Canada IS hockey

Re: Canada IS hockey

With the staggering growth rates shown in this NYT article for Hockey Weekend across America it won't be too long before... America IS hockey.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/18/sports/hockey/18hockey.html

With more than 300 million "legal" residents, hockey numbers should be better represented. Living in the southern California, hockey is a non-sport. Very little covereage, other than the odd weekly game from Anaheim or LA. Other media coverage is non-existent here. Also, if it grows, it will be DESPITE the NHL, not because of it. Proof: The NBC Game of the Week last week between Boston and Detroit was aired SUNDAY MORNING AT 9:30 PST...wonder what those viewer numbers looked like?? (this is when NBC shows ALL their Games of the Week here) I'll believe it when I see it.

Word of warning though, if America does decide to truly embrace the game, as Canada has....look out!!

The 3 things that caught my attention were, in order;

20% of the NHL lineups are now American born players from 25 different states.

Hockey is the second fastest growing sport in America since 2008.

The inexplicable decline in hockey registrations in Michigan, Massachusetts and New York.

Dont know about Mass, but the economies of both Michigan and NY have been in the toilet for some time now. That may be part of it.

And the first is ?

Re: Canada IS hockey

I won't slam any country on this thread. I AM Canadian and have many many many American friends as my family has brought our Canadian talent to play our beloved game at a US College.
I respect the talent pool that is continually growing within the US but I agree "Canada IS Hockey"
It's something in the heart and soul of a majority of Canadians, a LOVE of "the GAME" that other nations atm do not possess.
It is possible that a championship may be won by others but there is a silent realization and ever knowing smile deep inside every Canadian that says "it will likely not happen next time"

Ame O Jogo!!!
C eh N eh D eh

Re: Canada IS hockey

Nice job Canadians!!

Vancouver [like the rest of the place] is just soooooooo "classy". Honestly, what a bunch of losers.

Re: Canada IS hockey

Classless indeed, but in all fairness we've had our share of sports-related hooliganism here in the U.S. too.

Re: Canada IS hockey

yea, this kind of thing never happens in the USA….How many times have rapid fans gotten out of control over a championship win in the NBA, NFL,or NBL, or college…Just about every year, some city in the USA is ravaged by crazed fans….But I like to believe that these crazy fans don't represent me as an American, no more than the crazy Canuck fans represent all of hockey in Canada

Sorry you were so offended. It was meant tongue in cheek. I assume you mean "rabid" fans...and it happens often enough in the US. On the Minnesota campus, they riot in similar fashion when they win titles. In reality, it is poor behavior by sports fans regardless of their nationality.

no offense taken and yes I did mean rabid...:)

I know I personally feel better about the behavior of rabid sports fans of North America than say, the European futbol (soccer) fans. Those crazy hooligans don't even wait for the match to end with full scale tear the stadium apart brawls involving thousands. Sometimes all over a simple bad call by an official.

Re: Canada IS hockey

I'm sure that Harry Sinden, Peter Chiarelli, Cam Neely, Claude Julien, Doug Houda, Geoff Ward, Bob Essensa and the other 17 Canadian's that made up this years Stanley Cup winning team are as embarrassed as the rest of us.

//USA! USA! USA!...hey wait a minute... ;)

Yes...which makes all the Canadian flag waving all the more stupid [esp. since a significant % of the team is NOT Canadian..including their 2 best players]...

I really don't understand all the stupid Canadian flag waving [even in places like Toronto]...Did you ever see a Tampa fan wave the US flag when they won the Cup?? Doubtful. Winning a Cup is about your city, and your team...NOT your country. [well, that holds true in most places but not in Can-a duh I guess].
