CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11) BG

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

For all the debate we have here about where to put the BTHC tournament, I think we can all agree they need to break the bank on officiating.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

Congrats to WMU for winning the CCHA Playoffs. Three years ago, its Sr. class was part of a team that was an easy out of the 2009 CCHA playoffs going a whole period without a shot on goal in Yost. Two quality coaches later and hard work and good recruiting, this team captures the Mason Cup. A very tough team to play against.

WMU showed well in the NCAA's last year, and I think they can do even better this year, although a matchup with Union would be more favorable than North Dakota.

The CCHA refs...you can go on and on....I wonder what noise they thought that was when Tennyson or DeKeyser highsticked Wohlberg between the eyes behind the WMU net? The majors were excessive. If a guy gets a kneeing major while making an upper body hit, seems like that should be a game misconduct for a 5 for kneeing, but they let Merrill stay in the game.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

Merrill's major should have been a non-call, especially after seeing the replay. He didn't even move his leg, and O'Kane skated into him.

Western's major wasn't as bad, but not by much. That should have been a 2-boarding call, but no, Stevie Wonder and Roy Orbison came up with that to even things out.

That crew was so bad of an abortion, it ****ed off Planned Parenthood.

I've posted elsewhere a couple times that since we changed leagues that WCHA officiating has actually made me wish for CCHA officiating. After watching the third period of this game maybe I take all that back.

The third period was a disgrace and at least the announcers calling the game had the guts to say so, too. The first major wasn't even a penalty, period, and the 2nd one was hardly egregious enough to merit 5 minutes, particularly in that situation and under that set of circumstances.

As the announcers so succinctly put it during the broadcast in the middle of the third period, "The officials have managed to make themselves the focus of the game with bad calls" or words to that effect.

Seeing somebody besides Michigan win made my night, though.

With the automtic berth secured for Western and Michigan a shoe-in wonder how many CCHA teams overall make the NCAA's?

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

I hate Michigan losing, but there are times when I admire the teams they lose to, and this is one of those times. A good Western Michigan is good for college hockey, and this team has worked hard and greatly impressed in the past two years. The win was richly deserved. I'm glad we don't have to play you in the regionals, and I wouldn't be shocked to see you in Tampa.

Whether Michigan gets there is another matter. We'll see.

Why was that 2 on 1 whistled dead? The announcer said high stick, but that didn't make any sense unless I completely missed something.

And on the late waved off icing it looked like Michigan won the race but the linesman waited longer than usual to make a call. He waited so long that the WMU player eventually won the race, but it was down at the goal line.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

The officials went full derp for the last 15 minutes. I have no other explanation.

Well, at least it wasn't full frontal. :D

I must have missed the same thing you did. I originally thought offside, given that the whistle didn't blow until Western entered the zone, but then again on the replay, that wouldn't have been right, either.

Dumb***. Find him and whip that bare tush. That's irresponsible and poor sportsmanship. I hope Mr. G. (and you) realizes that the vast majority of us are not like that. I'd kick that idiot's bare butt if I was there. Or at least take a picture and spread it all over social media asking if anyone recognizes that rear.

I'm happy for Western, and a win over Michigan is certainly a rare event for us, and winning the Mason Cup has eluded us for 26 years. But this does not give Western fans the right to act like, or show their, a*******.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

I'd be worried if too many people actually recognize that rear. :D

B@WMU, good to see you're still floating around. You've been through a lot of ugly losses to Michigan, nice that you get to enjoy a mountain-top like this.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

The call on that play was high sticking. The puck was chipped up high by Merrill at the blue line, around head level, and then got knocked past him. I thought it was a hand or a head, but apparently the ref that blew the whistle thought it was a stick.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

Oh, I know they called it a high stick as pointed out by the announcer...I just didn't see anything remotely close to a high stick on replay (or live for that matter).

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

Given what we saw from the officials in the 3rd, I'm mildly surprised they didn't call someone for tripping.

I think the ref making that call was on the opposite side of the ice at the far blue line. Given that the other refs initially tried to put the faceoff at center ice, they probably thought it was a crappy call, too.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

Western made Miami look incredibly average tonight. I don't see UM beating them saturday. I see WMU winning 4-2, and ...well, who cares about the jv game.
I was pretty close here. WMU could have made it 4-2 easy enough. They were the best team here this weekend. Congrats on the Mason Cup.

Re: CCHA Championship Weekend: (2) Michigan, (3) Western Michigan, (4) Miami, and (11

So, yes, the Refs were horrific in the last period. And the linesmen, too.

And a Western fan showed and was an ***.

In the end, the right team won for the game. Wetern SO outplayed us last night that they earned that win pretty convincingly. Congratulations on the first CCHA title since your the 80's- you guys are on a serious roll.

The comeback was nice, but I knew we were doomed when our best line couldn't even try some great chances as they were totally gassed at the end of the game. Well, I knew the comeback was doomed- I figured it would be virtually impossible after going down 3-0 instead of scoring a late 2nd period goal like we did against BG.

Now it will be interesting to see what CCHA teams do in the tournament- I've not been overly stunned by the play I've seen on TV...
