Canadian Olympic Team drinking champaign

Re: Canadian Olympic Team drinking champaign

Sillywench:(

yep, silly - not stupid.

Team management and leadership made a bad decision.

Celebrations are in locker rooms and away from the press (especially photographers) for a reason. I'm talking about the 'relax and enjoy the win' celebration, not the PR one that gets photographed.

Wouldn't it be nicer if all you had to talk about was the masterful play of the Canadian women? THAT should be the focus now - for the good of the sport and all involved.

Those images will color the minds of those who don't 'get it' but yet control many of the resources devoted or potentially devoted to the sport.

All downside - no upside - just dumb.

You mean like Molson's?

Re: Canadian Olympic Team drinking champaign

It this were men doing this, they would be applauded

I wouldn’t blame this story too much on a double standard. The only reason anyone is able to make a big deal of this is because they still have their jerseys on. Olympic athletes are more like collegiate athletes than nhl players in the sense that they represent their country like students do their school and both are held to similar standards. Bode Miller had the media all over him too when he celebrated winning the world cup by drinking champagne after the race.

But if I was them I’d full willingly get criticized by the media and take pictures like that, they’re funny. I wish Johnson actually stole the zamboni and someone was able to get a picture of it. It’d hands down be the sickest picture she’d ever take in her entire life.

And to think that Bettman is considering not including the NHL'ers in SOCHI. That would be a crying shame.

Bettman is the biggest ***** in sports. I wish he'd never left basketball. Napoleon complex at its worst. But I wouldn't worry. Its just one of his latest little power games because he's all miffed at the Russians. He's just bargaining.

Re: Canadian Olympic Team drinking champaign

Russia will probably be looking for a bunch of college kids for the next olympics; after the performance of their NHL and KHL players.

Actually that's where you are the one who has got it all wrong. Clearly you don't understand the world of marketing. This move was actually and truly GENIUS as it turns out!!

Haven't you ever heard the PR maxim "there is no such thing as bad publicity"?

Any kind of publicity provides a sport with profile and awareness. This is a sport that has suffered for far too long without sufficient attention, on the fringes of the media when it is covered at all. This has been an even bigger problem than the lack of competition.

Typically, when the National Women's team wins something, it gets a little column and maybe a small innocuous picture the next day. And then is completely forgotten until the next international event.

Here's how it was covered in the Toronto Star, the largest paper. (Of course, I can't comment on how the story may have been covered differently outside of the centre of the universe in Toronto);)

This time, the women's team gets the lead story--in the middle of all sorts of Olympic medal success no less! There were 2 pages in the Toronto Star, with a less traditional and more eye-catching visual than the traditional team photo--and with nary a mention except in passing of the international kerfuffle. So the focus of the original story was on the game itself. Checkmark.

BUt wait, this time they were not forgotten the next day! A day later IT IS STILL GETTING ATTENTION despite many new Canadian medals!!! It is a miracle! Full page coverage in the front section for the second day in a row! Unheard of previously. And with the headline "Tempest in a Beer Can", essentially making fun of the international media's reaction.

Further, in the feature, even the COC president is quoted as saying the girls have absolutely nothing to apologize for. Corroborating quotes are included from other members of the public too.

It is all a PR flak's miracle come true! And they didn't have to pay for an expensive advertising and promotional campaign to promote women's hockey, or pay gi-normous PR fees either! Talk about getting great mileage out of a case of cheap beer!

Yes, there was an interesting lesson to be learned from all of this...but it actually isn't the one you think it is.

Hopefully the powers that be are not dumb enough not to get it.

Yeah I agree, haven't you seen the documentary about golf... I think it's called Happy Gilmore.

But people are quick to blow athletes actions way out of proportion because they’re seen as being role modals in the public eye.

But there’s no positive connotation behind that label. Athletes are role modals because what they do is watched so publicly. They didn’t decide to put all that time and effort into training just so that they can set a positive example for kids. It just happens to be that athletes for the most part do tend to be very positive role modals, but they shouldn’t be seen as being morally obliged to act a certain way more than anyone else. The only people who have the right to scrutinize their decisions are those who’ve been in the same situation but chose to act differently.

A 18 or 20 something year old in particular should be allowed to be only thinking about them selves especially when they've just won a gold medal at the Olympics. It's not like these were scandalous pictures being taken.

Well, then - it certainly fits in there.

I'm sure the AP photographer appreciated the opportunity presented.

Enjoy your press.

Re: Canadian Olympic Team drinking champaign

I agree. Not sure an apology was warranted but given the fact that IOC came out with there ill timed release about the future of women's hockey on the same day as the Gold Medal game:rolleyes: ...the Canadians were probably forced to say something...no matter how hollow the apology was. Your right though...most hockey fans can see right through it...true hockey fans weren't offended.

I can see the next colector's t-shirt.

A Coors Light on the front. Text "No Offense"

Big Canadian bottle on the back - Text "No Apology Necessary"

Order me a meduim:cool:

EDIT: The above was posted by DC. I would never drink either of those products, or endorse them with a t-shirt.

Actually it's Bettman and the Owners. They will send their players to Sochi but are adamant that they want to partake in the profit's from it.

Capatilism at it's finest...

Actually I wish them luck, with one caveat...a % of the profits should be set aside to improve the game in participating countries world wide in an effort to create parity for future games.

Seems simple enough?

Beer OK for Obama

Beer OK for Obama

It's OK for MEN to have a case of Beer on the game...:D

P.S.....They mentioned on CBC last night the the Canadian Mens hockey team did not attend the closing ceremonies, as most were celebrating in private with their families. Off course, they all have to report to their clubs today. Detroit and Colorado play tonight already. They showed many of the women players who were all in the audience.

My Bride and I have raised enough kids in our time together. If one of them did something like this we'd be pretty happy that's all they did and still be very proud of their accomplishment. It could be alot worse. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Re: Canadian Olympic Team drinking champaign

Could you please explain your post? I think either you drank some of that beer and are saying that you think I've never won anything important related to sports. (yes that is true). And that you apologize if I'm 12. (im almost 40 years older than 12)
With that said, I wasn't forming an opinion either way. Im happy for them, they won fair and square. I was just posting morning news, just like other people post photos and articles on a day to day basis.

Your right I was drinking, actually I haven't stopped drinking for the last few days now, the party is still going strong! DOUBLE GOLD BABY!!!!
My point was when you win a event of that magnitude, especially in your home rink or in this case your home country it's your god given right to drink and smoke cigars where ever you want.
Unfortunately in this case the media made a mountain out of a mole hill.
We agree on that, right.....

Wow, almost 52 years old! That's not old, FOR A TREE!
Kidding, you are two years older than myself.
Except for an occasional heart attack, I feel as young as I ever did.

In massachusetts there is no smoking in public buildings, period! So no cigars!
