Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Rainman,

ENGs don't count as shots so if you were to count it, the ENG was the 21st shot. I thought the call on Prockow was a bad one and a bit of a homer call. Even if it was so, in such a tightly played game the last 5 mins should be treated like OT. Oh well, congrats to Cornell on the win and here's to picking ourselves up in 10 days @ Capital District.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Never easy to play at Lynah, and even harder to do it shorthanded and playing from behind. Someone can fill me in on our recent record against Cornell but it's not pretty. It feels even worse when we lose at home.

There are definite signs of improvement from last season, so much so that we're likely to surprise preseason predictions and finish out of the bottom third. But when it matters most against ranked teams, we fall short (Princeton notwithstanding; they're unranked now). In these games against the best of the best, our SOG has been low, our &$^@ penalties in the waning minutes of the period are predictably ridiculous, holding a lead is painfully difficult, and our heralded offense sputters. It's harder to play with the big boys and get the win, and even then it's not always convincing or consistent.

Great effort against great teams this weekend and it shows Colgate's no pushover. I predicted them to go 0-3, so that OT win against the Tigers was a great boost and showed a lot of character. RPI and Union will be a tough series on the road so I'm hopeful for a split...Go 'Gate.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

We are 1-6-2 since 06-07. Also, 30 shots at Lynah is not too bad, considering Scrivens is one of the best goaltenders in the country and right now, the best one in the league.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

FYI, I apologize to anyone that listened to the WKXZ broadcast of the game tonight, though judging by the game thread, not many of you did (RedCast instead). Lots of technical difficulties throughout the night including my microphone cutting out a generous amount and a five-minute span during the second period when we were off the air (during a PP and Brisebois' goal) that I didn't know about until after the fact. It's a problem with our equipment that hopefully will be fixed by the next game on Dec. 4 at Union.

GR - You did cut out during the game, but did a nice job as always. The IV's of Mike Harder were interesting, but the scratchy sound? - is that something you can work on with the equipment? Hard to hear what you and Mike were saying. Maybe it was my radio..

We held our own at Lynah, and except for a few bad breaks - penalties, not clearing the puck out of our own end - might have come away with a win or tie. Now that the team knows what to expect from the Red, maybe we can reversew the outcome in our barn.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

McIntyre was amazing until his injury. We're very happy to get out of that game with a win. Colgate filled the lanes and did a great job on defense.

Except for the late penalty, all the Raider penalties were directly the result of Cornell pressure, so I wouldn't blame them there. Gate did execute well on their powerplays.

This reminded me a lot of that spate of ties / near ties several years ago between these teams. I'm sure the next meeting will be just as close; good luck to Colgate until then.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I'm not sure, but it sounded like we could have won the game. Quinnipiac and last night, a late penalty cooks us !!! When will we stay out of the box ??
Last year we couldn't score on the PP and our PK was great....this year the opposite ! Still a pretty good start, prob best since 2005. Eat some turkey and rest up boys....alot of hockey left.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

The audio on the Harder interview sounds fine on my laptop though slightly scratchy on Mike's end at the beginning. At some point this weekend, I'll rip everything (Coaches Corner, other interviews, Highlight of the Game) onto a CD and then when I'm back from Thanksgiving on Tuesday I'll give that to the web site folks and that will be uploaded to the Podcast page. The good news is that everything is archived and saved so people will be able to listen to it that weren't able to catch it the first time - especially Mike's story about the quality of the refs in Europe.

As for the last two penalties last night that led to Cornell power play goals, I felt both were suspect. In the case of Larkin, he was battling Greening in the left-wing corner of the Cornell attack zone. Greening, who played great last night BTW, won the battle and stepped around Larkin to drive the net down the goal line. In stepping around Larkin, Greening fell down, maybe with a light shoulder or hip from Tom, but it should not have been a penalty. Prockow IMO deserved a penalty a little more than Larkin. He was jostling with Blake Gallagher in the offensive zone around the left-wing boards. Either the puck rolled free or they were skating after the puck, I forget which, and Gallagher obstructed/interfered with Prockow to prevent him from getting the puck. Prockow tried to get around Gallagher and ripped past him using an arm to toss him aside which is what drew the whistle. If anything, it's either a no call or Gallagher for obstruction interference.

