Climate Change 2: Thank God for Global Warming

Re: Climate Change 2: Thank God for Global Warming

Amazing story being done on 60 Minutes.

Apparently the permafrost contains more carbon then all the coal and oil left to burn in the World. If it melts, we're doomed.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/siberi...-combat-climate-change-60-minutes-2019-07-07/

The arctic permafrost contains 1.8 million tons of carbon, more than twice as much as is currently suspended in the earth's atmosphere. Some of this will evaporate as methane, which is 34 times as powerful a greenhouse-gas warming blanket as CO2 when judged on the timescale of a century.

That is one example how the damage changes from an arithmetic to a geometric progression. Warming causes famine, drought, and melting among other things, all of which serve to accelerate the process through carbon release from the permafrost, reduced ability to slow the process because of deforestation, and on and on. If Trump and his followers would (or could) read, they would see the immigration effects drought, flooding, and ruined economies in the world's poorest countries will make today's immigration pressure seem like nothing in comparison. Add to that the political destabilization that will result from those same effects.

Federal court appointments, rollbacks in social justice, the risk of catastrophic foreign policy misstep--all those things scare most of us. But it may be that his deliberate attempts to slow down or reverse efforts to deal with climate change may be the biggest injury he inflicts, not only through his own efforts but through his message to others that IT IS NO BIG DEAL.

Another fun thing about the permafrost thawing is the release of bacteria that have long been held in suspended animation. Some of the bacteria we know how to fight, some we don't. It's super great.

Ya the bbc just had a thing on that. The plague was always coming back right??

No bees no planet no food. Goodbye Earth.

Earth will be fine. Life will be fine. Only plants and animals will be doomed. And we were just storage and transportation mechanisms for life anyway. We're failed technology.

If hungry we can eat people.... green strips of people

True, and I have no problem with that. It's just another reboot that will take a millisecond in time.

But those who suffer the most and the soonest will be those who are already suffering in the poorest, driest (and wettest) parts of the earth. And that suffering was both avoidable and largely the result of our own choices, even after we became aware of the facts. We have an obligation that is grounded on empathy and compassion, do we not?

Ok. Earth as we know it will be over. Either way, bye bye.

It's still the same monkey people who would rather have gold bars than see their fellow monkey people safe. The predations of the worst of us reflect on all of us. If nothing else we didn't flush the Republicans out of the gene pool in time.

Yeah, but your recent comments on this topic seem inconsistent with your usual reaction to Scooby's negative fatalism.

Or do I need to either read back or just take my nap.

I'm talking about the imminent extinction of the human race. Tell me where I'm being pessimistic.

I was sent here to study you. Not to root for you.

Which isn't likely to occur for......

In the meantime I have kids and eventual grandkids I'd like to not have to be subjected to having fewer and fewer habitable cities to choose from at a rate greater than what it would be if more people gave a s**t. We are not yet at that point of no return.

I have a daughter who if she'd get off her as-s might have children herself one day (husband's not gonna trap himself, honey). I'd like them not to live in a post-apocalyptic hellhole. As fun as burning the rich at the stake is going to be in 2025, that will just release more carbon into the air.

Re: Climate Change 2: Thank God for Global Warming

Those crazy Finns ...

They're claiming we're less than 10% of CO2 so we're a <10% burger when it comes to climate change.

NO EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE FOR THE SIGNIFICANT ANTHROPOGENIC CLIMATE CHANGE
...

The IPCC climate sensitivity is about one order of magnitude too high, because a strong negative feedback of the clouds is missing in climate models. If we pay attention to the fact that only a small part of the increased CO2 concentration is anthropogenic, we have to recognize that the anthropogenic climate change does not exist in practice. The major part of the extra CO2 is emitted from oceans [6], according to Henry‘s law. The low clouds practically control the global average temperature. During the last hundred years the temperature is increased about 0.1°C because of CO2. The human contribution was about 0.01°C.
...

Because the anthropogenic portion in the increased CO2 is less than 10%, we have practically no anthropogenic climate change. The low clouds control mainly the global temperature.

Re: Climate Change 2: Thank God for Global Warming

Honestly, ... sooner or later, ... yes.

See: Cholera, HIV, Ebola, TB, Zika, Lassa, MRSA, Marburg, SARS, et al.

Mother Nature just had some weak swings of late. She'll "go yard" soon enough.

It's incredible it's been so long. We are at, what, 100 years since the last true pandemic (Spanish influenza, 1918, 50M)? 35M from HIV/AIDS is barely 1M a year. That's in the noise for Mother Nature.
