Re: Colgate 2009-2010
Now that I've fully digested the results of tonight's game, I might as well post my thoughts.
We outshoot the Red 13-4 in the final period only to lose. Cornell only shoots the puck on the net FOUR times in the 3rd period and scored twice (albeit one of them was an empty-net goal). That's an unfortunate bitter pill to swallow.
But IMO, watching the video from Cornell All-Access, we actually played a relatively even game with the Red. What proved to be the difference was taking two bad penalties -- one late in the 2nd and one late in the 3rd -- that both lead to Cornell power-play goals and ultimately losing the game. I'll give credit to the entire team though -- holding Cornell to 19 shots (the 20th was the empty-netter) can only mean one thing, the defense was alert tonight. The penalty kill still needs improvement though, as we've given up 6 power-play goals in the last 3 games.
Alex Evin played a very solid game in a tough rink for any visiting team to play in. I'm sure he'll probably get another start in at least one of the games at Union and RPI. He'll need to work on being more alert at the start and end of periods, as well as not letting a goal against get to him. Several times I've seen him give up a goal only to give up another one within the next 5 minutes. (Think: tonight's 2nd period, Lowell 3rd period, Princeton 3rd period, Army 3rd period, Yale 3rd period back in January.)
Some good news though, our power-play is coming around. We were TWO for four tonight against a team that usually has the best penalty kill in the league. Brisebois and Prockow are picking up right where they left off last Saturday against Princeton. If they can keep it up, we'll have a solid 2nd scoring line -- something we haven't had since at least the 2005-06 season!
I just hope Day's injury isn't too serious. With a 10-day break ahead of us, hopefully our banged-up players will have plenty of time to get healthy again. Finally, the Cornell radio broadcasters mentioned that McIntyre was limping in the 3rd. Hopefully this isn't too serious, and that having the upcoming weekend off will allow him to rest up.
We were able to keep Cornell in check at Lynah for most of the game. Here's to a win over Cornell at Starr this season...
