Clarkson 2013 - 14

Re: Clarkson 2013 - 14

At various times we might have thought the team that would break the WCHA hold on the NCAA title would be Dartmouth, Brown, Harvard, St. Lawrence, UNH, Mercyhurst, Cornell, BU, BC... I would've named each of those teams at some point in time before I named Clarkson to do it. But here we are, and it's Clarkson. What a great achievement for Shannon and Matt and all the players. Shannon was on the SLU team that started Women's NCAA history with one of the greatest upsets there has ever been in the Frozen Four, and now here she is co-coaching the first ECAC team to win the title 13 years later. All the best to Clarkson.

....
I must say though, extraordinary sportsmanship by the Minnesota posters here on the thread! Well done fellas....I just wish some of our fellow brethren here on the threads would learn from your example.....
.....

I agree whole heartedly. One thing about the Women's threads is for the most part the conversation sticks to the topics and the give and take is civil. Not something you see on the men's side as often.

Re: Clarkson 2013 - 14

A very hearty congratulations to the Clarkson ladies and fans! I only saw period 3 but that was enough to see that you earned that win. I was really hoping for the three-peat, but not this time. Enjoy! See you next year.

Re: Clarkson 2013 - 14

Just got a tweet that if Union wins the D-I men's tournament that will mean that D-III schools will hold all the ice hockey titles.

Glad you mentioned this young coaching duo. I have watched the Clarkson program develop over the last few years and have been so impressed...just constant improvement every step of the way, but it was not until about the mid-point of this season that I started to believe they could win it all. Congrats to the Golden Knights!

Very good points and agree.

Kudos to this coaching staff and to the team to rise to the occasion when it counted. When I saw this team early in the year would have never guessed they make it this far. When I saw them again about 2 months ago, I saw a team that was ready for prime time. What a great way to finish of a great run late in the year. They rose up to the challenge, despite losing their star defense-men a few weeks ago in the ECAC semi final.

Re: Clarkson 2013 - 14

really nice to see a small enrollment school take down one of the larger ones....

If someone was going to crash the party exclusive to the "big three" I also like the idea that it was a small school...SLU would have worked too.

Re: Clarkson 2013 - 14

Speaks to the strength of the ECAC!!! As I said before, Union the team on the bottom of the ECAC gave them as good a game as any!!! In the last game of the regular season tied with Cornell for the top spot Union, at the bottom forced a overtime game "To a FULL strength Clarkson team" only to lose 2-1 in OT!!!! and the best part for that game was the announcer stating that the trophy was in the house in the second period! Congrat to Clarkson and the coaching staff for a well played game!!! and to Howe who should have been a KAZ top 10 contender!!!!

Re: Clarkson 2013 - 14

Good luck vs. the Eagles. Like to see Clarkson advance to the FF.

Ah, you got a minute?...I think we need to talk...it's about this nice exclusive party for the three of us that we had goin' on here for, well, forever,...you know, regular accolades flowing continually and we would just pass the baton around among the three of us in a game of keep away and the worst that ever happened was some of the perennial outsiders looking in got a little presumptuous and uppity but things seem to have taken a more serious turn and I was thinkin'...I noticed that there's an "edit" button here and if you would just go back and...

Nah. I thought Clarkson was the best team I'd seen outside of Minnesota when I watched them earlier this season. Since then they were the team I felt most likely to represent the east in a championship game. They were that team. The team I had hoped Minnesota would play if Minnesota made the final. Haven't changed my mind so no need to edit.

Were we still doing that? It got hard to tell when UMD stopped even showing up for the WCHA Final Face-Off on an annual basis, let alone making the NCAAs. But hey, no problem, Wisconsin is going to help, and they'll be on one side of the bracket and we'll be on the other, so a WCHA team will still have a good chance to win. Say, you don't think they'll have trouble with either Mankato or UND, do you?

Well, not anymore.

Hey, we backed away from the limelight to allow our friends an opportunity to bask in it. We had a gentleman's agreement...it was the only diplomatic and civilized thing to do.

And I think I've just had my "Clarkson" moment...I think I just figured out how to use that multi-quote function...I may not be able to sleep tonight!!! (Well, now that I look at it...sort of). And to have it happen when I was responding to you...the one who tried to explain it to me long ago...seems sort of like poetic justice.

Right... So it is no coincidence that the ECAC's best NCAA years, it has had 3 teams regularly in the upper half of the ten. In contrast, teams like 2008 Harvard & 2011/2012 Cornell dominated the ECAC in weaker years but failed to win in the Frozen Four.

I have never been big on the claim that the relative strength of the WCHA's bottom half was a big factor in its success, but now you have Clarkson winning the title in a year Union took them to OT, so I have to concede now it is at least a factor.

And don't forget that Brown and Clarkson skated to a tie, early in the season when Clarkson was a month into the season and the Ivy teams were just starting, giving more credence to the fact that the ECAC has more parity than ever before.
