Interesting move by de Blasio. I guess he sees the writing on the wall.

As Bernie Sanders prepared to deliver a speech on Wall Street reform, New York City’s progressive mayor, Bill de Blasio, endorsed Hillary Clinton’s financial proposals instead.

Re: Campaign 2016 - Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.

Whoa. This is strange.

In a shocking development Tuesday evening, Democratic Rep. Steve Israel announced that he would not seek re-election this fall, saying he wants to "spend more time writing my second novel." Israel was first elected in 2000 to fill the seat left open by Republican Rep. Rick Lazio, who lost the race to replace Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan to none other than Hillary Clinton. In Congress, Israel was a hawk on national security matters and voted for the Iraq war; he also joined the Blue Dog Coalition and voted for George W. Bush's tax cuts.

But over time he moved to the left and eventually quit the Blue Dogs before rising to become chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee ahead of the 2012 cycle. With Democrats deep in the minority after the 2010 GOP wave, Israel faced a difficult task and fell short of recapturing the House, but he did guide his party to eight pickups. His second turn at helming the DCCC in 2014 went poorly, though, as Democrats gave back all their gains from the previous cycle and then some, losing 13 seats and leaving the party with its smallest minority since the 1920s.

Israel, a close ally of Nancy Pelosi, never had too much trouble holding down his own seat, but his retirement completely scrambles the picture. New York's 3rd Congressional District, located on Long Island, is no liberal bastion: Barack Obama won it by just a 51-48 margin, and with the seat now open, Republicans have a real chance at capturing it.

I grew up in the heart of what is now the 3rd. It's educated, so advantage Democrats. But it's got portions that are rich, so that knocks it back to a toss-up. Hillary should help, and if the GOP puts pretty much anybody up there except Bush that should blow it for them. All assuming there's no big difference in quality of the seat candidates, of course.

The tragedy of clown-on-clown violence.

“Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: ‘Do we want a candidate (Cruz) who could be tied up in court for two years?’ That’d be a big problem,” Trump said when asked about the topic. “It’d be a very precarious one for Republicans because he’d be running and the courts may take a long time to make a decision. You don’t want to be running and have that kind of thing over your head.”

Trump added, “I’d hate to see something like that get in his way. But a lot of people are talking about it and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport.”

What goes around comes around! Kinda hard to argue that Obama's not a citizen because his father's from Kenya, then turn around and say no problem when Cruz's father isn't an American and Cruz himself wasn't born on US soil! Lets just say I'm going to have a little fun with this at the expense of my conservative friends if he's the nomine....;)

I wonder how far Trump will actually push it, and I wonder if his minions will actually adopt it.

Why did Trump even do the whole Birther thing with Obama? He wasn't running, so what was his angle? Has he been sucking up to the right for that long?

This is discounting the possibility that he believes it, as my model of Trump is that he literally believes nothing. He's the personification of the Chinese Room -- signals get passed through his sense organs and are translated inside his processor and then passed out his mouth but this is just signal processing -- there is no "understanding" or "belief" associated with what is a very rudimentary attempt at AI.

Cruz responded on Twitter by posting a link to the Fonzie Jumping the Shark video from Happy Days.

Wondering if he was doing a test run of his ability to dominate the political conversation in the media. Throw out a nonsense story and see if you can get people to dance to your tune. He was surprisingly successful in that regard.

That implies a sophisticated algorithm with feedback and learning. I don't think the Trump product line is capable of that. Its circuits are only simple gate arrays hooked together with hairspray and dog feces.

Meh, the guy is just playing a character IMHO. He's a bit more clever than he's getting credit for. Hard for a born on 3rd base billionaire with multiple ex-wives to appeal to both the working class and the evangelicals yet he's pulling it off.

Colbert said "Trump is my old character with $10 billion."

What's the point of the character, though? Is he just masturbating his ego? Is there some sort of windfall at the end of this?

I think he was bored. He's made his money and he's been doing that TV show for awhile. What's left? Senate or even governor is too low ball for him. Why not run for President. IMHO he's a lot further along then he ever expected, but why not run with it? I'm sure he's not concerned about what would happen if he actually won. There's a lot of billionaires out there, but if he gets the nomination, he's one upped Gates, Buffett, the Kochs, etc.
