Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

That makes the rounds every time a new man gets elected to office.

/SourGrapes.

This. Former high school acquaintance of mine posted that to Facebook last night. I told him that's the exact attitude that the Trumpstains have had for 8 years.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

Sadly, this was my district. I'm not surprised. It's an R-leaning area to begin with, there wasn't much effort to turn out the vote Dem vote since Minnesota was likely Hillary's anyway, and there was just nothing down ballot to get people interested. Our House Rep race was a joke. The constitutional amendment was a snooze, and the only other referendum was on funding a senior center. West was able to send out a bunch of mailers because he got that money from those companies thinking he was a generic Republican, when really, with his racist vitriol, he was like 15% worse.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

There were some poli sci profs that called the race correctly. One was interviewed on NPR last week as an amusing sideshow, he explained that his model uses 6 pass/fail inputs concerning current party's time in office, GDP growth, unemployment, etc. and was predicting a republican win. Then he and the interviewer kind of laughed it off and began discussing how his infallible model would have to be changed for next time since it would obviously fail.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

I didn't, couldn't, vote for Trump for several reasons, one being the bucket of issues that can be categorized as "social garbage." I think I fall on the liberal side of center on social topic, and it really ****es me off when we as a country wasting time rehashing abortion, or fighting over who can marry who. That crap has driven me away, despite me being more of a fiscal conservative. I didn't like either major candidate, and didn't vote for either.

At the same time, I can see the motivation that drove people to Trump, even if I didn't agree with it. I underestimated how many of these people there were, but so did many people. It is a mistake to simply call all Trump voters racist, or sexist, or stupid, because they're not. Just like it would be idiotic to make similar wide sweeping comments about Hillary voters, those wouldn't be accurate either.

I hope this presidency isn't marred by endless social BS, but I don't have much faith that this hope will be answered.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

I must not be too hip to social media then... can't say I've ever seen it before.

#therewasnohashtagthingwheniwasincollege

It wasn't around when I was in college either, but it's still a common theme that was spread by other means since I can remember voting. I heard it with GWB (Clinton was first elected when I was just 13), I heard it with Obama, and now we're getting it with Trump.

Well said.

I know my dad isn't racist, might be a little sexist and he's certainly not stupid - chemical engineer (UW).

Just sees the world differently than me.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

Or I should say, prioritizes issues differently than I do which leads him to a different candidate.

Some of them are, some of them aren't. At the end of the day, the question for most of the Trump "leaners" who ultimately broke for him was "What is my gut feeling?"

Again, a lot of stupid Americans vote based on their emotions.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

Well, he IS my president so I'm not going to pretend like he doesn't exist. And like the Thanks Obama thing that started, I hope my friends are ready for a Thanks Trump, and gee, are you happy now that Roe v Wade has been overturned? You should be so proud!! It will be constant.

Really? He campaigned on "women who get abortions should be punished" and nominating justices who would reverse Roe v Wade.

Of course he will get mixed up in it.

He campaigned on a million different things. He also has complimented planned parenthood in the past. His agenda is going to be economy, border security, and infrastructure; would be surprised to see him get sidetracked by something like abortion.

Not all are, but it is a pretty safe assumption that most of the racist / sexist voters did vote for Trump.

He's done a lot of things in the past that he chooses to not remember anymore. And he has a religious extremist as his VP who is going to push for it totally and Trump will say "OK fine, that's your area. Where do you need me to sign? I have a state dinner to go to."

Whether you like it or not, race was one of the central issues of this campaign and there's going to have to be a conversation on race. Trump made a lot of racist, homophobic, and misogynist statements and people voted for him. Trump's core message was "taking back their America."

Race, gender, sexual orientation? All of those will have to be addressed.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

None of them have been or are MY President. I don't claim ownership.

They are THE president though.

Salute the rank, not the man.
