Climate Change 3: Whatever you do don't call it a twatwaffle

So I'm taking a first step into the EV world. I put a deposit down on the Toyota RAV4 Prime, their PHEV. 3-6 month wait list on it so it'll be a while, but hopefully by spring I'll have it.

30-40 miles on a full charge, and since it's a PHEV and not the full EV, I'll be able to slow charge it overnight with a normal 120v outlet.

Stupid n00b question: if you can only range 40 miles how do you take a trip? Do you use internal combustion for trips and electric for routine / close to home?

Yes, electric battery can last for 40 miles. It still has a hybrid gas engine you can use beyond that. (You can choose to just use the gas engine the entire time if you want, too, not that you would.) So it gives you the ability to go (close to) solely on EV for your daily commute and gas for long trips.

I'm currently close to 2800 miles on my current tank with the Prius Prime.

I doubt its dirt cheap if the load of millions of cars are added to "off peak" hours. All speculation until we see what the actual load is. I'm guessing the amount of gasoline sold in California on a average day is available somewhere. That could be converted to equivalent KWHs and that would be close to the load needed. I'd think it might be better for CO2 if cars charged during the day to make use of solar??

That's because ICEs are fucking TERRIBLE for efficiency. If they were as efficient as an electric motor, the exhaust would be slightly higher than air temp.

Since I work remotely, most of my driving will be well within the battery range, round trip. And in hybrid mode it still advertises 38 MPG, so when I do go to band practice or other distant things I'll be using a lot less gas. One of the biggest concerns I've heard from other PHEV owners is to make sure you run it in hybrid mode and get the ICE running once a week or so, if for no other reason than to make sure it exercises and cycles gas.

I was looking at plug in hybrids, they are pretty nifty. I would prefer full electric but there arent a ton of AWD electrics that are affordable and have a wide range yet. Of course in my current state of employ they probably will be more widely available when I can finally afford it since I don't have the money now :^(

(why must my school put incompetents in charge of the scheduling...but hey who needs money amirite?!?!)

Agreed, and I worry a lot about the incredible pace of change in the EV world. When batteries are swappable - or can be recharged in just a few minutes - that will be the sea change we're waiting for. Until then I'm concerned about resale value (I don't want to spend $50,000 on something that's functional but financially valueless in 5-7 years) and still concerned with charging availability on road trips (which is getting better and better).

The PHEV gives me a good, solid step into the EV world while still hedging my bet.

Gosh, wish we could do this here.

I live near four schools and every damn parent drives a car to pick up their special little flower who can’t ride the bus for some reason

At least here, you're only eligible for busing if you're more than 2 miles from an elementary school or 3 miles from the middle or high school. We're 1.25 miles. My wife will sometimes walk our daughter to school if her morning is open and the weather's ok, but otherwise we drive cause there aren't any other real alternatives and we both have to be at work.

Here it’s more than .7 miles you can get a bus, guessing our weather is part of that.

but plenty of the parents in my hood within a few blocks still have to drive their kiddos

I walked when it was a mile to elementary, then I biked when it was 3-5 miles in JHS and HS.

No way was I going to subject myself to you people on a bus.

I rode the bus one year when they closed my elementary school and I had to go somewhere else. Otherwise I walked. I was close to school except the two years of junior high that were a mile away.

I get that some parents have a need, the reason I moan about it is the traffic jams they cause for extended periods of time- the private school near me backs up so far it blocks highway access. The catholic school pop exploded last year when they remained in person through Covid