A lot of things went uncalled both ways in the third as the officials put their whistles away and let the them play. That being said, Cornell suffocated Colgate on its' final power play, the Raiders weren't able to clear the zone and after about 45-50 seconds of sustained pressure, Gallagher finally drilled home a shot from the left circle.

Lots of time now to rest up and get ready for what should be a big weekend in Albany in early December. While Starr has been a house of horrors for Union, Colgate has not played particularly well at Messa recently, allowing 11 goals in its' last two trips to the Electric City.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Thanks for the interpretation GR. Sounds about like what you said on the play-by-play, vis-a-vis the penalties. Cornell sure did shut us down in the last few minutes leading to the final goal; pressure, pressure, pressure! We got to handle it better.

Yeah, that was pretty funny what Mike had to say about the refs in Europe..LOL

Hava a great T'giving everbody!

P.S. Gotta wait another 2 months to see a home game! That stinks!...

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Bump. This thread was almost on Page 3. Hope all the posters here had a great Thanksgiving.

Next week it's back to business. Union and RPI will be no pushovers, as the two teams played each other tonight with Union winning in OT 5-4. But the game was closer than the score indicates, as RPI was down 4-2 late in the 3rd and tied it up with 0.2 (yes, POINT two) seconds left.

We were swept last year on this trip, a sweep here would be a tall order but I'll be happy with at least a split. We've had some trouble in Schenectady recently and we can't let that happen again this year. Hopefully Day, McIntyre, and Larkin are all back at 100 percent with the extra time off this past weekend.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Brian Day is listed as questionable and may play this weekend. That's good news as I thought initially he was out till after Christmas.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Just a random alumni note to pass along since if I didn't post anything, I would probably forget this altogether. Class of 2003 graduate Scooter Smith is currently playing in the Southern Professional Hockey League with the Louisiana Ice Gators. While the Gators are having some growing pains in their first SPHL season, Scooter is among the league leaders with 14 points in 12 games played.

Louisiana I believe was the team earlier this year that made SportsCenter when its' coach/GM threw a fit on the bench during a game and heaved everything but the kitchen sink onto the ice. It looks like the first-year team has already been through a couple coaches and they're a month and a half into the SPHL season.

Thanks for the update GR. Sounds like the Bobby Knight of pro hockey..:o

Good for Scooter. Was always a hard player at 'Gate.

Congrats to TchrBill for again winning the weekly ECAC Pick 'Em. This guy is not only a brainiac but also has supernatural powers!..

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

TchrBill has once again picked us to get swept....he really does care more about winning a worthless competition than showing faith in his team...wow

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I honestly think TchrBill is using reverse psychology. Yes, he's only picked us to win once (vs. Brown), but he's 2-3-1 when picking against Colgate, and even ECACHL writer is once again picking us to lose both games, and he's 2-2-1 when picking against Colgate.

I'll be at Saturday's matchup against RPI, and will post my thoughts/observations sometime Sunday. Unfortunately, I won't be at tomorrow night's Union game partially due to the fact that last year I had an air horn blown in my face by an obnoxious Union student. (Plus last year's Union students were a bit unwelcoming to the pep band -- at least this year we're playing the Dutchmen in Schenectady while their students are on break :D )

So you're talking about the joker that kept running over from the Union student section and challenging you guys to fight?

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Welcome to Max Fenkell, a goalie from Exeter, who will be on the team next year. According to Heisenberg's report he's 5' 10" and 165 lbs.

Always good to get another guy in the nets....:)

Rainman: you can't be a wus and run away from idiots at Union! We need you at the game to give us a report.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

How do you know they're on break ?
Union is on a trimester system and in fact winter break has started. I am sorry about any inhospitable behavior displayed toward our visitors, that's not right but is hopefully an aberration. :o In the future, you may want to request tickets on the west side of the rink which is where we older guys sit, and are (generally) well behaved.

Good luck - tomorrow. :D

I AM NO WUS !!!!! :D

ColSkate, I live in SE Massachusetts now and Schenectady is a 3 hour drive for me. And I can't really afford a hotel room for a night either. That's why I won't be at tonight's game in person.

I am, however, making the drive to Troy tomorrow since it's an afternoon game and can get back home at a reasonable time of night. I will give you a report on that game. RPI fans are much more friendly (as well as their band).
