Dickson when you need them.

Go 'Gate

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Stan Moore? I don't think he is the answer. Look at his record at Providence. It can't be all Tim Army's fault. He was here for a lot of lean years and did the recruiting for those years. Andrew Dickson will be missed, however, Dexter is doing a fine job recruiting (McIntyre, Day, McNamara, Bourdon, Price, to name a few. We played well last night for two periods, SLU played with a lot of emotion in the third. Long played well, but he isn't Dekanich or Silverthorn. Colgate is young, especially defensively. Be patient. Go Gate!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

If Dartmouth is able to beat Harvard on Tuesday, then I REALLY hope you guys win tonight. :)

As for scholarships and draft picks, just be patient. Teams don't win on talent alone; that was certainly true with RPI as well. The draft picks' time will come, and you'll be successful... in 20 of your 22 ECAC games.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I hear alot of frustration here, it's getting tough. It's hard for me to comment when I haven't seen them play in two months. The defensemen are young, yes, but where has our scoring gone ?? The third period used to be our strongest, are they tired by then, I don't know !

Last night was one of those games where with a little luck (or a little less Tisi), Colgate could have been up 2-0 after two periods. Had that happened, it might have ended 4-0 the other way. As good as Long was - and he was very good - Tisi probably had to stop more quality chances in the first two periods. The first goal was just one of those things: somebody had to score eventually, and it was a tremendous shot. Colgate still had energy at that point, but the second goal really deflated them.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I don't like the energy excuse or the deflated excuse. A good team needs to be mature enough to know that you are in any game. Especially only down by 2. It really is gut check time as far as I'm concerned. I can't blame this on the coach I have to look at team leadership.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Pretty much as I expected although I was spared the pain of listening (no disrespect to Gate Radio as he does a very good job calling a tough sport on the radio) due to a surprise B-Day event for another friend hitting 55. And frankly I'll take issue with my very informative friend Wahoo62: this is as much about coaching as it is about the players. Again, I didn't listen, but I wonder if the coaching staff used any timeouts after the first or (more importantly) the second goal. This type of meltdown has occurred too many times this year and we're now 20+ games into the season. There appears to be a shortage of mental toughness in this edition of Colgate hockey and both the seniors and coaches have to step up. When your overall talent is mediocre (and let's face it folks, although I love the effort that kids like Cox and Williams display, they would be a "*****ly" fourth line on many D-I programs) someone's got to lead. And what's up with Billy Rivelini - he was recruited a while back and, I believe, received a scholarship. I digress. I just hope we can host a first round playoff matchup as we seem to be (for the fourth consecutive year) a .450 team, unable to match up against quality D-I competition. BTW, having Cornell as your traveling partner for the past 20-some years has to be an advantage (albeit a small one). Union is passing up by and RPI will probably soon follow. I wish I could be more up beat, but resignation is replacing guarded optimism.

I wouldnt' either if I were you. I was just saying that Colgate did have some good scoring chances, might have had the lead on another night, and didn't appear to be tired. Throwing in the towel isn't OK. I will point out that SLU got drilled by Maine 10-1 a few weeks ago. Granted it was just one game, not a pattern, but a thrashing like that can be overcome.

Yes - I believe he called it after the first goal.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I'm inclined to go with TimU's analysis and give credit to their goaltender for keeping us off the board. But 0-6 on the PP was probably another reason we lost last night. Let's see how we bounce back tonight before we give up on the season.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I was only listening to the radio, but Tisi played a strong game. DV did call timeout after the 1st goal, and they played well after that. The quick transition leading to the 2nd goal seems to be what did them in

In some ways, it was reminiscent of the Princeton semifinal from 2008, where they peppered the goal all game, couldn't score, then suddenly deflated after the Tigers punched one in. Tough to listen to, undoubtedly tougher to watch

The lack of goals is starting to become a concern. We knew the defense was young, and would need support, and right now they aren't getting it. Who's going to step up? McIntyre, Day, guys like that need to start potting goals again. Right now, the team is definitely missing something, and someone's going to have to be the one to say "enough is enough." It's a long season, and you're going to go through stretches like this. It's how you respond, and they're not responding well as of right now

I'm not yet prepared to throw in the towel, even if the result is negative tonight. Lack of points on the North Country weekend isn't anything to get excited about, but not exactly a dealbreaker for us (or anyone else in this League). The schedule sets up favorably down the stretch (7 of the last 11 at Starr), but I really really want to see some real fight for 60 minutes tonight
