CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Oh really? Why? As recently as a few years ago several state sport organizations did not even include the UP in their trophy, just a mitten.

Somebody would have set up a state school in the Soo.

* It also remains to be seen what happens to a school like Minnesota, who is used to having literally every game on TV across the region. Sure, 40 BTHC games on the B1G Network sounds great, but what if the Gophs go from every game on TV to half or less? How is that good for the program?

I'm pretty sure that FSN will be more than happy to pick up whatever leftovers they can find. Fox's significant share of the ownership of the BTN could come into play.

Heck, I'd be willing to bet that there are several channels in the Twin Cities that would be glad to pick up a few games.

It's not like Madison, where I have my doubts that we'll see more than 6 non-BTN games on TV.

I think that the B1G Network is a big plus (and negative *), but what about the Fighting Sioux Sports Network for UND? What about Lakeland PTV and the Minnesota Channel for BSU? What about Charter Main Street for MSU and SCSU? How about NESN/Comcast New England for Hockey East? What about the deal the ECAC had with CBS College Sports? Are those going to go away just because of the BTHC?

Interesting suff here. I do know when Minnesota leaves the WCHA they will not have the MPLS/St.Paul market anymore. IMO, losing the MPLS/St.Paul market severely hurts the WCHA. Only if the WCHA decides to have a game of the week will they then have the MPLS/St. Paul market. Every school in the WCHA should be concerned. It is not good.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to balance a trophy with the UP added onto the mitten?

I've seen this, "well, I'm sure that FSN will pick up all the Gopher games" comment from several places, and while it may end up being true, there are enough indicators (tape delayed games, etc.) that not every game may be on TV, IMHO. I suppose we won't really know until the full TV schedule for the '12-'13 season is released - and that won't likely happen until September or so of 2012.

I guess it's TBD what will happen to the TV deals I mentioned before. I know that Lakeland PTV signed a 2 year deal to do BSU hockey, but I've got no idea if the Minnesota Channel deal was 2 years. Also, what happens after '11-'12 with the BSU broadcasts? Does Lakeland (and state-wide TV) decide that with no Minnnesota or Wisconsin that it isn't worth doing? Same with the Charter SCSU/MSU deal. Those games are on Charter Main Street across the state and on Midco in some areas as well. That gets some MPLS/St.Paul market penetration, but with no local team, it will be interesting to see how much interest there is. I'd assume that the Fighting Sioux Sports Network will continue broadcasts throughout North Dakota and northwestern MN.

There continues to be discussion about a "WCHA TV Network," but I have to admit, I'm not sure how well something that would work taking away the largest market in the conference. Truth be told, I'd be happy with some sort of internet version where you could go to WCHA.com and pay for one school and get access to every away game for one season subscription (like the b2network used to do before everyone went off on their own with video streaming).

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

They already do that. The only difference is that Penn State is there now and will take up 27 or 28 more spots. Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State and Ohio State won't get any more players than they do now. Penn State also has only 18 scholarships available. Just like the rest. Where some of the smaller schools get players is that they can offer a scholarship or a partial when the big boys have their scholies all used up. So the player then has a decision. Does he walk on at Penn State or take a half scholarship at Ferris State? Does he take a half at Ohio State or a full at NMU. If the addition of the additional 18 scholarships at Penn State causes the rest of the CCHA and WCHA, who would be affected by an average of one player each, to collapse, I will be quite surprised.

Is this after UAH drops its hockey program?

Lower Michigan is the Dirty Uncle we don't like to talk about!

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

Its not hard, add mass to the base of the trophy, and it won't tip over.

But then we'd hear complaints about how the LP part of the trophy is much more impressively massive than the UP part.

Re: CCHA and WCHA should combine when BIg Ten forms???

hosting a frozen 4 doesnt mean anything. One of the Alaska schools hosted in 99 in anaheim (over 1,000 miles away from campus) and Navy, who doesnt have a program, hosted in Washington DC a couple of years ago. As far as not giving up on things, is that something you really want to say about the state of Alabama?? (think segregation/George Wallace)

You're right about the Frozen Four. Hosting it will not help UAH get a conference home. They will continue to keep the program alive as an independent (for a year or two) 'til they are told that no conference will accept them.

Well, that wasn't exactly Alabama's shining moment there, but other than that, it's usually a good quality to stick with something even when things are not easy and going your way.
