"The top?"

Still seemed to me that Oswego was a couple paces behind the likes of the "the top" in RIT, Plattsburgh, Middlebury, Norwich etc...

Re: Coaching vacancies 2012

Trinity and Amherst are two completely different programs. Amherst has 2 recent National Championships. That alone is a big role to fill for such young coaches. Duggan at Trinity was stepping into a much different situation. Not to take anything away from Trinity, because they are a very talented and strong team, but the current expectations at Amherst are those of a national powerhouse.

Pairing a first year asst. coach (who was a team member the previous year - certainly an adjustment period with that) and a young head coach together will certainly be interesting to see. Also two female staff members is a change (not good or bad, just different). With that said, it's clear Plumer left behind a great tradition and I'm sure Johnson will take much of what she learned from him and carry it on. Congratulations to them both and best of luck! Routing for you both!

Hearing news from informed Amherst folks that this is a moot point because Coach Johnson is no longer there as of late last week. Big surprise there - anybody else hearing similar rumors?

Re: Coaching vacancies 2012

If this is true this absolutely shocking. I think it is very unlikely.

I never have and never will claim to have perfect universal knowledge of all things hockey.

Re: Coaching vacancies 2012

Yup - its true!

What a rotten thing to happen to such a great program. I feel sorry for the girls if this is true!! May they find a good coach, but at this late date, that may prove to be a difficult task. Good luck the the Lord Jeffs!!

Confirmed via other sources. Coach Johnson is no longer at Amherst. Reason and who initiated it is unknown. No job posting, so maybe they have someone already on the hook as the coach?

Re: Coaching vacancies 2012

It seems like Gallinaro has enough experience just to get them through the season.

Could be - actually has more experience than Johnson I think. Still a surprise. Be interesting if Johnson shows up somewhere else shortly (D1 assistant ala Andy McPhee last year?).

Re: Coaching vacancies 2012

Has Amherst hired a coach yet?

It's only been a week since Johnson left. Unless they already had someone in mind, it will take some time. No posting on NCAA jobs board yet though so maybe someone is lined up already. I have heard that the Asst Coach is trying to keep the recruiting process on track. That will be tough with no clear direction, though - they'll probably miss the Early Decision kids and have to sort through who's left after the new coach gets in place.

Donnie Cahoon is sitting right up the road in a rocking chair. Would he want to do one more year of coaching and not have to move anywhere?

Re: Coaching vacancies 2012

that would be a great choice for them. The way he was talking in news articles during the summer it sounded like he was ready to move on from coaching,

News from the College on the Hill:

"Amherst College Director of Athletics Suzanne Coffey has announced the hiring of Jeff Matthews as interim head coach of the Lord Jeffs’ women’s ice hockey program."

https://www.amherst.edu/athletics/teams/winter/icehockey-w/articles/2012-13/1009_matthews

This will be an interesting transition for him - high powered boys prep school program coach and former Div 1 asst. coach to Div 3 women's head coach. I wonder why he would leave what appears to have been a successful coaching run at Northwood coaching their prestigious boys team to take an interim Division 3 women's college head coaching position. Since he is interim, they are clearly thinking that they will do a search for a permanent head coach after the season. Did see that he is relatively local to the area, so maybe there was a family draw.
