Re: Canadian Olympic Team drinking champaign
yep, silly - not stupid.
Team management and leadership made a bad decision.
Celebrations are in locker rooms and away from the press (especially photographers) for a reason. I'm talking about the 'relax and enjoy the win' celebration, not the PR one that gets photographed.
Wouldn't it be nicer if all you had to talk about was the masterful play of the Canadian women? THAT should be the focus now - for the good of the sport and all involved.
Those images will color the minds of those who don't 'get it' but yet control many of the resources devoted or potentially devoted to the sport.
All downside - no upside - just dumb.
Actually that's where you are the one who has got it all wrong. Clearly you don't understand the world of marketing. This move was actually and truly GENIUS as it turns out!!
Haven't you ever heard the PR maxim "there is no such thing as bad publicity"?
Any kind of publicity provides a sport with profile and awareness. This is a sport that has suffered for far too long without sufficient attention, on the fringes of the media when it is covered at all. This has been an even bigger problem than the lack of competition.
Typically, when the National Women's team wins something, it gets a little column and maybe a small innocuous picture the next day. And then is completely forgotten until the next international event.
Here's how it was covered in the Toronto Star, the largest paper.
(Of course, I can't comment on how the story may have been covered differently outside of the centre of the universe in Toronto)
This time, the women's team gets the lead story--in the middle of all sorts of Olympic medal success no less! There were 2 pages in the Toronto Star, with a less traditional and more eye-catching visual than the traditional team photo--and with nary a mention except in passing of the international kerfuffle. So the focus of the original story was on the game itself. Checkmark.
BUt wait, this time they were not forgotten the next day! A day later IT IS STILL GETTING ATTENTION despite many new Canadian medals!!! It is a miracle! Full page coverage in the front section for the second day in a row! Unheard of previously. And with the headline "Tempest in a Beer Can", essentially making fun of the international media's reaction.
Further, in the feature,
even the COC president is quoted as saying the girls have absolutely nothing to apologize for. Corroborating quotes are included from other members of the public too.
It is all a PR flak's miracle come true! And they didn't have to pay for an expensive advertising and promotional campaign to promote women's hockey, or pay gi-normous PR fees either! Talk about getting great mileage out of a case of cheap beer!
Yes, there was an interesting lesson to be learned from all of this...but it actually isn't the one you think it is.
Hopefully the powers that be are not dumb enough not to get it.
